This Week at CBU

VETERAN'S DAY: A PRAYER 

God of mercy, we ask for blessings on all those who have served their country in the armed forces.
We ask for healing for the veterans who have been wounded, in body and soul, in conflicts around the globe. 
We pray especially for the young men and women, in the thousands, who are coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan with injured bodies and traumatized spirits. Bring solace to them, O Lord. May we pray for them when they cannot pray. 
Have mercy on all our veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Bring peace to their hearts and peace to the regions they fought in. 
Bless all the soldiers who served in non-combative posts. May their calling to serve continue in their lives in many positive ways.
Give us creative vision to see a world that, growing weary with fighting, moves to affirming the life of every human being and so moves beyond war.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK 

International Education Week is November 12-16. International Education Week is nationally recognized with the intent of promoting internationalization and global exchange in higher education. CBU's International Program Planning Committee will host multiple events this week and have invited guest speakers to facilitate sessions specifically for international students at CBU.
• MHIRT PROGRAM INFORMATION SESSION: Daryl Stephens from Rhodes College will be facilitating an information session on the Minority Health International Research Training (MHIRT) program on Monday, November 12 for students to learn more about participating in the Summer 2019 MHIRT program. Assisi Hall 122, 1:00-2:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided.
• UNDERSTANDING HEALTHCARE AND INSURANCE IN THE UNITED STATES: Jim Bueno from International Student Protection will host a session for international students on Tuesday, November 13 to learn more about your health insurance policy and how healthcare works in the U.S. Montesi Executive Center, 12:30-1:30 p.m.
• TAPPING INTO THE U.S. JOB/INTERNSHIP MARKET: Career Services will be hosting a session in Montesi Executive Center specifically for international students to learn how to tap into the U.S. job market. Tuesday, November 13, 3:30-4:30 p.m.
• GLOBAL SCOOP: STUDENTS SHARE THEIR STORIES LIVING AND STUDYING ABROAD: Are you interested in studying in a different country? Former study abroad program participants and international students will share their personal experiences living and studying abroad on Wednesday, November 14 in Rosa Deal 111 from noon to 1:00 p.m. Come and enjoy some free ice cream!
• INTERNATIONAL TRIVIA AND GAME NIGHT: Enjoy an international-themed night of games, trivia, food, and fun in the LLC's Wilson Family Commons on Wednesday night, 7:00-9:30 p.m. All students, staff, and faculty are welcome!
FCA MEETING 
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes will hold a meeting on Monday, November 12 at 8:00 p.m. in the Skybox of Canale Arena. Snacks will be provided.
PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH MEETINGS
As most of you know, Dr. Smarrelli will be concluding his career as president of CBU at the conclusion of this academic year. As we celebrate his achievements, the CBU community is also looking forward to the future to continue his legacy of Lasallian education and to attract a leader for the next chapter of CBU's history. CBU will host a team this week from RH Perry & Associates, a higher education executive recruiting firm, to educate them about our campus and our collective vision for the future. The Presidential Search Committee has scheduled the following sessions for students, faculty, and staff to meet with the Perry team. All sessions will be held in the University Theater. 
• STUDENTS: Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. and Thursday at 11:00 a.m.
• FACULTY: Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. and Thursday at 1:45 p.m. 
• STAFF: Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. and Thursday at 9:45 a.m.
STRESS REDUCTION SEMINARS 
Everyone is invited to a series of stress reduction seminars where participants will be STILL… be PRESENT… be PROACTIVE. Dr. Pong Malasri, Dean of Gadomski School of Engineering, will facilitate the meditation series on Wednesday, November 14 and again on January 31 in the Thomas Center Conference Room, 1:00-1:50 p.m. This program is offered as a service from Health and Prevention Services
ESTIMATHON
EXTRAPOLATE. INTERPOLATE. OVERCOME. The CBU student branch of the Mathematical Association of America is holding its Estimathon on Wednesday, November 14 at 7:00 p.m. in Sabbatini Lounge. Participants will use their best estimating and guessing skills to answer questions. The event cost $1 per person to enter, and partipants will play in teams. A prize will be given to the winners, and snacks and drinks will be provided. 
TRANSCRIBE & TASTE

An 18th-century recipe book + two hours of socializing = A searchable e-Cookbook.
Join students from Dr. Juliette Paul’s "Restoration and 18th Century" English course at CBU’s Crosstown Concourse location on Friday, November 16 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to help unlock historic recipes held at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC. Along with other Crosstown Concourse tenants and volunteers, they’ll collaborate to create a searchable, digital copy of an 18th-century English cookbook. Participants will also have the opportunity to sample delicious pastries, cookies, and drinks inspired by the recipes contained within the handwritten cookbooks and prepared onsite. After being transcribed, the recipe book will be published online as a searchable text for others to use. No experience necessary! The students will walk you through the coding and show you how to decipher old handwriting. Just bring your laptop and a friend!
MY FAVORITE FILM SERIES

The "My Favorite Film" series continues on Friday, November 16 at 7:00 p.m. in Spain Auditorium with Student Life guru Wilson Phillips' favorite — Forrest Gump! Kick back and relax and come learn why it’s Wilson's favorite movie! Popcorn, candy, and drinks will be provided! The final film to come in the series is the favorite of Brother Tom Sullivan! AVENUE 
The Catholic Student Association will host Avenue — a time for fellowship and spiritual reflection that is open to everyone — at 8:00 p.m. in Stritch Chapel on Sunday, November 18. 

Lasallian Jubilee Year Begins!


