Panel 1: Diversity and Representation in Canadian Film and Television

Hollywood seems to be finally embracing diversity in the films and tv shows they are producing. What about mainstream media in Canada?

TIME: 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm

Do you need to be a dragon lady to strive in this male-dominant film industry, especially for women of colour? Accomplished women from behind and in front of the camera discuss what it takes to thrive in the industry.

Program 5 – Late Life - The Chien-Ming Wang Story: 1PM

(Documentary, Sports) Late Life: The Chien-Ming Wang Story is a feature length documentary following the latter years of Wang’s professional baseball career. The first and only Taiwanese player for the New York Yankees, Chien-Ming Wang held many titles: American League Wins Leader, World Series Champion, Olympian, Time 100 Most Influential, and The Pride of Taiwan. A poignant account of his life as told by those closest to him, examining his roles as an international player, a father, a son, and a national icon. It is the story of a man who is unwilling to give up and unable to let go.

Program 6 – Badass Beauty Queen: The Story of Anastasia Lin: 3PM

(Documentary/Human Interest) The story behind Miss World contestant Anastasia Lin, using her beauty to stand up for human rights. Follow Anastasia, as she brings the world’s attention to an increasing list of China’s human rights issues, putting everything on line to stay true to her conscience — including her father’s safety — and her chance at the crown.

Program 7 – International Shorts: 5PM


Our International Shorts program on November 3rd brings you films from all around the world, including South Korea, China, India, United States, Malaysia, and Taiwan!

Program 8 – Centrepiece Spotlight: Ulam: Main Dish: 7PM

(Documentary Feature) In this delicious new documentary, Filipino-American filmmaker Alexandra Cuerdo follows the rise of Filipino food via the award-winning chefs crossing over to the center of the American table. ULAM: Main Dish stages this new culinary movement as not only a remarkable achievement for American restaurateurs, but also as a validation of Filipino culture.
 


Preceded by the Disney/Pixar animated Short “Bao” by Domee Shi. 

In “Bao,” an aging Chinese mom suffering from empty nest syndrome gets another chance at motherhood when one of her dumplings springs to life as a lively, giggly dumpling boy.

Program 9: Late Night Features Series: Omotenashi: 9PM

Revolving around a young and cynical entrepreneur’s rediscovery of the value of humility and old-school human relationships in a rundown inn he plans to demolish, "Omotenashi" is a story about love, culture, and the virtue of traditional Japanese hospitality.
