Admissions
VOXY
The VOXY-UMD Bridge Program portal is now available for students with an English condition to access.  Their admission letter will contain a link to the English Language Requirements for Enrollment page which gives an explanation of the program and a link to the portal at https://buy.voxy.com/umdbridge/.  Students can sign up for the two month online course and work on improving their English.  They can then retake the TOEFL/IELTS/PTE after completing the program and should inform the Graduate School if they earn a higher score that will change their English condition.

If you have currently enrolled students who do not have an English condition but who you feel could benefit from additional English instruction, it would be fine for you to recommend that they enroll in the VOXY-UMD Bridge Program.  The student will be given the VOXY Proficiency Assessment at the beginning and at the end of the 2 month course so you will be able to see what progress they have made.

Professional and Career Development

  • In November there are a number of professional development events that doctoral students can attend to increase their knowledge of the job search process, possible career paths and employers. Selected events include Industry Job Search for PhDs, a trip to the U.S. Census Bureau, Networking for Introverts, Careers in Bioscience Panel and a Careers in Ag Extension Panel. Students must RSVP on the University Career Center’s event calendar.
  • Slides and handouts from some of this semester’s PhD Career Development Workshops are available on the Graduate School website. A downloadable flier of 2018-2019 PhD Career Development Workshops is also available online.
  • Save the date for the PhD Career Pathways Conference on Friday, April 19th, 9am - 2pm. Like last year’s conference, this event will expose current doctoral students and postdocs to possible career paths and connect them with PhD alumni. The event is a collaboration between the Graduate School and ten campus partners. More information about the panels and alumni attending will be available in January. Registration will begin on March 1st.
  • Fact: Having clearly defined career goals reduces doctoral student stress.  A new professional development “track” specifically for early stage (1st and second year) doctoral students will be piloted at this year’s January Success Symposium on 1/24/18. Three sequential 75-minute sessions will provide a deep dive into exploring careers that fit. Attendees will leave with a draft of a written professional development plan. More details coming soon.
  • How can you efficiently and effectively support the professional development of your current doctoral students? DGSs and CGSs are invited to schedule a 20 minute individualized consultation to discuss their doctoral students’ needs, share current and best practices and learn more about referring advisees to available

As you are planning for your early fall 2019 events for new and returning graduate students, the TLTC’s Fall Graduate Student Teaching Orientation will be held on Friday, August 23, 2019 in the Edward St. John Building.  We welcome the opportunity to talk with any department or program about our orientation and to work with them if they decide to encourage or require their graduate students to attend.

Aligning with the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) goals, the UTLP is a self-paced program that provides formal training at three levels: Associate, Practitioner, and Scholar. Graduate Policy Updates
Remote Participation in dissertation defense. The new policy permits multiple remote participations in a doctoral dissertation defense. The request must be made in advance and provide a compelling reason for the remote participation. The candidate, committee chair and Dean’s Representative are not permitted to participate remotely. The request for remote participation can be done via email and must include the following information: Candidate Name, Advisor/Chair name, date of defense, name of remote participant, reason for need to participate remotely, and acknowledgement of the remote participation policy.  This policy is effective immediately.

899/898 Credits. The Graduate Council has revised Graduate School requirements as they pertain to award of the PhD degree. The six (6) month time period between advancing to candidacy and eligibility to conduct a defense has been removed. The candidate is still required to complete 12 credits of 899 (Doctoral Dissertation Credits). In order to allow candidates to defend and earn the degree when they are deemed ready to defend, the department/program can submit a request to the Graduate School to allow 898 credits (Doctoral Research Credits) to be substituted for an equivalent amount of 899 credits. The 898 credits must only have been used in support of the candidate’s own research. Departments and programs that have used 898 as place fillers or independent study credits, must use another number. This policy is not yet in effect pending making changes in the student systems.
