EPA Announces Updates for Dicamba LabelThe EPA recently added new requirements to the dicamba label to further minimize damage to non-target crops resulting from dicamba used on dicamba-tolerant crops (over-the-top applications).  Registration, with these changes, is extended through the 2020 growing season. These are some of the bullets taken from the EPA’s announcement
1.    Only certified applicators may apply dicamba over the top. Those working under the supervision of a certified applicator may no longer make applications.
2.    Prohibit over-the-top application of dicamba on soybeans 45 days after planting.  (However, the label also includes a growth stage restriction that dicamba must be applied prior to beginning bloom (R1) or no more than 45 days after planting, whichever comes first. That is a little earlier than the previous label stated.)
3.    Applications will be allowed only from 1 hour after sunrise to 2 hours before sunset.
4.    In counties where endangered species may exist, the downwind buffer will remain at 110 feet and there will be a new 57-foot buffer around the other sides of the field.
5.    Clarified training period for 2019 and beyond, ensuring consistency across all three products.
6.    Enhanced tank clean-out instructions for the entire system.
7.    Enhanced label to improve applicator awareness on the impact of low pH’s on the potential volatility of dicamba.
Read the new labels for these products. More about the changes will be presented at winter training sessions, I am certain.
Private Pesticide Continuing Education (P-CIC) dates can be found here. The first session I am doing is on December 6 in Orange City, at 1:30 p.m. in the lower level of the Extension Office. Five other December meetings are scheduled for December in O’Brien, Plymouth, Monona, Osceola and Lyon counties.

Grazing Cover Crops Tours - Cattle producers and agri-business professionals are invited to participate in a tour featuring fall grazing of cover crops. Two tours are scheduled in Northwest Iowa – the first on November 30 in the Castana area and another December 3 in the Newell area. Each tour will feature two producers who are successfully grazing fall cover crops. Both tours are from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Featured topics include selection of fall cover crops, methods of seeding, herbicide selection for grazing, best management practices for fall grazing, and potential funding for cover crop establishment. The field days are sponsored by ISU Extension and Outreach, the Iowa Beef Center and the ISU Research and Demonstration Farms. See an article with more event details and registration information here.

Upcoming opportunities!
November 28 and 29: The 30th annual Integrated Crop Management Conference will be held in Ames at the Iowa State Center.  The program consists of 38 topics and participants can get up to 14 hours of continuing education credits as Certified Crop Advisers.  Registration is limited so don't delay. Registration and program details are found in the link.  The early registration deadline is midnight, November 16.

November 20:  Agronomy in the Field - a state-wide women's cohort, will host their second winter session using a distance teleconferencing system called ZOOM. Jamie Benning, ISUEO water quality program manager, will discuss progress made in the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy.  Jamie will also highlight edge of field practices and their role in reducing nutrient loss to Iowa's water bodies.  For more information on the series on how to participate, please click on the link above.

Mark your calendar! – Dates for the 14 Crop Advantage Conferences to be held in January around Iowa have been set. You can find the entire list here. Sites I am coordinating include Sheldon on January 3 and Le Mars on January 22. Site agendas and registration information will likely be posted during the next week.

Herbicide resistance and weed management course - ISU Extension Field Agronomists have  developed an online, self-paced course on developing a herbicide program to fight target weeds and understanding the emerging issue that is herbicide resistance. This course is available online for $50 and users can receive 3.0 pest management CCA CEUs upon completion of the course. Learn more about the course and register to take it  at this website location.
