Yoga is a journey of the self, through the self, to the self

ALL ABOUT BALANCE
WITH ALISON BURKE
Q: You are joining our Advancing Your Yoga series with Arm Balancing this week. Tell us your favorite arm balance and how long it took you to master it.

AB: This changes frequently! Currently, my favorite arm balance to practice is Eka Pada Koundinyasana I (Pose Dedicated to the Sage Koundinya I). I love the deep twist required to get into the posture and the extra challenge of lifting and straightening the back leg.
As for the second half of the question? I'm not sure I've mastered the pose. My body is constantly changing so some days I'm closer than others.

Q: I know Advancing Your Yoga is meant for every level, but if I’m a beginner, what should I expect?

AB: Besides a super fun time, a beginner can expect tons of useful exercises to access and develop the strength required for these arm balances.
We will also grow and layer the poses, so there is a stage of each posture for everyone.

Q: Balance is a constant theme in yoga class. You juggle being an entrepreneur, single motherhood and teaching at least five classes or more per week, what keeps you balanced?

AB: I subscribe to the idea that one "can't pour from an empty cup". I stay balanced by making my health and well-being a priority through daily exercise and yoga, meditation and an overall healthy lifestyle so I can give from the overflow of my cup - that's where the good stuff is!

Q: Best advice you can give to those of us nervous to enroll this weekend?

AB: Fear is a manipulative emotion that can trick us into living a boring life.

JOLIE'S TIP
Arm balancing is for strengthening your body and your focus. A great herb that does this as well is ashwagandha - this translates to 8 stallions.
I use it if I am feeling depleted or am having trouble sleeping and especially when I travel.  It is the best for reducing jet lag. Try taking 1/4 of a dropper each morning especially through fall and winter.
Our new ashwagandha tincture is sourced and made locally with Open Minded Organics.
I am really excited about it!
