Houthaven Air Cells

Sculptural ventilation towers to be placed in Amsterdam in the beginning of 2019.

Commissioned by the city of Amsterdam, Tjep. has designed four towers forming the ventilation vents of the new Spaarndammer tunnel in the center of Amsterdam. The towers with a height of 6 meters each form an origami of filigrane patterns inspired by microscopic images of leaves. These emission points will be placed right at the heart of a new park above the tunnel. The glossy ornamental structures represent photosynthesis but also reflect the surrounding trees, mixing representation and subject into a prominent landmark for the newly developed area.

The towers are made of polished stainless steel and the triangles are designed in such a way that they form their own self supporting structure.

After two years of development and engineering the production of the towers has recently been started.

Zwerm Eindhoven

Permanent interactive light installation in Eindhoven to be delivered later in 2019.

Interactive artwork commissioned by the city of Eindhoven (Netherlands) the project has been developed in close collaboration with Philips and Heijmans. The artwork entitled Zwerm (meaning swarm in Dutch) will mimic the coordinated movement of for example a flock of sparrows and will be following different streams of traffic on and under the, to be built, Montgomery overpass (2019). The entire installation spans a width of 21 meters and a length of over 60 meters. Zwerm will be reacting to levels of activity in the direct surrounding of the sculpture in a subtle manner. The imposing scale (a continuous loop of over 200 meters) of this dynamic, interactive intervention (1400 LED lights), going above and under ground, connecting different flows of traffic, strives to maximise an integrated experience in the urban landscape. The work forms a continuation of light installations designed by Frank Tjepkema in the public domain started in 2014 with Light Bridge for the Amsterdam Light Festival.

"Swarms of birds, fish or insects moving in formation are the ultimate example of elegance, coordination and intelligence of movement in nature, something we should be aspiring towards through the use of increasingly sophisticated and sustainable technologies in our transportation systems." Frank Tjepkema
