100 Year Anniversary of Armistice Day

In Chico we will honor that moment 100 years ago and commemorate Armistice Day at the Peace Vigil on Saturday, November 10. We'll meet at noon at the corner of 3rd and Main. As is tradition, we will observe 2 minutes of silence and the ringing of bells. We will then walk through town, around the farmers market and return to 3rd and Main to observe the Vigil from 12:30 to 1:30. We'll have paper poppies to hand out to passers-by and people along the way.

Bring bells and rhythm instruments! Please join us, invite your friends and family, and spread the word.

November 11, 2018, is the 100 year anniversary of Armistice Day, the end of World War 1, the bloodiest war the world had ever known when over 20 million people died. On November 11, 1918, at 11:00 am Armistice was called, soldiers laid down their arms, and the terrible war was over.

A brief history of Armistice Day, World War One was one of the deadliest conflicts in the history of the human race, in which over 16 million people died. The total number of both civilian and military casualties is estimated at around 37 million people. The war killed almost 7 million civilians and 10 million military personnel. Starting in South Africa in April 1919 and spread to England, people observe a one or more commonly a two-minute moment of silence at 11:00 a.m. local time. It is a sign of respect for, in the first minute, the roughly 20 million people who died in the war, and in the second minute dedicated to the living left behind, generally understood to be wives, children, and families left behind but deeply affected by the conflict.

Red and white poppies. Scarlet corn poppies grow naturally in conditions of the disturbed earth throughout Western Europe. The destruction brought by the Napoleonic wars of the early 19th century transformed the bare land into fields of blood red poppies, growing around the bodies of the fallen soldiers.

In late 1914, the fields of Northern France and Flanders were once again ripped open as World War One raged through Europe's heart. Once the conflict was over the poppy was one of the only plants to grow on the otherwise barren battlefields.

The significance of the poppy as a lasting memorial symbol to the fallen was realized by the Canadian surgeon John McCrae in his poem In Flanders Fields. The red poppy came to represent the immeasurable sacrifice made by his comrades and quickly became a lasting memorial to those who died in World War One and later conflicts. The White Poppy was first introduced by the Women's Co-operative Guild in 1933 and was intended as a lasting symbol for peace and an end to all wars.

Chico Peace Vigil

The Chico Peace Vigil was the start of the Chico Peace & Justice Center. The Chico Peace Vigil traces its history back to the tense Cold War years of the early 1960s. Chico resident Wilhelmina Taggart, alarmed by this development, made weekly visits to the base to pray. Eventually, the missiles were removed, but by then Willa was joined by Florence McLane and Helen Kinnee. Together they started what they called the Chico Peace Endeavor, and began holding a weekly peace vigil in downtown Chico. Fifty years later, the vigil still takes place.

Events & Updates

Good news!

During the month of November, CPJC will be the featured partner organization for Chico Naturals Round Up program. For more than 40 years, the Chico Natural Foods Cooperative has been giving back to our community. In 2017 it introduced Register Round Up: a new way for customers to participate in this commitment. This simple yet powerful community giving program allows customers to “round-up”their grocery bill for recipient organizations that share our commitment to a healthy community.

This is how it works.  The Front End clerks at the Co-op will ask if you would like to round each transaction up to the next even dollar. The difference between the original purchase and the rounded up amount will be donated to CPJC. For example, if a purchase is $9.75, a Co-op clerk will ask if you would like to round up to $10.00. The remaining $0.25  will be donated to CPJC. These small donations can add up! This month, we encourage all our supporters to swing by Chico Natural and “round-up” for CPJC.

Act & Vote with Conscience Community Potluck

Join the Phillips family and the Justice 4 Desmond Phillips Team for a community potluck in downtown plaza in Chico. It is election time which means it is critical to consider who you are voting for and where they stand on issues like police brutality, racism, and mental healthcare access. Who will hold police accountable? Who will push for policy that will actually make our community safer, not just scapegoat the most vulnerable among us?

In the spirit of Desmond's love for all people, especially our unhoused neighbors, we will be hosting a community potluck and discussion about these issues. In the spirit of so many great change-makers who have come before us, we also know that it is critical that we do more than just vote. We must act in our daily lives and as community organizers to create grassroots change for a safer and more inclusive community.

Bring a dish to share if you can. Bring a chair if you need it. Bring your heart and your conscience. Bring your passion for #Justice4Desmond
