Graphic supports case for greater learning disabilities investment

A graphic developed during an CLAHRC EM project is helping to make the case for more funding into learning disabilities to NHS England. Read more.

Increasing medication and ensuring people take their treatment properly could help prevent thousands of heart attacks and cardiovascular-related deaths, according to research. Read more.

East Midlands Academic Health Science Network project wins award

A test supported by CLAHRC EM which is proven to speed up the diagnosis of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and save NHS money has won a highly-prestigious award. Read more

CLAHRC EM researchers act as consultants on a new physically active learning campaign called Super Movers - a partnership between the BBC and the Premier League. Read more.

Lincolnshire consultant reveals Grantham ADHD success story

A Grantham doctor called for the national adoption of a test proven to speed up diagnosis of ADHD as part of an awareness campaign. We have been involved in the research to test out the technique. Read more.

Nottinghamshire physiotherapy first point of contact scheme goes nationwide

An initiative piloted in Nottinghamshire to introduce a physiotherapy as a first point of contact service for people with musculoskeletal complaints is to be rolled out across the country.

Congratulations to our PhD researchers
A wave of CLAHRC EM researchers have been awarded their PhD over the summer and autumn.

In October, we congratulated Dr Claudio Di Lorito for passing his PhD Viva. Claudio’s PhD was on The mental health needs of older patients and older patients with cognitive impairment/dementia living in secure forensic psychiatric settings.

We also congratulated Dr Amanda King for passing her viva and being awarded her PhD, titled Rehabilitation for Outdoor Activity and Mobility in Care Homes: The ROAM study, details of which can be accessed here.

Also, this year Dr Sarah Brand passed her viva and was awarded her PhD, titled Understanding and improving continuity of care for people living with Chronic Kidney Disease – an exploratory qualitative study.

In the summer, Dr Kevin Anthony also successfully defended his thesis and earned his PhD, titled An intervention to increase Older People’s Rehabilitative Exercise Engagement.

Meanwhile, it was announced that Dr Oli Williams, fellow CLAHRC EM researcher, was awarded a three-year post-doctoral fellowship by The Healthcare Improvement Studies Institute.

PhD/MD bursary winners!
During 2017/18, we awarded 12 travel/research prizes to PhD/MD students linked to CLAHRC EM.

Successful applicants won up to £500 to cover the cost of attendance at a conference (where a paper or poster was presented) or for research data collection costs. 

Our winners included:

Jess presents at international event

Jessica Beaver was able to attend 33rd Alzheimer’s Disease International Conference in Chicago in July after winning one of our PhD bursary prizes earlier this year. 

The researcher, pictured in the middle, gave a talk about her PhD into older people in hospital who ‘call out’ repetitively.

Yogini presents at European event 

Yogini Chudasama presented a summary of her research at the 53rd Annual Meeting of the European Diabetes Epidemiology Group staged in Denmark in April. 

On day three, Yogini gave an oral presentation in the session ‘Impact of Health of Ageing and Diabetes’ on the subject of ‘(Cardio-metabolic) multimorbidity, physical activity and life expectancy’.
