2018 JOINT ANNUAL MEETING (JAM)

Diversity and Flexibility in the BC Transfer System

The 2018 JAM began with an opening address delivered by Hon. Melanie Mark, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training, who expressed her enthusiastic support for BCCAT and the great work of transfer and articulation in the province. Mr. Tony Loughran, Executive Lead, at the Ministry was also in attendance for the second year, and Elder Margaret George of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation provided the welcome and opening prayer.

The keynote address was provided by Dr. Joel Heng Hartse, Lecturer, Faculty of Education, at Simon Fraser University. The presentation entitled “Beyond ESL: Support for Both Multilingual and International Students in BC Higher Education” considered current practices and future possibilities in supporting the large and diverse group of students for whom English is a second language, both to the rise in EAL students (international and domestic) in BC post-secondary classrooms, and to the need to make decisions about how to adapt admissions criteria in light of the K-12 curriculum reform in BC.

The event brought together a capacity gathering of 160 attendees from across the province and beyond. All of the day’s presentations will be posted on the BCCAT JAM webpage.
