Notes on film and the business of creative work.

Why you'll never run out of ideas

When I first started this newsletter, a friend asked me if I would be able to keep it going every week or if I would run out of ideas. 43 weeks in and I have a list of potential topics that keeps growing.

In my experience, the more we create and invest ourselves in something, the more ideas we have. This is because creativity is generative. Ideas and action lead to more ideas and action. We see the world around us differently with each new idea and that fresh perspective is itself inspiring.

Pro Tip: If you're ever stuck and can't come up with the perfect idea, try coming up with 10 imperfect ideas instead. The problem is most likely less about potential and more about being hung up on perfection. Pushing beyond your goal forces you to think more broadly and be open to new possibilities. And once you start the idea process rolling, you'll only gain momentum.

Below are three great film links to spark ideas this week!

Worth checking out this week:

+ Harry Potter: What Magic Sounds Like — Evan Puschak explores how the experience of magic is crafted using sound design and how it evolved over the film series. "People understand what they see, but they feel what they hear."

+ 'Wallace and Gromit' Animation Studio is Now Employee-owned — Aardman Animation has taken a big move to ensure their indie production company doesn't get gobbled up by another massive international conglomerate.

+ Anatomy of a Scene: The Front Runner — Director Jason Reitman breaks down the opening shot of his new film and talks about only using equipment and techniques available in the 80s to create a film that feels tied to that era.
