Yahoo's Thamel, Forde & Wetzel interrupted the start of the hoops season with news that the feds have given the NCAA the green light to start its own investigations tied to MBB-FBI developments. Doesn't look like there's any official paperwork on the go-ahead, more of "an acknowledgement" that some schools can get to work. No word on exactly which schools are the focus yet, but the trio mentions the expectation by campus staffers of this step coming down the pike. Of note from Thamel, Forde & Wetzel, "Among college athletics leadership, there’s a growing impatience at the NCAA’s lack of action, as the scandal could hover over the sport for additional years as the process plays out. NCAA investigations are generally slow and tedious, and the potential of double-digit schools being investigated certainly won’t expedite the process." (link); Sports Illustrated legal expert McCann: "One concern the feds have had with the NCAA conducting simultaneous investigations is the risk of losing informants. However, with the Justice Department winning the Jim Gatto trial & with potential plea deals in the Chuck Person & Book Richardson cases, that concern is reduced." (link)
Here's the full transcript of Oregon AD & College Football Playoff committee chair Mullens addressing the media after unveiling updated rankings of Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame & Michigan. Mullens avoids a direct response about UCF's schedule as the Knights stayed put at 12, pointed to a key road win at Texas for West Virginia's jump from 13 to 9. Mullens reiterates there's zero discussion in the room about individual conferences, also quips, "I don't even know what the AP Poll is, so we don't do a comparison. We don't look at other polls. Again, we just look at resumes." Another one: "We don't project. We are laser focused on only do our work through the results to date. We don't try to project. We don't look ahead. Our charge is to look at the results through week 10 in a very detailed manner, and that's what we do." (link)
Loyola Chicago MBB raised its 2018 Final Four banner as it tipped with UMKC. Ramblers AD Watson outlines how he & his team have strategized to extend the moment of the F4 run that clearly played a big role in attracting the largest freshmen class in school history. Watson points to turning the groundswell into more cash for his department so MBB doesn't have to make bus trips to the likes of Southern Illinois six hours south in Carbondale. Watson: "We won't do that anymore. We're going to find a way." (link)
Last night featured around 150 MBB tips & another 100 for the Women, but both Notre Dame WBB HC McGraw & UConn peer Auriemma aren't fans of the new early start date. McGraw says the season was already too long, also indicates the WBCA board voted against the measure, but "the NCAA passed it anyway." NCAA VP of MBB Gavitt goes though his rationale again, notes the influence of FB on Saturdays & Sundays in the Fall, "Starting on Tuesday, we can hopefully get a few days before you get to the weekend where people talk about the season." (link)
I didn't realize some MTEs, even the headlining Maui Invitational, had trouble filling their non-premium spots back in the summer for mainland games, leading the likes of Arizona & Wisconsin to file a waiver with the NCAA to handle scheduling the fourth tips themselves. Upon approval, that's how Arizona ended up doling out $100K to Houston Baptist for tonight's opener in Tucson. U of A MBB Director of Operations Reynolds notes the glut of MTEs causing a bit of a supply-demand issue, also, "We usually pay between 85 and 95 (thousand) but at that time of year, it was like, 'Let’s just get it done.' It just kind of helped get it done." $100K matches the most Zona has ever paid for a game. (link)
As of 1:45a PST, San Diego State's "SDSU West" campus & FB facility plan was winning a majority of the support by citizens (54.86%). Alternatively, the competing "SoccerCity" measure is resoundingly getting defeated at 70.13% rejecting the measure. (link)
South Dakota leaders, including Coyotes AD Herbster, comment on the NCAA's new Transfer Portal, "What this does is while an athlete may be researching schools, it allows coaches to see that they are looking to transfer. It eliminates the shady side of transferring where people may reach out to athletes before they are allowed." USD Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Oyen: "I don’t feel like it will increase the number of transfers, it is just a different way or requesting information to look elsewhere." (link)
Winthrop is thinking seriously about adding an esports program as Eagles AD Halpin proposed the idea of the university's Board of Trustees. WU Prez Mahony has identified the importance of adding unique academic & athletic offerings to help the institution stand out. Halpin already has a donor committed to help getting the program off the ground, notes how many involved with the "sport" are entering the "money demo" for future giving purposes & how it can serve as a notable recruiting angle for attracting students. Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
When do you spend a moment each day without any stimuli or inputs tickling your brain? Seriously, think about it. Notable author & NPR host Sagal encourages professionals to, at minimum, workout/run without music in their ears as it may be the only opportunity all day to "spend time inside your own head." Sagal's suggested form of mindlessness, "Spending that much time inside one’s head, along with the voices and the bats hanging from the various dendrites and neurons, is one of the best things about running, or at least one of the most therapeutic. Your brain is like a duvet cover: Every once in a while, it needs to be aired out." More. (link)

Auburn FB HC Malzahn isn't going anywhere, according to Tigers AD Greene, "He’ll be the coach next year, and I’m confident that he’s going to — he’s already proven that we can get through adversity. Every team has it, and I’m looking forward to working with him for a long time." More: "After seeing some games, I know that we’re young at some positions and I think there’s a lot of talent at those positions. I know Coach is working really hard to recruit, and the staff to recruit additional talent, which I think he’ll hit home runs in that regard. He’s going to continue to be a really good coach here for us, and I’m really excited to work with him, to help provide Auburn fans the type of football program that they deserve." Malzahn is making a base of $6.705M, has a buyout of $32M as of December 1. (link)
