Rice GPS Cake Walk 2018: Have you won a fellowship or major award lately?
The Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies would like to recognize postdocs that were awarded major external fellowships. Which awards are eligible for the Cake Walk? 
• External awards or fellowships (national or international) greater than $2000 that support your research at Rice.
• Honorable mentions or semi-finalists for awards that would provide $2000 or more

The Cake Walk is open to any postdoctoral researcher, domestic or international. The fellowship must be a competition outside of Rice. Awards that are governed by Rice faculty/staff are not eligible. If you fit the criteria please fill out the survey here.
Panel: International Student Employment in the U.S.
Nov. 15, 2018, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
The Rice Center for Career Development will host a panel of experts to answer questions about the internship and job search process for international students and how to make the most of it. Come listen to and engage with a board of panelists including industry recruiters, Rice alumni, as well as CCD and OISS representatives. By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:
  • Discover effective tips and strategies for navigating the U.S. job market
  • Visualize how the process differs from job-hunting in other countries
  • Determine how to maximize your chances of landing a job in the U.S.

Rice Oil & Gas High-Performance Computing Conference

The Ken Kennedy Institute is accepting abstract submissions now through November 28th for the 2019 Rice Oil and Gas High Performance Computing Conference to be held March 4-5, 2019. The HPC conference is the premier meeting place for the industry to engage in conversations about challenges and opportunities in the field. Being sensitive to your valuable time, we have developed short but robust courses — accessible on any device — designed to deliver focused learning that can be applied immediately. STEM graduate students have many non-academic career paths to choose from, but how do they select, explore and pursue their career dreams? NSF Graduate Research Internship Program (GRIP) at the EPA

The National Science Foundation has created the Graduate Research Internship Program (GRIP) for graduate students to complete internships at federal agencies. The NSF and United States Environmental Protection Agency collaboration is designed to encourage, develop, and facilitate collaborative professional development and research opportunities for NSF Graduate Research Fellows (GRF). At EPA, GRIP students can grow professionally with a rewarding research experience and receive mentoring from our researchers, all while focusing on the protection of human health and the environment. DAAD RISE Summer Internship in Germany

The DAAD RISE is currently accepting applications for summer internships in Germany from both undergraduate and graduate students. There are two separate programs, DAAD RISE Germany for undergraduates (research internships) and DAAD RISE Professional for graduate students (professional internships). Their summer 2019 internship database is now open and applications for both programs are due by December 15, 2018. More information.
The 2019 Competition for the iBiology Young Scientist Seminars (YSS)
Deadline: Dec. 17, 2018
The Young Scientist Seminars (YSS) is a video series produced by iBiology that features early-career scientists giving talks about their research and discoveries. Winners will receive a $500 honorarium and an all-expenses-paid trip to the UCSF in Spring 2019 to attend an iBiology and Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science multi-day science communication workshop. The Puentes Consortium Summer Visiting Scholar to Mexico

The Puentes Consortium, a binational consortium of universities from the U.S. and Mexico, made up of the Universidad de las Américas Puebla, the Universidad de Monterrey, the Instituto Technológico de Monterrey, and Rice University, has created a fund to support the exchange of faculty members and Ph.D. students (or equivalent) among the institutions of the consortium. This fund is intended to support an international scholarly visit of up to six (6) research professors and/or doctoral students from member universities. Preference will be given to international scholarly visits, although scholarly visits to member institutions in the same country will be considered. The research visit is to be carried out at one of the universities within the consortium. For more information or to apply visit the website.

Olmos wins SACNAS Outstanding Presentation Award

Rice Biosciences graduate student Jose Olmos won an Outstanding Research Presentation award at the 2018 National Diversity in STEM conference, held annually by the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS).

“It is my honor to share that Jose’s communication skills and command of the research topic were exemplary,” said Kateryna Poradiuk, SACNAS student programs manager, noting “the hard work, dedication, and sacrifice necessary for a student to stand out from their fellow presenters.” Read more.
