A Message from the Executive Director

Dear Friends of Water Science,

I want to take this space to announce an important new opportunity for CUAHSI.  We learned in late October that we have been awarded a major grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation to support further development of the Internet of Water (IoW). The $2M, three-year grant will be shared among the Duke University Nicholas Institute, the Water Data Exchange (WaDE) program of the Western States Water Council, and CUAHSI.

The IoW is both a vision and an organization. The vision is to connect fragmented water data through a federated backbone network of data producers, hubs, and users. The organization, to be housed initially at the Nicholas Institute, will help enable the IoW vision. With initial support from the Water Funder Initiative, the Nicholas Institute has been engaged in planning, start-up, and backbone implementation for 2018-2020, and currently is searching for an Executive Director.

The Aspen Institute report identified WaDE and CUAHSI as key data hubs. Hubs are seen as the primary connectors of water data producers and data users and are the gateway to discovering and accessing diverse water-related data. The Moore Foundation grant will help solidify the roles of WaDE and CUAHSI as key water data hubs. Specifically, CUAHSI and WaDE will work with the IoW organization and with state and local governments to help make sensor data discoverable and accessible, will build new connections with Federal water data producers, will help define best practices for establishing future connections between hubs and data producers, and will provide leadership in developing use cases for IoW data.

WaDE has been an important CUAHSI partner over the last couple of years, so we are excited about a more formal relationship with them, as well as with the IoW organization and the Nicholas Institute.  Please let me know if you have any thoughts or questions about this new activity.

Interested in learning more about CUAHSI's data services? CUAHSI will be at the AGU Fall Meeting next month. Stop by the booth for more information and make sure you sign up for the CUAHSI-AGU Hydrology Business Meeting and Reception on Tuesday, December 11. We hope to see you there!

All the best,
Jerad

Meet the CUAHSI Community

This is the next installment of our series as we shine the spotlight on a member of the CUAHSI community.

[Know a CUAHSI member that deserves to be highlighted? Contact commgr@cuahsi.org with a nomination!]

This month’s Meet the CUAHSI Community introduces you to one of CUAHSI's very own, Liza Brazil!

What is your role with CUAHSI?
As the Product Manager at CUAHSI, I wear many hats. I am responsible for supporting all aspects of the User Experience for CUAHSI data services and tools, including documentation and user support. I interact with our users in many ways through answering and delegating support questions, leading interactive workshops at universities and conferences, and conducting user testing on all new product functionality. I work directly with our Development and User Experience team to define product roadmaps and strategy, and ultimately to ensure that our products meet user needs.

How long have you worked with CUAHSI?
I have worked at CUAHSI for just over three years. Currently, I am working with our newest UX/UI Developer, Hongzhen Zhang. I also engage our valuable User Committee Members to improve the user experience of HydroShare. Our current focus is on how our users interpret the data privacy and sharing settings that HydroShare provides, and on the workflow to publish data and obtain a DOI for data on HydroShare.

How would you describe CUAHSI?
One word, engaging.

What book are you currently reading?
"Where We Belong" by Emily Giffin

What are you watching right now on TV?
"The Deuce" on HBO

What is your favorite place you've visited?
New Zealand

Fun Fact!
The first time I visited Boston was for the CUAHSI interview. I accepted the position and moved up here knowing one other person. Now, I live like a local in the freezing cold and eat slimy oysters!
