The Clarion Ledger's Higgins writes on Ole Miss moving forward now that its FB appeals process is complete. Rebels AD Bjork: "As frustrated and as disappointed as we are that all these things happened we have to look at this as a new day. We can finally go out and do what we’re supposed to do. Recruit, build our program, help our student-athletes progress, promote our university through athletics and make sure the right resources are in place. That’s our day job and we’ve been distracted from that. Now, we can get back to the fundamentals of athletics." Here are the "layers of enhancement" Bjork points to that will ensure such violations do not occur again: Restructuring of the compliance office, more monitoring of official visits & ACT tests, increased vetting of coaching candidates, increased rules education/accountability & establishing a culture of integrity. More Bjork: "I’ve learned to keep both eyes open all the time. You want to believe your people, but you have to double and triple check. Now we know how a high-level (NCAA investigative) case works. There are some things we’ll do differently moving forward." (link)
Some of you may have already seen this, but others maybe not as the NCAA sent out a infographic of sorts on how the new hoops NET system works. Reviews the areas of the team value index, net efficiency, winning percentage, adjusted winning percentage & scoring margin. Net efficiency is offensive efficiency minus defense efficiency ratings. Adjusted winning percentage awards +1.4 value for a road win, +1.0 for an a natural site dub & +0.6 for a home win. On the other side, -0.6 for a road loss, -1.0 for a neutral site loss & -1.4 for a home loss. Remember, an OT win only counts as +1 for scoring margin. A bit more. (link)
I received some interesting feedback on hoops headliner Davis' proposals to revamp the NCAA model to benefit student-athletes, schools & the game alike. Here's a profile of Davis from SBJ on his bi-coastal lifestyle (LA & NYC) during the season as he usually flies west to east on a Wednesday night red-eye. A normal Saturday in the CBS studios from 10a to past midnight with multiple on-camera hits. During the off-season, Davis can be found carting his three kids around Los Angeles for various sporting events & school projects, while constantly working out of his car. (link)
Yahoo's Thamel with 10 takeaways from yesterday's FB action include the reality that New York & Boston will be the epicenter of the sport for the next two weekends with Clemson @ Boston College & Notre Dame-Syracuse in Yankee Stadium having major implications on the CFP. Michigan is surging, UTEP wins, Washington State still only has one loss, biggest "onions" goes to West Virginia HC Holgorsen & then there's this from AAC Commish Aresco on UCF's drum beat, "I think we have a chance to get there. A lot of things can happen in the top 10. If UCF goes undefeated – and that’s a big if – …. it’s possible. I don’t care who you’re playing. It’s hard to win 21 straight games." (link); USA Today's Wolken actually goes with 11, though there are some overlaps with Thamel. Wolken worries Big 12 squads could beat up on each other too much to make a dent in the CFP, also asks why ESPN allowed political commentator Carville on GameDay when all parties should have known he'd knock the SEC for perceived bias against LSU. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
The aforementioned Clemson @ Boston College kick next weekend will be the site of ESPN College GameDay. The show hasn't visited The Heights since 2009. Eagles AD Jarmond: "This is the biggest game we’ll host in 10 years. Our campus will be electric. The energy with this team and our fans is real." (link)

Mississippi State AD Cohen offers perspective on the coming renovation to Humphrey Coliseum, notes it as a project he's been working on since he became the boss in Starkville. Cohen: "Our goal is to create a more modern concourse with the new amenities we have. Our goal at this point is to have a full-scale store that is there to sell Mississippi State gear, not just on gamedays but all year long. We have discussed the feasibility and the possibility of having a restaurant on the concourse that's available all year round, not just on gamedays. Our entry ways in the facility are very important to us, we want to make a statement in that way as well." Timeline wise, construction could start after this hoops season & stretch through the 2019-20 campaign. Cohen thinks everything can start in a "reasonable amount of time" given his fundraising projections. (link)
