Stiperstones and Walk leader Training
23/11 - 24/11

Walk leader training 23/11
18:00-20:00

The Walk Leader Training is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about how we plan and lead walks, so you can have a chance to do it too! For years, members of our society have been taking advantage of this training and because of it can safely plan and lead walks, for the Wayfarers as well as outside of the society, in their own time.

We will teach you all about; how to read a map, walk on a bearing, plan a walk, basic outdoor first aid, and how to lead a walk.

The theory session will teach you all that you need to know before you head out onto the hills to put it into practice!

Please come along to one of the sign-up sessions if you would like to become a walk leader!!

Once again the Wayfarers are taking a trip to the Lake District. This is an area that we visit every term and it is always a really popular weekend.

The Lake District is in Cumbria, North West England, and it's famous for lakes (obviously) and mountains, which the Wayfarers will be going up.  It's also famous for its association with William Wordsworth, a poet, and Beatrix Potter, a writer and illustrator.  An area of outstanding beauty, it's an essential visit for all hikers.

Wilderness Society Trip

I'm Becca, the president of the Birmingham Wilderness Medicine Society. We have planned a wilderness weekend away in the Lake District on the 16th-18th November and wanted to offer you and your members the chance to join us on the trip. Tickets cost £78 and include transport and full board hostel stay.

Our plans for the weekend include walking on both days in the area around Derwentwater and Cat Bells and we have a number of wilderness themed stations tailored to group ability ranging from packing a first aid kit to more challenging scenarios such as planning for and responding to hillside emergencies.

This is always a hugely successful weekend and could also contribute towards quality mountain days for members who are completing the mountain leader award.

This is not a Wayfarers event but anyone who fancies it, go ahead!!

Brecon Beacons Trip Report

Last week, 18 Wayfarers drove to Brecon Beacons for a nice weekend of hiking. After a long drive with several delays, we arrived at Godre Pentre, the classic cute caving club house in Ystradfellte. It was as cosy and clean as it always has been. The first walk on Saturday was to the summit of Pen-y-Fan. The weather was nice, apart from a strange Godly cloud on top of the mountain. As the altitude rose, the temperature dropped. There was a freezing wind, which even brought a bit of snow and fine hail up in our faces. Later when the wind was gone everything became more pleasant again, so that the wonderful landscape could be enjoyed. On top of Pen-y-Fan we could treat us with the view of a new plaque, as pointed out by a Wayfarer of 43 years ago. On Sunday we visited the many waterfalls present close to our accommodation. Although water itself is a pretty dull everyday thing, these natural phenomena are quite exciting. It was not always easy to reach, but fun. And beautiful.
If you have any interesting hiking experiences or some nice pictures, please feel free to send them to us. Then the happiness can be shared in the weekly!
Sign ups
To come to a walk, you need to sign up. Sometimes this can be done online, but often (especially when payments are needed) you need to come to one of our sign up sessions in the Guild of Students, as listed in the right-hand column of the Weekly. If you can't come to a signup, you can send someone else. Every person can sign up for one place.
If the limited places on the trip are taken, you can be put on the reserve list. If someone drops out, the people on the reserve list are contacted in order of signing up. Unless it's a last-minute drop out, then everybody will be contacted at the same time and the first person who replies gets the place.
If you drop out, you will only get refunded if your place can be taken by a reserve candidate.

Membership
For all our walks you will need to become a member of the Wayfarers. We are one of the cheapest sports societies with membership for the year being only 9 pounds, which gives you access to all of our trips and social events throughout the year!

You can become a member of the Wayfarers through our website, the link to our website can be found at the bottom of this email. Click on the 'Become a member' button, follow the instructions and hey presto you're a Wayfarer!
Lots of love!
