As Our Region Faces Fire, Smoke and Disaster, Business Resilience Remains Top of Mind

The fires in Butte County and Southern California are a devastating reminder of how natural disasters can cripple a community.

The Capital Region is no stranger to natural disasters with recent floods and fires. We have also witnessed how earthquakes can destroy communities in seconds and the recent snow storm in New York is an example of how even our weather can affect our ability to move people and commerce.

Building resiliency within your organization is important for the health and sustainability of our businesses, workforce and community. We may not be able to stop all natural disasters, but there are steps that can be taken to protect and ensure our communities remain open for business. The Metro Chamber is partnering with Outsmart Disaster to create awareness and tools for the Capital Region's businesses. It all starts by taking the Resilient Business Challenge - an online step-by-step process that evaluates if your business is ready for a disaster. Now is the time to act and prepare.

How to Help Victims of the Fires

Camp Fire evacuees and emergency shelters are overwhelmed by the donation of clothing and other supplies. What is needed most is cash donations and gift cards. Here are a few resources for those looking to help:

Volunteers Needed for the American Red Cross
United Way Nor Cal Relief Fund
Fox40 & Salvation Army Donation Drive

In addition, nearly all of Northern California has been affected by smoke and the worst air quality on record. Various local and state agencies recommend staying indoors, while sporting events and schools temporarily close.
