The School of Public Policy & Administration (SPPA) is starting the year with great energy and enthusiasm! We are changing the format for Connect to make it more accessible. We have been printing hard copies of Connect for the last 10 years and thought that it was time to move to a more nimble, flexible, and more frequent publication by transitioning to an online format. RESEARCH IN ACTION
The Biden Challenge Conference & Ideas Exchange
From offering universal, lifelong education that targets in-demand job skills to rebuilding America’s infrastructure to focusing the political will on innovative policies, the Biden Challenge conference on Friday Sept. 28 at the University of Delaware produced a wealth of ideas for restoring the middle class. Addressing Racial Disparities in Student Discipline
On July 11, 2018, Governor John Carney signed a law that is intended to reduce racial disparities in student discipline in Delaware’s schools. Professor Leland Ware, a member of the Delaware Advisory Committee of the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, proposed discipline disparities as a topic of focus for the Committee which helped influence the policy that was signed. Local News and Political Ad Research Project

Was the 2016 election really unlike any we had ever seen? For political ads, it was true for the Presidential race. The losing candidate accounted for 75 percent of those ads as part of her total spending of over $1B. But, the winning candidate had Twitter on his side and a media system that gave him $5B in free coverage—called earned media. That imbalance had never happened before. Dr. Danilo Yanich's research gives us insight into the money spent on political ads—and potential implications for election results. Read more.
Messick Scholar Alumni Event and Reception

On October 29, Dr. Sandra O. Archibald, dean of the Evans School of Public Policy and Governance at the University of Washington presented the annual Messick Scholar lecture for the SPPA community and alumni. Read more about the Messick lecture series.
Exploring the Historic Architecture of Louisville, Kentucky
Professor Emeritus David Ames has spent his retirement so far researching the historic architecture of Louisville and presenting that research at conferences. Read more.
STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES
New Master of Public Policy (MPP) Program
We are now accepting applications for Fall 2019 admission into a new professional graduate degree program, the Master of Public Policy (MPP). As a well-recognized core degree at research universities across the nation, the program's objective is to provide advanced analytic and substantive knowledge of public policy to educate professionals for work in the public, private, and non-profit sectors on issues of public concern at all levels, local to global. Summer Study Abroad Focused on Leadership and Cultural Intelligence
In June 2018, 24 students shared a unique opportunity as they participated in SPPA’s first 3-week summer study abroad session in Italy and Spain. Far from being tourists, students deeply engaged in project work to explore how leaders are using cultural intelligence to advance their organizations and cultivate successful teams, while simultaneously they developed their own competencies as culturally intelligent leaders. CHAD Wins New Jersey Historic Preservation Award
Given annually by the State of New Jersey Historic Preservation Office and Historic Sites Council, the Historic Preservation Project Awards recognize projects judged to demonstrate exceptional merit in the field of historic preservation. The CHAD award was in the category of “Innovations.” Read more.