The Lasallian Jubilee Year marking the 300th anniversary of the death of Saint John Baptist de La Salle will begin on November 17, when we recall the dedication of the  sanctuary of the Founder at the Generalate in Rome. A Jubilee Year offers the opportunity to express our faith through concrete actions in favor of those most in need. Celebrate the Jubilee through practical acts of kindness and service to young people yearning for mercy and compassion.The details of events  being organized by the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools will soon be provided, along with resources for our local use and suggestions for creating pilgrimage experiences.

What: Three-on-Three Basketball Tournament meant to raise money to be donated to the American Cancer Society for Breast Cancer Research and Awareness.

Dr. Juan Carlos Olabe (Electrical & Computer Engineering) presented a paper entitled "Strategies for the Successful Implementation of STEAM in the Classroom” at the 2nd International Conference on Education and E-Learning, held in Bali, Indonesia, November 5-7. The paper will appear in the International Conference Proceedings Series by ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) ISBN: 978-1-4503-6577-2. This work is supported by the University of the Basque Country.

Attention Seniors & Graduate Students!

This is a friendly reminder that a graduation application is required in order for all degrees to be conferred. If you plan to graduate in DECEMBER, and you have not already completed a graduation application, you must do so immediately. Please be advised that the graduation application deadline for December graduates has passed, and those filing after the September 15 deadline will now be assessed a $50 late fee in addition to the $130 standard graduation fee. 
For students anticipating graduation in May or August, the graduation application deadline is December 1. 
The $130 graduation fee is applied at the beginning of the semester in which graduation is anticipated. This application fee is applicable for one year. After this time, students who have not completed their degree requirements will be removed from the graduation list, and they must reapply for graduation, as well as repay the graduation fee. Those filing after the stated deadlines will be assessed a non-refundable late fee of $50.

In Memoriam

Janet Wallace Glaser, wife of Don Glaser (Professor Emeritus, Electrical & Computer Engineering), passed away on November 1 after a courageous battle with cancer. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, November 5, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, please make your memorial donations to Birthright of Memphis. 
Dr. Henry H. Luttrell (Chemical Engineering, Retired) passed away on November 2 at the Mississippi State Veterans Home in Oxford, MS. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 7 at Hixson Brothers Funeral Home in Pineville, LA  at 12:00 p.m. followed by a 2:00 p.m. graveside service at Bay Springs Cemetery in Chopin, LA. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to Alzheimer’s Disease Research.

Think Safety: Tips from Campus Police

CAVEAT EMPTOR! Online Buyers Beware
Researchers say transactions from a foreign IP address are seven times riskier than average. Websites based in China and Venezuela are the riskiest to shop from. One red flag is that the domain name looks a little off. The Better Business Bureau says a site with the URL "pandorapick.com" advertised what it said was Pandora jewelry, but buyers actually received counterfeit merchandise. The real Pandora site is Pandora.net. Other tips are bad grammar in the ad copy, no encryption to protect your credit card, and unusually low prices. You also need to look for a return policy. If the seller doesn't have a return policy, don't buy anything! Also, make sure the site has contact information. Don't risk a purchase if there is no recourse when you have a problem. Anyone with a computer can set up a website, so it's important to know the seller's physical address and phone number. Happy shopping!

Deck the Arches!


Christmas is just around the corner, which means it's time to get festive! To celebrate, the CBU is once again hosting "Deck the Arches," the Christmas Archway Decorating Competition! All student organizations and any other groups are invited to participate, so please fill out the form at bit.ly/deckthearches before Friday, November 30. A few things to remember, if you compete:
  • If you include decorations that require power (lights, etc.), your team is responsible for working with CBU Maintenance to ensure proper installation and safety protocols are followed.
  • Archways will be judged on Wednesday, December 5. Winners will be announced at the CBU Christmas Celebration that evening. At least one member from the team must be present.
  • Archway decorations must be removed on or before Tuesday, December 10 (or your organization will be fined). Each organization is responsible for returning their archway to its original state following the competition.
  • Content must be tasteful, and is subject to removal at the discretion of the Office of Student Life at any time.

BOOK RELEASE PARTY
CBU will host the Official Release Party for a new book by Candous S. Brown (English '07, MAT '12) entitled The Life of an Educator and the new publishing company, One Dove Ink, the creation of Reginald O. McCray (BSBA-Management '05) on December 4 at 7:00 p.m. in Sabbatini Lounge. Brown, a teacher in Shelby County Schools for the past 11 years, wrote The Life of an Educator as her story and a plan of action to educate the teachers of the future. Copies of the book can be pre-ordered at www.onedoveink.com for $20.00 and received signed by the author that night as well.
IMPROVISATION NIGHT 
The Theatre Department will be presenting Improvisation Night at the University Theater at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 6. Students of the Improvisation class will perform games in the tradition of "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" Admission is free.

Buc Bulletin

CROSS COUNTRY: The CBU cross country teams close out the 2018 season on Saturday, November 17, when they run in the NCAA South Regional in Lakeland, FL.
MEN'S BASKETBALL (2-0, 0-0 GSC): The Bucs started the season off strong with a wire-to-wire victory over the Central State Marauders 78-56 on Friday. In their home rematch on Saturday, the Bucs never trailed in an 86-76 win over Central State at Canale Arena. The Bucs return to action Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. as they host No. 3/2 Lincoln Memorial. Full schedule… 
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL (0-0, 0-0 GSC): Austin Peay State University scored 26 points off of 22 CBU turnovers as they claimed the 100-62 exhibition game victory over the Lady Bucs Friday night. The Lady Bucs tip off the regular season on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. as they take on LeMoyne-Owen at Canale Arena. Full schedule…
