A Message From our President
My friends, our community has experienced a devastating disaster. The Camp Fire has all but erased what was beautiful Paradise. And then the danger of flash floods and debris flows with the rain! But, out of catastrophe comes compassion, kindness and generosity. The out pouring of support from Soroptimist clubs all over the world is so inspiring. I want to extend an emphatic thank you to SIBR club member Traci Williams for volunteering to chair our new committee focusing on Camp Fire recovery. The committee has already met and begun brainstorming for the best way to assist our neighbors in returning to a sense of normalcy. This will take years. And we will be there every step of the way!
Speaking of normalcy, it will be so nice to hang out with you all at our annual holiday party December 11th. Thanks so much, Sherry Holbrook, for hosting again! If you are planning on donating to the food drive, you are welcome to bring those goods to the party for Yvette Sanfilippo to collect. And, I’m looking forward to the Santa Project on December 13th at the Dorothy Johnson Center. Once of my most favorite projects! Oh, and we’re ringing the Salvation Army bell at Save Mart on December 8th from 10 am to 6 pm. Additional info can be found on the SIBR calendar on the website. Even if you didn’t sign up, you can still come hang out.
Just a quick reminder that our January meetings are pushed back a week due to the fact that New Year’s Day is on the first Tuesday of the month. So, our business meeting will be held on the third Tuesday and the speaker meeting on the fifth Tuesday.
Be safe all and take care.
In the Soroptimist spirit,
Angie Little

I am a Soroptimist. Born and raised in Oakdale, California, I was president of our S-Club and headed off to CSUC in 1974 with a Soroptimist Scholarship. I lived in the French and Spanish Language Houses on 3rd Street, and worked at the AS Bookstore during the day, around classes. I received my BA in Latin American Studies, minor in Spanish, in 1980. I worked summers of 1977 and 1978 as a peer advisor for CSUC’s new student orientation, where I met, and in 1980 married, my college sweetheart, who I also worked with while I was a waitress at Jake’s. My sweetheart/husband’s grandmother was a member of the SI Alameda club, in Founders Region, so of course I was never too far from my Soroptimist roots.
I graduated on a Saturday, and the following Monday embarked on a 10 year career with the company which owned the Sandpiper Restaurant, as corporate Human Resources Director and a Restaurant Consultant, opening turn-key restaurants. During this time I returned to CSUC and earned a Life Community College Teaching Credential in Food, Food Service & Related Technologies, was coordinator and taught for Butte College’s Food Service program, and was a moderator/lecturer for a fall class at UC Berkeley Extension in San Francisco, in conjunction with California Restaurant Association. I joined SI Chico in 1981, but was only a member for a couple of years due to the attendance, and other strict membership requirements.
In 1990 I married my husband, Matt, we created our family. with son Conor, and daughter Emma, and my business, Big Chico Creek Resources. The core of my work was restaurant management consulting, and I was an Independent Administrative Law Hearing Representative for 13 national companies in Northern California. Over the years BCCR has evolved to be more marketing and event planning for nonprofits such as Chico Concours d’Elegance, North State Symphony, Patrick Ranch Museum and Oroville Chamber of Commerce.
On a whim, in 1995 I began my 15 year career in radio (through 3 ownerships). My position was challenging, and outrageously fun, as the Marketing Director for a station group with 5 formats, in 2 languages. Of course I rejoined SI Chico in 1996, and held many offices, including serving as President 2010/2011, and in my final year I was the SIC’s Recording Secretary.
I decided to step up my Soroptimist game when I turned 60 a couple of years ago, and served on Sierra Nevada’s region board as the chair of the Strategic Planning Committee. Since SI Chico was the largest club in all of SIA the year I was president (130 members) I felt it appropriate to broaden my horizons and see how smaller clubs work, and being no stranger to change, joined SIBR in 2016/2017. While the mission and programs were familiar, the structure and approach were different; obviously it has to be, based on the membership. SIBR has been the perfect fit for me, as I’ve made deeply sincere new friendships, rekindled old ones, and as it turned out, SIBR produces leaders on the Sierra Nevada Region and SIA Federation levels, and I’m honored to be representing our 10 clubs in SNR’s District 1 as Director 2018/2020 Biennium. Every day, as far back as I can remember, has been a great day to be a Soroptimist!

Soroptimist Orientation and Leadership Training

Dream it, Be it – Career Support for Girls
Soroptimist’s global program for girls – Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls – targets girls in secondary school who face obstacles to their future success. It provides girls with access to professional role models, career education and resources to live their dreams. Career support includes help and assistance to pursue an occupation that will offer opportunities for long-term success. Although we don’t think all girls will know what they want to do for the rest of their lives, the skills they learn in Dream It, Be It will help them regardless of the career they choose to pursue or when they choose to pursue it.
Program Goal: Through education and access to role models, girls will be empowered to pursue their career goals and reach their full potential.
Objectives:
To Increase the Number of Girls Who:
1. Feel prepared to pursue their career goals.
2. Feel comfortable creating achievable goals.
3. Have tools to overcome obstacles to success.
4. Understand the importance of resilience.
5. Can connect personal values with possible careers.
6. Feel more confident about their future success.
7. Have professional role models.
Topics We Cover
- Career opportunities
- Setting and achieving goals
- Overcoming obstacles to success
- Moving forward after setbacks or failures
There When It Matters Most
By reaching girls while they are still young, we not only can help them stay healthy and safe in the short term, but we can reduce the number of women in crisis in the future. Putting them on a path will help them realize their dreams.