WaPo's Stubbs & Siddiqui get feedback from Maryland students on how the last couple of weeks has felt on the College Park campus. Freshman Goldberg: "I think people are just exasperated," Fellow freshman Donahue: "I was getting CNN alerts the other day. [...] My friends have been texting me." Longtime FB season ticket-holder Murphy, who flies in from Chicago for every home game, "Like you’ve cleansed it a little bit. But you still have work to do. I think people recognize that Maryland is larger than any one individual. And all of us have this deeply held belief that if we could ever get folks on the same page, you can win here." (link); WaPo's Svrluga thinks Interim HC Canada has handled the situation admirably. Svrluga: "This is so hard, all of it. You don’t realize it when you’re in college, but man, what a fleeting time. And for these kids, a full year of it has been wrecked not just because one of their teammates died but because the people charged with leading them were, depending on the particular character in question, cruel and insensitive, petty and divisive, incompetent and immoral — or some combination therein." More. (link)
A Waco Tribune Herald editorial asks, "Is the Big 12 Conference prepared to pursue this role with consistency, fairness and rigid oversight?" in connection to the penalties handed down at Baylor as part of the Pepper Hamilton investigation. Of note, "If one accepts the Big 12’s imposing a $2 million fine on Baylor for supposedly tarnishing the conference’s reputation, what then is the reason behind also withholding more than $10 million in financial distributions owed Baylor for four long years (and who knows if this wobbly athletic conference will even survive that long)? Neither the Big 12 investigation nor Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby’s comments this week adequately explain this or even fully acknowledge the Big 12’s unprecedented action." More. (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz with his weekly bonus updates: Fresno State's Tedford gets $50K for the Bulldogs 8th win of the year, up to $300K overall on the season. Cincinnati's Fickell gets $10K for the Bearcats' 8th win and UAB's Clark with $5K for W #8. Boise State's Harsin pockets $10K for beating BYU, specifically. Alabama HC Saban gets $75K for clinching the SEC West while Georgia's Smart trumps that with $100K for securing the SEC East. Mississippi State's Moorhead gets $50K, App State's Satterfield ($25K), NC State's Doeren ($25K), Northern Illinois' Carey ($25K), Auburn's Malzahn ($50K), Middle Tennessee's Stockstill ($60,142) and Michigan State's Dantonio ($75K) for bowl eligibility. Former Coastal Carolina FB student-athlete Norman donates the largest gift ever given to the school by a former Chanticleer and CCU has named the athletics field house at Brooks Stadium the Marrio and Josh Norman Field House, a tribute to he and his brother who also played FB in Conway. Most of Norman's gift is designated for the stadium expansion, but some will also provide financial support for walk-on FB student-athletes and CCU's communication and theater programs. Norman: "You can never put a dollar amount on someone's personal influence on your path in life. I am beyond grateful for my experience at Coastal Carolina University. For my two brothers and I who passed through these halls, may our voices be heard from a time long ago as we watch the evolution of CCU as a growing titan." (linklink)
Memphis raised a record $8.16M in scholarship support in FY18 as an all-time high of more than 4,000 donors contributed to the Tiger Scholarship Fund. In the past five years, the M Club - the Tigers' former letter winners association - has grown from 129 members to 721. AD Bowen: "This past year's success is a credit to our generous and loyal donors, the outstanding work of our staff and the incredible effort of our talented coaches who recruit quality student-athletes that our alumni and fans are proud to support. Memphis is home to some of the most passionate fans in college athletics and they once again have shown their commitment in supporting all 400 of our talented student-athletes." (link)
Not surprisingly, UMBC MBB's success this past March is making it easier for HC Odom to get in the door with recruits. "Certainly when we reach out to folks now, high school coaches, AAU coaches, even prospects, I mean you don't have to explain where you're located. They know the history. The know what happened, and so that gets you in the door." The success also means better quality non-conference opponents, which Odom deems a "positive thing. We want to challenge ourselves like we do every year. If we're fortunate enough to make the NCAA tournament, we're going play high-level teams. You're going face a team like that in the first round." A 22% increase in attendance year-over-year at an event for HS juniors in April is part of the aftereffects, as well. (link)
Also Noticed: Air Force's live mascot, the 22-year-old white gyrfalcon named Aurora, suffered potentially life-threatening injuries after being taken from an Army colonel's home as part of an Air Force-Army prank by West Point cadets. (link); Twitter wars between FIU and FAU, with the Owls' Football twitter account bragging of the school's proximity to the beach and the Panthers replying #LosingInParadise. Wow. (link); Amazon has held advanced discussions about the possibility of opening its second HQ in Crystal City, a Northern Virginia suburb. Interesting for college athletics in so much as the massive project potentially attracting/recruiting more families to the DC area that could impact protective student-athlete talent. (link)
