On October 26, 2018, Matthew Shepard's remains were laid to rest at Washington National Cathedral. This weekend, we celebrate Matthew's life, we mourn his death, and offer a message of love, hope, and acceptance.
“I very much wanted Matt's voice to be heard, even if in a small way, and to include a few musical snapshots of his strong life force.”
–Craig Hella Johnson
Hella Johnson's moving oratorio recounts the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay college student in Laramie, Wyoming. The piece weaves together a vast range of musical styles to reflect the universality of this story. The UCONN Chamber Singers, conducted by Jamie Spillane, will join CONCORA to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of Matthew's death.
As the first concert in our new Music with a
Mission initiative, in which CONCORA gives back to other non-profit entities, proceeds from each performance will go to support LGBTQ organizations in the local community. Jamie Spillane will conduct all three performances, with Chris Shepard at the piano.
