Dear Students, Families, Alumni, Parishioners, and Friends of ASB School,

I hope you enjoyed the long weekend.  As we enjoyed the sunny weather, the extra day with our families, and lots of football, I hope everyone was able to take a moment to give thanks for the men and women who have served and continue to serve our country.  The sacrifices our veterans make are immeasurable and we are blessed by each and every one.

Like the weekend, my letter this week is long.  Sometimes there is just a lot to say, so please take the time to read.  I promise next week will make up for it with something very brief!

I mentioned last week that I am trying to be more intentional in my practice of gratitude.  Yesterday was World Kindness Day and I am particularly grateful for walking into the 5B classroom yesterday.  Multiple students came up to excitedly tell me how they were being intentionally kind on World Kindness Day.  I heard examples like looking for people who did not have someone to hang with on the playground, saying hello and smiling, sharing candy with their teacher, and even counting the number of hugs they gave.  Not only was I grateful for their efforts, I was especially grateful for how excited they were.  Being excited about being kind is about as good as it gets!

I was thinking this week about giving and being grateful for the opportunity to give.  During the month of November, my regular grocery store – as I am sure many of yours do – offers the opportunity to purchase “Hunger Bags,” providing a bag of food to a family in need.  I go to the grocery store pretty frequently and they ask me each time I go if I want to purchase another Hunger Bag.  I always say yes.  Do I always want to?  If I am being honest, there are of course those moments of being annoyed that I am being asked again, but in reality, the ten-dollar bag is going to make a much bigger difference to the family receiving it than I can probably imagine and is a simple way to show gratitude for my own blessings.  In the same vein, supporting the first grade Cereal Drive for St. Vincent de Paul this week allows us to do that as a community.  Please bring in cereal through Friday.  Next week, we will have our annual Apple Cup celebration and food drive.  Who can bring in more food for the food pantry – Cougars or Huskies?  Wear your purple & gold or crimson & gray gear on Tuesday and show the opponent who can do more for those in need!

An update on construction: As I mentioned last week, our pre-hearing conference for the building project was yesterday.  Here is the most updated information:
  • There will be a hearing on January 15th regarding the appeals that have been filed.  The majority of appellants did not have an interest in mediating, so we will be having a formal hearing.
  • There are several steps that occur between now and January 15th.  The first edition of a formal campaign newsletter will be distributed within the next week or so and will provide those details.
  • Following the hearing, the hearing examiner will issue a decision and the rest of the permitting process is put into motion.  From my understanding and my experience with the city so far, the timing of this is difficult to pinpoint but it definitely won’t be until after the hearing.  We will provide updates as we have them.

Leaving the pre-hearing conference, I certainly felt a bit deflated.  I know everyone has been awaiting the start of construction, people have been inconvenienced with the timing, and it feels like we continue to encounter more obstacles.  I thought a lot last night about how to frame this given my focus on gratitude.  As I read an article I have kept in my inbox, it became clear how easy it was to put this in the perspective of gratitude.  So here you go…

One of the best parts of my job is telling the ASB story.  Year after year, our story has been one of success and every year we are better than the year before. Why is that?  Well, as Denis Waitley said, it is because we are committed to success being our launching pad, not our resting place.  Every time we do something well, we commit to not settling for that moment of great, but using it as a stepping stone to something better.  And this year has already been full of success.  While we may be waiting for construction to start and launch us into new success, it is important to tell the story of the success that has already occurred.  Here are a few of those success stories:
  • Did you know that School Commission has written, reviewed, and approved our next three-year strategic plan?  Governance Council is in the process of review and once approved, we will have detailed initiatives to guide the next few years.  What an important illustration of our continued quest towards excellence and the hard work and collaboration of our leadership groups.

  • Did you know that we lowered the Annual Fund goal this year to be cognizant of all that we are asking our families to do, especially with the addition of the capital campaign?  And did you know that thanks to all of your generosity, we’ve already surpassed the Annual Fund goal in pledges?  As I have said before, the generosity of this community is a true gift.

  • Did you know that our students have been testing out some amazing technology in the last few weeks?  Technology that allows them to participate in virtual reality expeditions, dissection of cells, innovative problem-solving, and more!  It has been so very cool to watch them use this to enhance their learning.

  • Did you know that our fall play, A Christmas Carol, is completely sold out?  What an awesome testament to this community’s commitment to the arts and what a tremendous show of support to our young thespians. It’s going to be a wonderful show!

There is success all around us, each and every day.  While it is easy to get frustrated with the areas we have not yet seen success, I know in the long run it makes us better.  So I am grateful for the opportunity to learn a lot about the construction process as they definitely don’t teach you that when you get your administrator’s credential.  More importantly, I am grateful to be in a place where success is happening every day in a multitude of ways.  Let’s not rest on the success we’ve had so far, let’s continue to launch into even greater success for the future.

And if you didn’t feel like you had enough to read with my letter, here is a great article for parents! Have a wonderful rest of the week.

All my best,
Kathleen

Cereal Drive!
What first grader doesn’t like cereal?  What is more important than helping others? As part of ASB’s ongoing commitment to community service, the first grade will be collecting breakfast cereal for the Assumption Parish Food Bank. The first graders have asked the entire school community to be a part of the cereal collection.
We will be collecting boxes November 13th -16th. We appreciate your help in anyway!

Retake Picture Day Tuesday, November 27th.
Retakes are to correct photographers errors.
Students need to bring payment envelope or original packet of pictures to get a retake.
Any questions to Mary Patneaude
