Greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School.

A particular welcome this week to Oscar in Room 13, Singtoh and Blake Room 8a, Dulina Room 8 and Siya Room 9, and their families.  We look forward to you joining our wonderful school community.
We farewell Chantelle and Chevonne who are off to Greymouth. We wish you and your family all the best on the Coast.

A big thank you to all who supported the recent Mask Parade - The kids were amazing despite the sound glitches!  If you have any great photos we would love to see them!

Last Monday was Teacher Appreciation day and the School Community Group, on your behalf, treated our staff to a lovely morning tea and gifted each person with a herb plant. This was a lovely way to support the hauora, or wellbeing, of each of our valued staff members. A big thank you to Andrea and her committee members who baked, schemed, wrote affirming messages and organised the lovely morning tea celebration and student speeches.  Thanks to all of you that sent cards flowers etc...The staff felt very appreciated and appreciative. Thank you all.

We have been advised that a teacher strike has been called for NEXT Thursday 15 November.  Please read the letter from our Board Chairperson below.

Congratulations to our Gymnasts who have and will continue to compete in the Nelson Gymnastics competition this week. Congratulations to our three aquabot teams who were the only primary teams in the NZ National competition and took out a first, second and third place - and congratulations to those who were part of the Christchurch Kapahaka competition - Whakatu did extremely well there too!
I have heard that Room 3 are having a real blast at camp in Mistletoe Bay. They are well supported by an amazing team of teachers and parent helpers, and we look forward to the stories on their return!

We wish campers next week from Rooms 7, 8, 15 and 16, 17. all the very best in their camping adventures.
All the best, also, to any siblings starting NCEA exams this week.
Have a great end to your week.

Dear Parents and Caregivers

The Board of Trustees can’t provide teaching for students during the upcoming strike.

The NZEI has advised the Nelson Central School  Board of Trustees that the principal and teachers at our school will be taking strike action on  Thursday 15 November 2018 from 8am to 5pm.

The Board has carefully considered the availability of teaching staff, and unfortunately decided that we can’t provide the normal teaching services

during the strike so the school will officially be closed for instruction during the above times.

It’s important that you make alternative arrangements for the care of your child/children during the period of the strike as no supervision can be provided.

Yikes is available to supervise children during this day and drop off and pick up’s will be onsite at the school. Please see notice about Yikes below.

If this is difficult we can still supervise a small number of students if required.

Please contact Whaea Pip directly  - pip@nelsoncentral.school.nz if your child/children will need this.

School transport will also be affected by the strike.

I know that this is inconvenient for parents and students alike, but please be assured that student safety is our main concern.

Thank you for your understanding.

Please contact me if you have any queries relating to this decision.

Yours sincerely

Dr Bradley Hannigan

Chair  - Nelson Central School Board of Trustees

Please note:

Anyone visiting the school must sign in
and out at the school office visitors book, this is required even if you are dropping off something to your child.

Thank you

Found - A bike helmet has been handed into the school office, if your child has recently lost/misplaced one please call into the school office.

Traffic Safety

Keeping tamariki safe is of paramount importance to us, and we have become increasingly aware of "close calls" around pick up and drop off time.

Please follow these guidelines to ensure safety:

Do not park in areas that obstruct the flow of traffic. This can force other vehicles to reverse near where children are waiting or crossing roads.

Do teach your children to stay on the footpath until they are adjacent to your vehicle. Too often we see children walking along the road to get to their parent's car.

Do ensure that your children know to wait under the big tree if being picked up on Alton Street.

Do encourage your children to walk, scooter or cycle if they can do so safely. It can ease stress around the school gates if you park a few blocks away and walk the last 10 minutes, it is a great way to enjoy the summer sun, get some exercise and have a kōrero about your child's day.

We are encouraging ACTIVE TRANSPORT at Nelson Central School. Walk or bring your wheels, even if just for part of your journey. Help your tamariki to develop essential road safety skills and celebrate a healthy start to the day with members of our school whanau.

Organised and delivered by the Totara Syndicate Wheels Team.

Positive Play

We are currently reviewing structures and activities during playtimes and lunchtimes to ensure children are always safe and engaged in positive play.

We want children to be able to recharge their batteries, enjoy social time with their peers, take reasonable risks to stretch themselves and have fun.

We know the vast majority of all children play happily and confidently with their peers. Teachers spend significant time scaffolding skills to support this to happen. For some students we provide additional scaffolds and support at break times.

Selected senior students are trained as Peer Mediators and can be seen on duty in the playground to help younger children or pair up those without a playing buddy. Teachers are on duty supporting children when they need help or support in the playground.

We have surveyed children to see what activities they might enjoy during break times and have introduced a number of new initiatives, including the purchase and use of new playground equipment,  engaging an adult to introduce games in the junior playing area and sensory garden and providing external sports providers to offer coaching sessions. You may note a range of other activities advertised such as “Wheels Wednesday,” making wax wraps, gardening, and Summit Club. We now open the library most lunchtimes, with a range of  clubs (most recently lego, chess, drawing and movie making) for those who prefer a quiet space to relax in.

We are always on the look-out for other ideas to support our tamariki to have fun and build Key Competencies in their break times in safe ways. We are currently exploring options around how eating is timed and structured.

We will keep you posted with further initiatives.

Kowhai News

Last week and this week our Kowhai classes are taking part in the Te Rito workshop at the Nelson Museum.  Lara taught us how to work with harakeke, flax, to make a whariki, mat, and some whetu, stars. Watch out for our taonga, treasures, on display in Renwick House. A big thank you to all the parents who have been involved in these visits. Without you our tamariki would not have had this opportunity. Kia ora.

They placed 1st overall and brought back many trophies for their efforts!!  Ka rawe koutou!!

Enviro Group
Nelson Central Enviro Agents participated in the Great New Zealand Kereru count and this meant we were able to enter a mural design competition. The children all put their ideas around what is 'Nature in Nelson' together and one of the teachers came up with a design. We were one of 11 entries and were successful in our design winning the main prize. The children have all been allocated a part of the mural and are busily working on finalizing their drawings. With the support of the Nelson City Council, EnviroSchools Nelson and some dedicated parents this will begin construction next week.  Keep an eye out for our busy artists!
