Hey, <<First Name>>!

I pride myself on my ability to get out of my comfort zone.

In college, I jumped into new experiences constantly: auditioning for an improv group, online dating like it was my job, and diving a little too headfirst into NYC's underground party scene. While I love the thrill of pushing my boundaries, many of those experiences didn't make me happy. Some even made me unsafe.

At this point in my life, I won't do anything for the story. Instead, I want any edgy experience to be centered around love for myself. Invitation to a naked dance class that challenges me to embrace my body? I'm scared, and totally there. But a party that starts at 2 AM in a BDSM dungeon? Personally, I'm out. (Not to yuck anyone's yum.)

To go a little deeper, I fear that my love for "challenging myself" stems from a belief that I am not good enough, and cannot sit still long enough to appreciate the simple things. It's something that I'm working on.

Do you relate, <<First Name>>? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Anywho, time for what you're here for... the GIF and the fun things! Take it away, me trying to wake up after six hours of sleep:
Okay, okay. Two more things. Real quick!

Bring Your Film

Made a film under ten minutes that you want other people to see? This is your place! Come watch new work and eat free popcorn with your fellow filmmakers!

Free. 7:30 PM. Shoestring Studio 640 Classon Ave. Info here.

Shake Your Soul

Dancing makes me feel freakin' alive. But following complicated choreography is intimidating. That's why this dance class has attendees follow simple, repetitive movements that allow you to get into a flow state. Afterwards, make sure to strike up a conversation with your new dance friends!

Donation-based. 6:30 to 8 PM. Gibney Dance, 280 Broadway. Info here.

Tuesday, November 20

Dance Lair

There's no better way to start the day than with a dance party. So let's boogie together! If you can't make it on Tuesday, this is happening every freakin' day this week. And if you can't make it to Bushwick, dance with us in your bedroom via the magic of Facebook live!

Donations welcome. 10 AM to 12 PM. Chanda Lair, Arian Place and Broadway. Info here.

Fuck You Revue

If you have a pal visiting from out of town, this is pretty much the most Brooklyn-tastic thing that you can show them. You'll see nudity, watch human bodies do stuff that they probably shouldn't, and make friends with the types of folks who can hang out at 11 PM on a Tuesday night. It's a good time-- and not for the faint of heart.

$10. No one turned away for lack of funds. 9:30 PM. Bizarre, 12 Bushwick St. Info here.

Wednesday, November 21

SoFar Sounds

This is pretty much a foolproof date night. SoFar Sounds are concerts in people's homes and quirky locations throughout NYC. You have no idea who will be performing until you get there, which always results in some great surprises. The last time I went, I became friends with a group of wonderful women in their sixties who'd been friends since they were ten. Shoutout to Doris and the gang!

$20 per person. Multiple locations. Info here.

You Had to Be There

I haven't been to this dance party before, but I am here for anything that makes the crowd put their phones away. Hooray for uninterrupted human connection!

Free. 9 PM to 3 AM. Schimanski, 54 N 11th St. Info here.

Thursday, November 22

Thanksgiving Yoga and Community Brunch

Start your Thanksgiving off right, with some mindful movement and some great humans. Might as well prepare yourself for the tense conversations later in the day, amirite?!

Pop Gym MMA

Come learn martial arts... for free! This is a space that's safe, holistic, and body-positive. Trans, gender non-conforming, and non-binary folks are welcome, and have their own space to practice from 7 to 8:15 PM. The general class is from 8:15 to 9:30 PM.

Free. 7:00-8:15: Women/Trans/GNC/NB Class 8:15-9:30 General Class. The Spectrum, 1022 Wyckoff Ave. Info here.

Dirty Thursday

Come dance off that meal and those awkward conversations with your aunt. House of Yes is open, and free all freakin' night long!

Wake Up New York

I haven't been to Wake Up New York yet, but the event means so much to a ton of my friends. Head over for an evening of meditation and reflection, inspired by the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh. This event is for folks 35 and under.

Free. 8 to 11 PM. Still Mind Zendo, 37 West 17th St. Info here.

5Rhythms: Night Waves

5Rhythms has become part of my spiritual practice. It's legitimately one of the safest, most welcoming dance environments I've been lucky enough to experience in NYC. If you're interested, there's also an earlier Dancing with Dementia class!

$20 cash. 7:30 to 9:30 PM. Joffrey Ballet School, 434 6th Ave. Info here.

Saturday, November 24

5 Elements Tantric Touch

The wonderful Rachel Santos is hosting another workshop! This time around, learn how to give and receive different types of touch, as well as communicate your boundaries. And if you're shy, no worries–– this workshop is fully clothed!

$35. 3 to 6 PM X Marks the Loft, 405 Johnson Ave. Info here.

Thanksgiving Meditative Hike to Hook Mountain

I don't know about you, but I've been craving some nature recently. This hike will give you the opportunity to escape NYC, see some trees, and get plenty of silence. Ahhhhh, the sound of nothingness. Remember that?

$45-$80 sliding scale. 10 AM to 3:30 PM. Transportation details here.

Sunday, November 25

We the News Story Circle

"
Join We the News’s story circle and share your stories on migration, rituals, tradition, and race as an immigrant living in New York City. The stories shared will be documented and transcribe into zines in a traveling newsstand. Each participant will have a set time to share and listen as we co-create our own narratives. Let us know if you are planning on coming and would like to have a translator."

Free. 2:30 to 4:30 PM. We the News, Nostrand and Jefferson Ave. Info here.

People of Color Sangha

This is a space for people of color who find nourishment and inspiration in the teachings and practice of Buddhism. The group’s intention provides a safe, brave and cherished place to openly discuss experiences living and navigating oppressive, racial, biased, social structures.

Donation-based. 1:30 to 3:30 PM. Brooklyn Zen Center, 505 Carroll St. Info here.