Georgia AD McGarity understands why Bulldogs FB HC Smart & rival Florida peer Mullen would love to see their annual matchup be played on campus at some point in the future, but the financial arrangement in Jacksonville is too attractive to disrupt. McGarity points to losing out on $2.6M over two years if the series location was changed, adds, "And really, it’s become so much more than a football game in Jacksonville. It’s become a week of celebration for South Georgia and North Florida. There are only two traditional games left of that nature (with the other Texas-Oklahoma). That’s where we are at this time." McGarity also notes the potential for structure changes for future FB slates as Auburn's Greene has mentioned wanting some breathing room in the future between kicks with UGA & Alabama. (link)
Gonzaga MBB HC Few says people shouldn't hold their breath on him ever leaving Spokane, though he does admit there have been a few offers that created some pause, "For me, they cause you to look deeper into yourself than I'm comfortable doing on a regular basis. [...] The great thing about Gonzaga is they've continued to grow the entire time we've been on this run, so I'm not staying at the same job. It feels different. Now we have our new practice facility. [...] It's been a fabulous place to call home." Further, Few doesn't think going to the National Championship game back in 2017 has changed him or the program much, "It's on to the next thing." (link)
South Carolina FB HC Muschamp gets widely criticized on social media after indicating he didn't realize yesterday was election day. Muschamp was asked what he said to his student-athletes about voting, didn't initially respond, was asked again, "You know there's an election today?" Muschamp: "I do now. I'm getting ready for Florida." (link)
More Personnel: BYU MBB HC Rose signs a one-year extension, taking him through the 2020-21 season. (link); Rutgers will make a change in Men's Soccer as it parts ways with HC Donigan. (link); Howard hires former Maryland AC Tyson as the next Softball HC for the Bison. (link); Longtime MBB insider Katz will be part of Fox Sports' studio college hoops coverage this year. Both will report to Consumer and Marketplace Prez Hill. (link)
AdAge's Crupi digs into PwC's annual sports industry financial projections & notes the massive up tick sports gambling could have for teams & leagues. Per a Nielsen study, TV advertising alone from betting operators & casinos could generate $451M annually. There's also an expected increase in TV ratings as more states adopt the measure around the nation. However, NFL Chief Media & Business Officer Rolapp does not think sports gambling's stickiness will automatically lead a big digital player to enter the rights space, plus he's not even sure it would be the right move for his league, "We can reach 25 million people [on broadcast TV], and I have not seen a live event on the internet that can serve 25 million concurrent users at a high quality. It's one of these things that will need to be resolved, because money is not the issue for these guys." More. (link); Check out how gambling site 888.com is activating at New York Jets games. Butler boss Collier talks about latest round of upgrades ($10.5M) to the venerable Hinkle Fieldhouse, points to the importance of maintaining the "Hinkle feel that just breathes basketball," while carefully providing a better experience for fans. So far the Bulldogs have raised $8M. Excited to no longer rely on "1928 air conditioning of opening a window." On the MBB front, Collier says the program is used to being picked low in the Big East preseason poll, uses it as a chip & the coming renovations should further help to sustain momentum for the program. (link)
Like Hinkle, another venue that's received consistent love since its initial opening in 2002 is Old Dominion's Ted Constant Convocation Center. Former Virginian-Pilot scribe & current ODU staffer Minium lauds the university & Spectra for their contributions to keep the venue looking new & feeling fresh. The Ted has a new lighting system this year, along with a new playing floor. Minium calls the arena the best in the Commonwealth of Virginia & notes that James Madison's new digs may end up being better, but forethought on amenity & fan experience upgrades in Norfolk have kept The Ted at for forefront. (link)
Collegiate Consulting has launched a "gaming consulting" vertical with the legalization of sports gambling creating heartburn for ADs, especially those in states where measures have already been passed. Seton Hall is on board as the first client as New Jersey is taking bets. Former UNLV/Arizona/Washington State AD Livengood involved to present to Pirate student-athletes & staff. From the release, "The program provided best practices, recommended gaming protocols and procedures, FAQ and question & answer session with Mr. Livengood." (link)
Pretty optimal timing for this announcement given Duke MBB's resounding win over Kentucky last night. The Blue Devils will work with INFLCR to amplify their message on social media. "After activation in October, Duke basketball players gained access to thousands of content-items produced by the university and accessed via the INFLCR mobile app. Duke players downloaded or shared more than 270 items in the first two weeks, reaching an additional Instagram audience of more than 2.7 million unique viewers for that content." (link)
Add Cal FB to the list of programs that now have nap pods for student-athletes to take advantage of during down moments. Eight pods & five lounge chairs were part of the gift from alum Kennedy, as were NormaTec sleeves to help "speed up recovery." Golden Bears HC Wilcox: "It's awesome. They're big pods that fully-close, with nice pads, with pillows and blankets that they can use before class and lifts and meetings. They just didn't have time to get home in between and get some good sleep as it was before, so this is perfect." Showers are required before entry. More. (link)
Also Noticed: New Mexico announces "El Lobo Rojo" beer, the result of a partnership between UNM and Albuquerque-based brewer Rio Bravo Brewing Company. (link); The College Football 150th Anniversary will provide a CFB150 logo for use on all uniforms next season. All Division I schools at the FBS and FCS levels have ordered the jersey patches and helmet decals are available as well. (link); Listen to the Washington Wizards PA announcer read off the starting lineup for the visiting New York Knicks, pretty funny. (link); Check out the alternate court the Miami Heat will use for 14 Miami "Vice" nights this season. Who will be the first to do this at the collegiate level? (link); Nike files a motion to dismiss parts of the class action gender pay discrimination lawsuit filed against the company in August, including violations of the Federal Equal Pay Act, the Oregon Equal Pay Act and intentional discrimination under the Oregon Equality Act. Nike claims, in part, that the suit lacks sufficient facts and that the definition of class is overly broad and would force the company to endure a "thicket of discovery." (link)
