Pizza Lunch Fact vs Myth

Myth #1:  School Staff run pizza lunch.
FALSE!!  Pizza lunch is 100% run by volunteers - parent volunteers coordinate and make the lunch happen.  There are also student volunteers who help with pizza lunch.  Because it is run by volunteers, not staff, we have no access to class lists or student info - we process orders by what is on the order envelopes only - your student will be placed in the class listed on the order envelope.  If your student changes classes please email us at dukepizzalunch@yahoo.com.  While we try our best, we are not perfect and definitely not clairvoyant - please communicate with us!!

Myth #2:  Lots of extra pizza is ordered - last minute/day of orders are fine!!
FALSE!!   It would be very wasteful to order all kinds of extra pizza - we only order what is needed.  The pizza is ordered one week before each lunch (due to the huge size of our delivery).  Deadlines for each pizza lunch can be found on dukesac.ca/pizza-lunch.

Myth #3:  Students don't need to sign up to to get pizza lunch.
FALSE!!  All students must fill in an order envelope to receive pizza - we can't give pizza to a student without it.  Two reasons for this:  1) we don't know if a student has parent permission unless it is filled out and 2) we don't know what to order for your student if they have not filled out an envelope.  See Myth #2.  Pizza sponsorships are available but an envelope still needs to be filled out to ensure we order enough pizza (please contact us or Ms. Helpert to sign up for a sponsorship).

Fact #1:  Pizza staff like to solve problems.
TRUE!!  We try hard to solve all pizza issues on the spot - students can speak to the volunteers at lunch.  Parents, please let your student know what you have ordered for them.  We can only serve what has been ordered - often students think their order is something different and there is disappointment at the lunch.

Junglesport is Here!

Junglesport for Duke starts tomorrow! Bring in your consent form tomorrow to participate with your respective class.

Our Junglesport Night event is almost sold out! Confirmation emails will be sent out tomorrow evening. If you have not yet submitted your ticket request, get it in!  This is open to everyone in our Duke community (ages 4+), who maybe didn't get a chance to participate or just REALLY enjoyed it.

When: Thurs Nov 8 *ONE NIGHT ONLY*
Time: (2 Sessions) 6:00p.m. or 7:00p.m.
Cost: $10 per person which includes pizza and drink (food will be served 30 minutes before climb)

Tickets are limited and will be on a first come first served basis.  Please review and complete the attached order form and return to the school ASAP to guarantee your spot! Thank you to our SAC for introducing and supporting this opportunity!

FAQs:

  1. My child participated at school, can they also do the night sessions? Yes. Whether they’ve done it during the day or not all, students and their families are welcome to register for a night session.
  2. Do you have to climb with your kids? No you do not have to climb. Your kids can do it on their own. You can assist from the ground if you wish.
  3. My child is not yet 4, can we squeeze them in? If they are turning 4 this calendar year (on or before December 31, 2018) they are welcome to participate.
  4. Will my little kid be safe around the big kids? Yes; the kids are spaced out.  There is no contact between participants.
  5. Can my child bring a friend? If the parent or guardian of the child is present to sign the waiver, your friend can participate in the event.
  6. Is it open to anyone in the community? We would like Duke students and their families to have this opportunity first as space is limited. We will extend the invitation outside of Duke on Tuesday if space is still available.
If you have any questions please contact info@dukesac.ca.

Duke Musical 2019

Callback auditions start this week!

Congratulations to the 34 students who have received a callback for a leading role for the 2019 Duke Musical!  If your child auditioned and did not receive a callback, they may still be offered a role in the production within a few weeks.

A reminder that callback auditions start this Wednesday - here are some additional details:
  • There is now a song list that the students must prepare for their callback along with another piece of dialogue - different from what they did for their first audition.  The list of songs (along with the karaoke tracks that they will be singing to) and the dialogue pieces can be found here.
  • Everything must now be FULLY MEMORIZED and students may be expected to sing the entire song.
  • This is the final round of auditions that will determine the lead characters - students should be prepared!  If your child misses their audition, they may not be able to audition at another time due to time constraints.
Should you have any questions, please contact either Mr. Caruso or Ms. Pierce.

Good luck to all those auditioning!

Let’s get Festive!

Once again, SAC is organizing a Poinsettia Sale. Buy a poinsettia or festive centrepiece for your table or for a friend, neighbour or loved one.  Choose from a range of colours and sizes.

Please return your order form and payment to the school NO LATER than Wed, Nov 14.  Check your child's bag tomorrow for a copy too.

All plants and festive centrepieces will be available for Pick Up at the Annual Holiday Breakfast:

Indigo Adopt-A-School

Mrs. Zwolinski would like to take a moment to thank Coles in the Beach, students, parents and community members who donated to our library through the Indigo Adopt-A-School Program.  In partnership with Coles in the Beach Duke of Connaught Library raised $2,234! At the top of the shopping list for the Library is the Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada published by Canadian Geographic in both English and French.

Do you love our library?

Consider filling out the quick “My School Library Rocks” contest survey from the Ontario School Library Association.

Duke Cares

Every now and then people could use a helping hand. At Duke, we want to make sure that every child has warm wear for winter and food in their tummies every single day -- and can participate in field-trips and Pizza Lunch. If you ever need a hand, please reach out to Vice Principal Kelli Helpert - Kelli.Helpert@tdsb.on.ca, 416-393-9455 x 20011 (in the office), or any staff member you feel comfortable talking to. There are resources available for Duke families. (Privacy will be respected).
