Veterans Day
While WWI officially ended on June 28, 1919, the actually fighting had ended several months earlier with the Armistice, which went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. In 1954, Armistice Day was officially changed to Veterans Day to honor all U.S. veterans.
In Aberdeen, there are roughly 19,000 veterans and in total, there are roughly 22 million living vets in the U.S. When you notice an individual in their uniform, or with a ballcap that represents their time serving, be sure to thank them for their service. Better yet, take the time to sit down with a veteran, get to know them, and ask them about serving their country.
On that note, you are cordially invited to attend the Veteran's Day Ceremony taking place on November 11th, beginning at 11:00 a.m. The Ceremony will be held in Veteran's Memorial Park, located by the Aberdeen Library and Main Fire Station. We hope to see our community attend, and show support for our veterans.

F.O.G.'s
Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, families hold large dinners. Indulge in the turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, and gravy. . . but be careful when cleaning up.  Your sewer system is designed to handle normal waste discharge. When fats, oils, and grease (FOG’s) are poured down the sink, they cool and build up on the  interior walls of your pipes. This can ruin your pipes, cause blockage, and a sewer backup in your home. Unless you want to deal with an expensive cleanup/fix, be sure to dispose of FOG’s properly.
What item’s are considered to be FOG’s? Typically, they are items such as butter, cooking oil, grease, food scraps, lard, margarine, meat scraps, and shortening. Holiday foods like gravy would be in this category.
How do you safely dispose of these? Always scrape plates into the trashcan before sitting them in the sink. Not only will this save your pipes, but you won’t have to touch old food when washing your dishes. If you have grease from a frying pan, wait until it solidifies and wipe it in the trashcan or pour it into an old coffee can. Once the can is full, place it in your trashcan.
Not sure if your item is a FOG? When it doubt… just throw it out! Your wallet will thank you.
