Rum cake season is here!
It's been another incredible year at Jude's / Table Ocho / Belly Up BBQ / (and Trademark Denied Rum). Teresa and I were so happy to travel and see so many of you this year. It's been 10 years since I left my corporate job, and I'd like to thank each and every one of you for your support and feedback over the years. So, here's the update - -
We started making our own rum specifically for the cake 4 years ago. As many of you know, Monarch, my first name choice, was trademarked, so we decided to go with Trademark Denied. The rum used in the cake is barrel-aged for 2.5 years in neutral Missouri oak barrels. Some of the rum has been in barrel for almost 4 years. We plan to bottle and release a small allocation in 2019. We also have our own commercial proprietary cake mix blend. My friend, Tom, and I have been working on the blend for the past 2 years. We are toying with releasing a home rum cake kit in 2019. Our relationships with our suppliers are stronger than ever. The pecans continue to come from Nevada, MO (200 year-old orchards). We still produce all cakes out of our little 925 sq ft kitchen space in Lenexa, KS, and we are as happy with the rum cake today as we were 15 years ago!
Table Ocho passed the 5-year mark in July. Thanks to all my farmers and for your support over the years. We still have Table Ocho extra virgin olive oil for $25/750ml bottle, along with several 'pantry' items available for gift packs or home use. We continue to make seasonings under the Belly Up name. They are great on lamb, chicken, pork, beef, or atop a spicy Bloody Mary.
We passed 33,000 cakes last year. This year we are hoping to share 40,000 cakes across the nation and beyond.
