Recap I: Matt Wilson's "Honey and Salt" at Dizzy's

The weekend at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola with Matt Wilson's incredible Carl Sandburg project "Honey and Salt" turned out to be quite an event, especially the second night on Saturday, October 13th: first of all a representative of the association of jazz journalists handed Matt a trophy for best jazz musician AND best album of the year.

Then we found out that jazz legend Lee Konitz decided to celebrate his 91st birthday with us at the club:
The absolute highlight of the evening though was when three of the five band members' children joined the performance: first Audrey Wilson and our son Alexander sang background vocals on "Offer and Rebuff"; then Ron's daughter Justice improvised a beautifully expressive dance on  "Night Stuff" – the next generation is ready to leave a mark!

Recap II: European Tour with the "Light Blue Quartet"

In the October edition I caught myself whining a bit about the work that it took to put together not only one, but two quartet tours to Europe this year; after the experience of the last 10 days with my newly dreamed up "Light Blue Quartet" featuring Anat Cohen, Gary Versace and Matt Wilson I know that it was all well worth it: The trust, camaraderie and love on and off the bandstand was just remarkable and resulted in some of the most amazing group playing that I have ever been part of – even towards the end of the tour the music still felt absolutely fresh and unpredictable and went to unforeseen places…actually very much like it happened with my regular quartet with Scott Robinson, Bill Cunliffe and Joe LaBarbera, where our final concert of our summer tour at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival turned out to be one of our most adventurous concerts that we have ever played!

Here are some impressions from the Light Blue Quartet tour:
  1. Muri, Switzerland

2. Bologna, Italy

The tour led us through the South of Germany, Switzerland and Italy, and the food throughout was nothing short of spectacular…the Carpaccio of squid with truffle cream (Ancona) and the tortellini in broth (Bologna) come to mind, but we had too many excellent culinary experiences to list them all.

Here are some photos of the amazing places we visited:
Tübingen
Neuburg
Ancona
Palermo
Our night at the Birdland Jazzclub in Neuburg, Germany was recorded for Bavarian Public Radio and will be broadcasted on January 19 of next year; and our evening in Muri, Switzerland was beautifully videotaped and edited by curator and founder of the "Musik im Pflegidach", Stephan Derkheim.

Already published on YouTube is our version of my tune "Remember October 13th", a tribute to Mr. Ray Brown:

After our final quartet concert in Ferrara, Italy and about 2 hours of sleep we all drove to the Bologna airport on November 1, and while Anat headed back to the U.S., Matt, Gary and I took a Ryan Air flight (watch out!) to Palermo where we played a trio concert at the new jazz club "Tatum Art", founded by our dear old friend Toti Cannistraro.

Even though we missed Anat the concert was absolutely swinging – Gary certainly stepped up to the plate that night!

Here you see us saying goodbye at the Bologna airport:
I could not have made this tour happen without my friend Giancarlo DiNapoli; he helped organize four concerts in Italy and also suggested, that Matt and I should record an album together with the wonderful Italian pianist, Rita Marcotulli. So we stayed for an extra couple of days to prepare, rehearse and record what turned out to be a very eclectic tribute to their former bandleader, Dewey Redman.

A lot of the music was rather adventurous, but we also recorded some Blues tunes and a couple of gorgeous ballads.

We are supposed to do an "LP release" tour in July of 2019, and I can't wait!

Phoenix, Arizona with Bill Cunliffe

Bill and I have been playing music together now for many, many years, both in my quartet and in his wonderful trio together with my friend Tim Horner.
We'll be going out West to Arizona this month to play at "The Nash" jazz club among other things.

Kennedy Center Honors 2018

For the fourth year in a row I will be going down to Washington, D.C. to be part of the Kennedy Center Honors show on Sunday, December 2nd.

This year's recipients are Philip Glass, Cher, Reba McEntire and …Wayne Shorter!

I can't wait to see who they'll be inviting for his musical tribute…they could not possibly do this without involving Herbie Hancock"..would you agree?
