Wisconsin received more than $39.7M in Big Ten media contract revenue for FY18, more than twice its payout from the previous year. The new figure comes during the first year of the league's new six-year FB and BB deals with Fox, ESPN and CBS, which totaled $2.64B according to the SportsBusiness Journal. Asked by Athletics Board Chair Miller whether the FY18 total is a reliable indicator for future years, UW Assoc. AD for Business Operations Morris said: "It becomes a large part of the budget, which makes you a little bit nervous, right? We talk about the fragility of college athletics and not knowing what’s going to happen with those rights in the future. The Big Ten gives us information that only goes out a couple years. For right now, they’re projecting that it’s relatively stable over the next couple of years.” Morris also noted that with a total revenue of $133.6M, the athletic department saw a net positive margin of $271,834 in FY17-18 and had more than $1.3M cash on hand. Total revenue from the B1G was $51.6M, including $8.2M from bowl payouts and $3.9M from the NCAA. Of the $8.5M UW athletics returned to the university last year, $5.7M was from media rights while the rest largely came from licensing, parking and the band. (link)
Colorado Chancellor DiStefano yesterday sent a letter to the campus community and CU supporters explaining the reasoning behind parting ways with FB HC MacIntyre, whom he credited with elevating the program's FB profile while achieving record levels of team GPAs. However, DiStefano continued, "on the field during the past two seasons has not lived up to our expectations. ... Since [AD George] took over the Athletic Department in 2013, he has been innovative, improved the student-athlete experience and been fiscally responsible. While our fans celebrated the 2016 season, we have had four losing seasons during Mike’s tenure and a team that is currently 5-6. [George] and I know that we can’t fill our stadium with fans, and thus be fiscally sustainable, unless we have consistent winning seasons. It’s important we bring on new leadership now so we can get back to having consistent success on the field, which will also boost Athletics ticket sales revenue to further fund the department." (link); USA Today's Berkowitz reports that MacIntyre's contract calls for him to be paid a $10.4M buyout in equal monthly installments through December 31, 2021. Should MacIntyre find a new job, those installments will be offset by his future pay. DiStefano notes that all buyout money will come from athletic department funds. (link)
Ole Miss AD Bjork has reached out to SEC Commish Sankey concerning the controversial reversal of an OT TD that would have allowed the Rebels to either kick the PAT or go for two and potentially win its contest against Vanderbilt on Saturday. Despite what appeared to be evidence that the on-field call of TD should've been confirmed, officials overturned the call. The game ended on an incompletion the next play, and Bjork said he was able to contact Sankey as the team traveled back to Oxford. "We also spoke again earlier today, and Coach (Matt) Luke and I both spoke with the SEC supervisor of officials. Our goal was to seek an explanation of the replay decision and understand why the touchdown catch ruling was overturned. As Coach Luke stated last night, we believe A.J. landed in the end zone with possession of the ball and have communicated that we view the play differently. Our focus turns to honoring our senior class on Thanksgiving night and keeping the Egg Bowl trophy in Oxford." Bjork did not indicate whether the SEC will take any action one way or the other concerning the call or the outcomes of the game. Auburn AD Greene sat down with Tailgate Guys CEO Duffey for AthleticDirectorU with Jordan-Hare Stadium in the background to discuss measuring outcomes and developing successful Student-Athlete experiences. The two leaders also delve into key aspects of hiring and managing personnel changes. Greene: "Anyone who says they have things figured out isn’t being truthful to themselves, especially in college athletics. […] At the end of the day, it’s less about the outcomes and more about the inputs and what we’re doing to create a successful culture and environment on the front end. […] If you get too caught up in outcomes, you’ll find yourself living week to week." More. (link)

Contract for new Kansas FB HC Miles: Five years, $2.775M base, $225K retention bonus payments in November of 2020 & November of 2022. A one-time, one-year extension if the Jayhawks win six regular season games. Other incentives include $75K for a bowl appearance, $50K for a cumulative GPA of 2.75+, $50K worth of private air travel in year one. The deal was signed on the 16th. More. (link); FootballScoop's Rousell wonders why LSU recently agreed to pay Miles the lump sum of $1.5M to clear their books, "Had LSU not entered into the settlement with Les this week, this very week, the university would have been completely off the hook. Miles’ new contract with KU would have completely 'mitigated' LSU’s obligation and LSU would have owed Les nothing else. Not one dollar. […] Unless I’m just missing something, Joe Alleva just cost LSU $1.5 million for no good reason." (link)

