Program 10: We Heart Canada + Japan 90 Premiere Presentation


In celebration of the 90th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Canada, VAFF is proud to present the world premiere of the “We Heart Canada + Japan 90” project. Four short films will showcase what Canada’s diverse and inclusive communities love about Japan by pairing Vancouver-based independent filmmakers with Vancouver-based non-profit organizations with connections to Japan.

Program 11- Canadian Shorts  

Don't miss one of our most popular screenings at the festival, featuring all local talent both in front of and behind the camera. This screening will also include the winners of the 13th annual Mighty Asian Moviemaking Marathon (MAMM 13).

Program 12 – Drawn Together: Comics, Diversity and Stereotypes 

(Documentary) This documentary follows the journey of three talented artists as they use comics and cartoons to challenge racial, religious, and gender stereotypes and inspire others to breakthrough socially and self-imposed limitations. The film taps into the explosion in the public’s appetite for superhero entertainment to open a deeper and more inclusive social dialogue about identity, respect, and representation.

Closing Night Spotlight: For Izzy


Using documentary-style footage, still photography, poetry, and animation, FOR IZZY is a story about a queer photojournalist recovering from opioid addiction who befriends an autistic woman seeking to break out of her insular life, while their respective single parents find renewed hope in an unexpected romance.

Followed by the VAFF 2018 Festival Awards Presentation and After Party.

Film and After Party admission:  $25
