Truth and Truthiness:
Belief, Authenticity, Rhetoric, and Spin in the Middle Ages and Renaissance

The capacity of language both to communicate truth and to manipulate perceptions of it was as vexed a problem for the Middle Ages and Renaissance as it is today. From Augustine to Erasmus, enthusiasm for the study of rhetoric was accompanied by profound concern about its capacity to mask the difference between authenticity and deceit, revelation and heresy, truth and truthiness. Even the claim of authenticity or transparency could become, some thinkers argued, a deliberate form of manipulation or “spin.” In our current era when public figures aim to create effects of immediacy and authenticity, this conference looks at the history of debates about rhetoric and, more generally, about the presentation of transparency and truthfulness. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this conference considers the role of the verbal arts in the history of literature, law, politics, theology, and historiography, but also broadens the scope of rhetoric to include such topics as the rhetoric of the visual arts and the language of the new science to produce effects of objective access to “things themselves.”
Plenary speakers will be Lorna Hutson (University of Oxford) and Dyan Elliott (Northwestern University).

Atomism in Philosophy.
A History from Antiquity to the Present

Atomism is an important idea that has been employed for different purposes and in different contexts, throughout the history of human thought. It is also a rather elusive idea, which has been applied and understood by philosophers, historians, scientists, physicists in very different ways—ways that have often been conflicting, as well as causing widespread debate. This has been particularly the case in ancient philosophy (when atomism was discovered and widely debated); in ancient non-Western, Arabic and late Medieval thought; in the Renaissance (when alongside the re-discovery of ancient thought, atomism as a doctrine of the mind and matter was brandished by such philosophers as Leibniz); in the history and philosophy of chemistry after Dalton; in early analytic philosophy (with Russell and Wittgenstein); in contemporary metaphysical debates about structure, time and reality; in current debates in quantum physics.
The Collection will consist of 35 papers and will aim to become an important work of reference on the philosophy of atomism for some time to come. While I have already approached some contributors with whom I have been discussing this project in the last year, I now invite the submission of 5 to 7 new papers, to make the collection even more wide-ranging and philosophically complete.
Any paper dealing with any aspect of atomism will be considered for inclusion in the collection. I am also particularly keen on considering papers dealing with:

International Conference on the Birth of Universities in the Peripheries of Europe
From the Scriptorium to the Library

The model of the birth of universities in Europe has long been established taken as a model the developments that occurred in continental Western Europe particularly as a result of well-known processes: the Carolingian Renaissance, the vernacularisation of culture, the increasing relevance of cities, the empowerment of new social groups. Nevertheless, in large parts of what today is considered Europe, let alone Eurasia, the social and intellectual factors that defined this emergence of universities were often not present, or not all of them. In areas where the process of Christianization, and sometimes also literacy, had taken place later, or where the role of monasteries as the only centres of learning and literary activity lasted longer, or where a more or less permanent warfare existed, or where the adequate social environment had not yet been developed, the scriptoria and the libraries of monasteries and convents kept learning and cultural traditions for longer, often against all odds.
The aim of the present conference is to discuss and analyse, among others, aspects and questions such as:
What was the role of royal patronage in pushing forward this model of transmission of knowledge?
What is the impact of manuscript techniques (vis à vis the printing press) in the intellectual history of these areas?
How did the monastic environment conform the literary/philosophical/scientific/theological canon?
What was the educational role of these institutions?
How the knowledge transmitted was censored or slanted, if it was?
What social impact did these monastic learning communities have in their respective social environments?
How was the process of creation of universities in these areas, when and by whom?
In which respects, if in any, were nunneries different from the male counterparts?
The International Conference is organised by the Centre of Humanities if IE University on the occasion of the 800th Anniversary of its site in Segovia, a former Dominican foundation protected by the Spanish crown. A call for papers to participate is now open. Please send your title and abstract (200-300) to Susana.torres@ie.edu by November 30th, 2018.
On-campus accommodation and meals for speakers will be covered by the Centre of Humanities of IE University. Attendance for those wishing to attend without presenting a paper is free.
Papers will be published in an extraordinary volume of the peer-reviewed, indexed journal Oppidum.

Special Issue of Theoria
Medieval Skepticism
The high point of scholarly debate on the history of skepticism was the 1970’s and the 1980’s. It was Ancient and Early Modern skepticism that was debated then, and some groundbreaking books and articles were produced as a result. After that intense debate the interest waned somewhat and the history of skepticism does not attract as much interest anymore. Scholarly debate on Medieval skepticism has never reached such a highpoint, in fact, there has been relatively little interest in skeptical debates and skepticism in the Middle Ages. By devoting a special issue of Theoria to Medieval skepticism, we hope to change this and interest a new generation of scholars in questions about the role skepticism and skeptical arguments played in the Middle Ages.
In this context, we define Medieval philosophy broadly to include philosophy and philosophical theology between the time of Augustine and Francisco Suárez, that is, roughly between 400 and 1600 CE. We also welcome articles dealing with skepticism in any of the four language traditions, that is, Latin, Arabic, Hebrew, and Greek. Our hope is to present skepticism in the Middle Ages in a new light, and with such breadth and depth that Medieval skepticism can finally take its place in a comprehensive history of skepticism alongside Ancient and Modern.
All submitted articles should be written in English and will be subject to double blind review.

Joint Fellowship I Tatti & the Warburg Institute
The fellowship is designed for early and mid-career scholars in the field of history, with preference given to advanced research projects that address the history of science and knowledge related to early modern Italy, including transnational connections between Italy and other cultures. Scholars can also apply to work on the transmission and circulation of ideas, objects, and people during the Renaissance, into and beyond the Italian peninsula, or on the historiography of the Italian Renaissance, including the rebirth of interest in the Renaissance in later periods. 4 Scholarships for Doctoral Studies funded by the DAAD
The Berlin Graduate School of Ancient Studies (BerGSAS) announces a total of four doctoral scholarships with funding from the Graduate School Scholarship Program (GSSP) of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
The scholarships will start on October 1, 2019 and will be granted upon acceptance into the BerGSAS. The scholarships are linked to the following doctoral programs of BerGSAS: Ancient Philosophy and History of Ancient Science or Languages and Cultures of the Silk Road.
The call is open only to applicants who are not German citizens.

Germana Ernst International Prize
for Campanella Studies
First Edition (2018-2019)
On the second anniversary of Germana Ernst’s passing, her relatives together with the editor and collaborators of the international journal Bruniana & Campanelliana: Ricerche filosofiche e materiali storico-testuali are launching an award in her memory. Ernst was a scholar of Campanella’s work and of Renaissance philosophical culture, as well as the journal’s co-founder and co-editor. The initiative aims at encouraging, promoting and enhancing the academic activity of young scholars regarding the figure and writings of Tommaso Campanella. The initiative is being held under auspices of Archivio Tommaso Campanella, which is dedicated to Germana Ernst and hosted by the Istituto per il Lessico Intellettuale Europeo e Storia delle Idee of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (ILIESI-CNR).
Object of the selection: an original and unpublished contribution devoted to the work and figure of Tommaso Campanella (historical-biographical, philological-textual, critical-interpretative or relative to the reception of his work). The study, which must not exceed 60,000 characters (notes and spaces included), may be written in the following languages: Italian, English, French, Spanish, German.
Submission deadline: 15 June 2019.