While questioning the wisdom that, per initial reports, the Cleveland Browns were considering former Secretary of State Rice for the team's vacant head coaching position, Yahoo's Wetzel contends that the NFL, "and the Browns in particular, would benefit from expanding the candidates pool for jobs within their organizations by looking to women that other teams are ignoring. For head coach though? And for Rice, who for all her overwhelming intelligence has never, you know, coached football?" Still, he posits, while the notion of someone with no head coaching experience becoming an NFL head coach may be "folly," and while it's possible, if not likely, that a woman will be an NFL head coach one day, this situation has "shined a spotlight on what the NFL should consider an opportunity, not a problem." Namely, that the NFL excludes "half of the available talent pool by hiring, almost exclusively, men. ... While the idea of Coach Condi makes no sense, General Manager Condi or Team President Condi or Consultant-Bringing-A-Fresh-Set-Of-Eyes-To-Our-Woebegone-Franchise Condi makes lots of sense." It makes even more sense, he continues, if it's not Rice, but someone whose career has been spent working her way up an organizational chart. The idea wouldn't be without precedent, Wetzel also notes, citing former Raiders CEO Task and current Bengals Executive VP Blackburn among others. "The advantage is there for the taking. One day some football man is going to be smart enough to take it." (link)
The Harvard Business Review's Saunders offers advice for those whose managers are prone to coming up with new ideas at a dizzying rate, noting that while "visionary bosses can be exciting, fun and innovative," they can also be "overwhelming" when there's no realistic way to keep pace with their creative ideas. One strategy Saunders suggests for effectively working with such a boss is to foster mutual respect. Specifically, Saunders notes that individuals who are more action-oriented may become judgmental and feel as if they are the only person who "gets anything done and contributes value around here." Instead of assigning value to the types of work being done, Saunders proposes that it's "most helpful to look at them as complementary assets you both bring to the team." Another strategy Saunders espouses is understanding that not all ideas require action. "Often times your boss just wants to share something that’s on her mind and is satisfied with acknowledgment of the idea. The general rule in these situations is that you wait until the idea is brought up a few more times before doing anything." Finally, for managers who feel that every idea should be pursued, Saunders advises asking for specifics -- whether by laying out exactly how many employee hours or money the idea will take to implement or by asking the manager how this new thought aligns with more immediately and previously defined objectives. "By laying out how pursuing a new idea will have an impact on other priorities, you can help your boss assess what makes the most sense from a strategic perspective." (link)
Former Montana AD O'Day interviews with MontanaSports.com, believes more FCS departments need to consider the revenue possibilities of making a jump up to FBS play. O'Day: "If you look at the Bowl Championship Series and the way it is right now, I mean, there’s big dollars out there. But even for the schools that are playing in the Mountain West Conference and some of the smaller schools that are playing not in the Power 5 conferences but the others in the Group of Five or whatever, they’re still getting money. And that money is helping you pay your bills." O'Day notes that ADs at all levels deal with the same core question, "How do we create money?" Also wonders if being an AD these days is better suited for younger professionals as the energy level needed is off the charts. More. (link)
NYIT (DII) researchers followed 10 of the university's Men's LAX student-athletes throughout the 2018 season to measure the effect of blows to the head. Each player wore a mouthguard with sensors to gather the data & the results are somewhat troubling. Important: "The test results showed 'subtle changes' and players wouldn’t recognize the shifts in memory or reaction time. [...] The key 'finding from our research was that both verbal and visual memory — which are two different aspects of our cognitive process — declined . . .   from baseline at both midseason and postseason.' […] 'The evidence and the literature supports exactly this and that is these low-level impacts are creating changes, physical changes to the brain tissue, which are basically injured neurons.' (link)
Notable sports agent Steinberg inks for Forbes on what he sees as dangerous volume levels at sporting events, points to OSHA safety standards of 90 decibels as the loudest anyone should endure over an eight hour period of time. Notable: "Duke University published a paper that found one-third of the participants in a study conducted at an NCAA Arena experienced noise levels far above this safety margin. […] So let the fan beware. Stadium operators have programmed an earth-shattering level of nonstop music, announcements and fan encouragements, and it seems to be getting louder." (link)
