Luis Rivera
Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine

Luis Rivera is Barry University’s new Delegate for the class of 2022. People would be surprised to learn that Luis is already a podiatrist, previously practicing in Australia. He mentioned that pursuing podiatric medicine was one small change that made a big impact on his life.

When asked why he chose Podiatry, he stated, “because it offers something that no other field in medicine can offer. We are exposed to almost every field of medicine every day, ranging from a small skin or nail condition to a complex diabetic patient with a neuropathic ulcer. We also get exposed to sports injuries, pediatrics, and surgery. All types of cases can be seen in one day, which makes this career unique and very interesting.”

Luis’ dream mentor would be Kevin Kirby, a podiatrist he admires most because he has revolutionized biomechanical theories and made a personal impact on Luis’ choice in podiatry.

NYCPM: Training Tomorrow’s Leaders in Podiatric Medicine

In an effort to raise awareness about the amazing field of podiatry, the New York College of Podiatric Medicine is excited to share 4 new student recruitment videos, which was made possible with a generous grant from the NYSPMA Foundation and spearheaded by Dean Lisa Lee.

Students from the NYCPM delegation shared their experiences in all four videos. APMSA Delegate Monique Dyquiangco (Class of 2021) spoke about the enriching research opportunities available to students at NYCPM. President-Elect Tomas Milisits (Class of 2021) spoke about his experience as a dual degree DPM/MPH student in conjunction with the Mt. Sinai Ichan School of Medicine. President Ronald Lowe (Class of 2020) highlighted the benefits of choosing podiatry as a speciality. APMSA Delegate Joseph Coppola (Class of 2020) can be seen observing in the OR alongside Dr. Bergeron and resident Dr. Jabra. APMSA Delegate Mohammed Gheith and Parliamentarian Karla De La Mata also made candid cameos working hard at the FCNY Clinic.

The videos will be used by Student Services on the College's new YouTube channel, NYCPM Enrollment, as well as at open houses, on college campuses, and via a social media campaign. This will start in early November.

One focus of National Diabetes Month this year is promoting health after gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy. Mothers who’ve had gestational diabetes need to know that they and their children have an increased lifelong risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

Most of the time, gestational diabetes goes away after the baby is born. Even if the diabetes goes away, these mothers have a greater chance of getting diabetes — and the child from that pregnancy is at future risk for obesity and type 2 diabetes. In fact, half of all women who had gestational diabetes go on to develop type 2 diabetes.

As the effects of diabetes on foot health can become serious without detection or treatment, it is vital for those at risk for diabetes to monitor their health and seek treatment if and when necessary.

Call for Comment - CPME Revisions

Proposed revisions to CPME publications 120 and 130 are scheduled for consideration by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) in April 2019. Every six (6) years, CPME conducts a comprehensive review of its standards, requirements, and procedures associated with its evaluation activities. In 2016, the Council appointed an Ad Hoc Advisory Committee (Committee) to review CPME publication 120, Standards and Requirements for Accrediting Colleges of Podiatric Medicine and CPME publication 130, Procedures for Accrediting Colleges of Podiatric Medicine.

The Committee reviewed the documents related to college evaluation and accreditation began meeting in 2016 and Draft I of the rewrite of CPME publications 120 and 130 was disseminated to the community of interest in December 2017. The Council reviewed all comments received from the community of interest concerning Draft I at their April 2018 meeting and determined that due to the number and nature of the comments received, the Committee would reconvene to address the comments and to provide recommendations to the Council at their October 2018 meeting. The Council reviewed the recommendations made by the Committee and approved Draft II of CPME publications 120 and 130 at their October 2018 meeting.

Per CPME 130, Draft II revisions of CPME publications 120 and 130 will be open for comment for four months. Following a review of the comments from the community of interest, the proposed revisions to CPME 120 and 130 will be considered for final adoption by the Council during its April 2019 meeting.

Click on this link, CPME 120 and 130 Revisions, to view Draft II of the documents for comment. The revised CPME 120 and 130 documents also can be found on the Council’s website at cpme.org by clicking on CPME 120 and 130 Revisions under Podiatric Medical Colleges.
