Impacted Program: Mexican Avocados

OLE TYME SUMMARY
PRO*ACT’s November 2 edition of The Source+ reported that, “A short harvest labor strike in Mexico will slow imports to the U.S. for the next week or two.” The report went on to say, “Pricing may increase slightly” and that “the primary concern is a temporary shortage of fully ripened product.”

However, the labor strike has continued longer than expected and is currently in its fifth day. As a result, the shortage in avocados is likely to be worse than initially anticipated. Increased demand for avocados will likely also increase pricing. We continue to hope for a resolution to the strike soon in order to avoid worsening conditions in the market. But, once the strike is resolved and harvesting resumes, it will still take time to pack and transport the product. If the strike does not end soon, the industry could be going to averages.
