What is Head Racing? In the Fall the races are called Head Races: In this style race, competitors begin the course staggered, and compete for the best time. Therefore, you cannot determine the winner simply by watching the race. However, when a crew with a higher bow number is overtaking a crew with a lower bow number you know they are doing well! These races are approximately 3 miles.

The NAC Outrigger Program sent two coaches to the LA84 Foundation Summit. In one-on-one interviews, panel discussions and power talks; speakers from across the country will discuss topics such as the impact athlete activists can have, P.E. as a social justice issue, how to ensure sports are safe for kids, and much more. Both coaches learned key coaching strategies and participated in thought provoking panels with key speakers. They are looking forward to applying what they learned to their program.

The Newport Aquatic Center master’s women (WOW) headed north to Marina del Ray the first weekend of November to participate in Head of the Marina regatta. The course was out and back with a sharp turn and its fair share of marina obstacles (power boats, fishing boats, paddlers, buoys…all the good stuff). The team raced two eights and three quads. The eight composed of Amy, Colleen, Annie, YaYa, Barb, Solo, Tami, and Michelle and coxed by Coach Carrie placed first with some good hustle, beating crews from LBRA and LARC. The eight composed of Rhonda, Kay, Trish, Karen, Kathy, Mary, Maggie, and Annette and coxed by Coach Tory dug deep to hold off a LARC crew through the finish line. Both crews said they enjoyed being coxed by their coaches, despite the many, (many, many, many) years it had been since either of them coxed.
Many team members immediately jumped into sculling boats right after docking from eights race. The first quad of Carrie, Colleen, Michelle, and Tory blazed down the course at 34spm to clinch the win. The second quad of Annie, YaYa, Tami, and Amy persevered for second place even though they were almost swamped by not one by TWO fishing boats (who at least cheered for them…). WOW’s senior masters quad composed of Dennie, Barb, Maggie, and Kathy also pulled off a W despite issues with an oar handle coming loose during the race!
