LAST TERM

Skills Development Competition

WINNERS ANNOUNCED


Over 900 students took part in skills development competition with different teams participating over 5 days in the main hall. Students took part in teams and were set 3 challenges that they had to complete within 30 minutes.  These challenges were designed to develop skills in creativity, collaborative problem solving, critical thinking, resilience and emotional intelligence. 
 
Challenge 1: To collaboratively write a new song around the theme of their choice using the structure and rhythm of Bob Marley’s song one love.
 
Challenge 2:  Redesign a cup to make it easier for a person who has a hand restriction to use.
 
Challenge 3:  To design a campaign about air pollution and the huge impact it has on young people’s health.
 
The winning team were a Level 1 team of students:
Loi Vincent Cledoro, Latif Hamza, Tamanna Islam, Anna Nedrika, Horia Shah Mohammad, Ionna Pappa, Erika Dragoi and Samia Islam

International Business Opportunities

LIVE MARKETING PROJECT


Business students have partnered with students from Kaufmännische Schulen Rheine, in Germany.  Together they will work on an exciting live marketing project for leading textile manufacturer Cawö. Their task is to come up with a new design and marketing campaign for bathrobes which appeals to a younger market. In February, NewVIc students will travel to Germany to pitch their ideas to the company.

Leanne Tansley wins 2018 Spirit of Cricket Award

NEWHAM SUPER1S COMPETE AT LORD'S

Newham competed in the Lord’s Taverners Super 1s Finals at Lord’s last month, while player Leanne Tansley deservedly won the 2018 Spirit of Cricket award. Tansley picked up the Super 1s Spirit of Cricket award after being recognised as ‘an inspiration to many’ through her making of friends on the programme, learning of new skills and having fun.

Newham Super1s takes place on a Wednesday 5pm to 6pm at NewVIc and is open to anyone is Newham who has a disability.

CoppaFeel! is a breast cancer awareness charity, on a mission to educate and remind young people to get to know theirs boobs in order to catch breast cancer early.
 
Almost 50,000 women and 400 men get diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK each year. The sooner young people are educated about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, the sooner they’ll be able to spot when something’s not right and be confident in seeking medical advice.
 
Join us in the Main hall for a light hearted yet frank talk about an issue that is often considered private or taboo.

Fundraising and awareness will follow in the Link from 1.00pm.

Professor Hugh Bowden from King's College University presents a lecture and discussion on Ancient Religion.  Relevant subjects: History, Philosophy, Religious Studies.

STEM ACCESS DAY

OXFORD UNIVERSITY, WADHAM COLLEGE

 
STEM students have been invited to Wadham College at the Oxford University to take part in academic taster sessions in Chemistry and Physics.  The students will also visit the department of Computer Science and will tour the college with Oxford's Student Ambassadors.

LEADERSHIP IN CREATIVE ARTS


Do you think that one of your friends or classmates deserve recognition for their commitment, contribution or dedication to college or community activities? Then you should nominate them to win a Jack Petchey Achievement Award.

Winners receive a certificate, a badge, membership of the JPF Achievers community and £250 to spend on something of their choice that will benefit students at the college (for example, a piece of equipment, a day out for their tutor group or class, a specialist trainer to come in).

Entry 1 Book Club students are taking part in the Reading Ahead Challenge.  Students are now well into the challenge and some have already completed their diaries with their second book.

PERFORMING ARTS

Tuesday 20th November

STRATFORD CIRCUS ARTS CENTRE


Performing Arts have been working on a project with Stratford Circus around a show called Nightclubbing, exploring themes of “sheroes”, cultural icons, intersectionality, female and broader femme representation and celebration of diversity.  Students have had a workshop with the creator of the show Rachael Young and have been devising their own piece around the themes.  They will show this to Rachel and other production staff at Stratford Circus and get feedback on their work on Tuesday 20th November.

PHOENIX DANCE THEATRE, LEEDS


NewVIc Dance Company (NDC) are going to Leeds! They have been invited to undertake a professional tour to showcase and perform at their ResTec (stands for Respect and Protect) dance platform. Students have been working towards a performance piece for World Aids Week and, in partnership with Phoenix Dance Theatre.

OCTOBER BOOK

They Both Die at the End

This novel seemed to really grip the Book Club's imagination, and brought up all sorts of questions. What would we do if we knew we had just 24 hours to live? Would we want to know? A heartbreaking, heartwarming journey before the emotional end.  This book will inspire you to live bigger and better.
