Happy News: Love at First Sight Saves a Life

For Billy Higgins, saving a young boy’s life was not on his radar. Rather, the twenty-something year old from southeast England had hopped into the donor queue after a woman waiting in the line had caught his eye. Little did he know that by becoming a bone marrow donor that day, he would end up saving a child’s life.

10-year-old Rupert Cross had been diagnosed with a rare blood disorder four years ago and had spent 80 days in the hospital battling the disorder, when he received Billy’s bone marrow and was completely cured.

The cherry on top? Billy ended up marrying the young woman from the donor queue!

Greening the Holidays through the 3Rs

The holiday season can be a time for joy with family and friends. Unfortunately, it can also be a time when we collectively create a lot of waste. Each year Canadians throw approximately 540,000 tonnes of wrapping paper and gift bags.

Instead of the traditional giftwrapping, consider these options:
  1. Reuse old gift bags and wrapping paper that are in good condition.
  2. Repurpose textile for a unique presentation.
  3. Use wrapping paper that is made from recycled content and is recyclable (no metallic foil).
Don’t forget to recycle what you can and avoid throwing garbage into the wrong bin. Here is a reference list of top holiday waste materials:
Blue Bin
Wrapping paper and wrapping tissue
Clear plastic packaging (molded and unmolded)
Garbage
Metallic wrapping paper and foil
Ribbons and bows (including fabric)
Tape
Gift bags
Bubbled plastic packaging
Twist ties
Tinsel and Ornaments

A Season for Giving

We’ve all been told that giving is better than receiving but now there is research to support the claim. In various controlled studies, social psychologist Liz Dunn and colleagues found that people are happier spending money on others than spending on oneself. There a multitude of opportunities to give time or donation to worthy organizations in the Greater Toronto Area. Here are a few ideas:
  1. Cook up a delicious meal: Look up a shelter to offer your help making a festive meal
  2. Bring a toy: Commerce Court is collecting toys for the Toronto Fire Fighters’ Toy Drive
  3. Hand out a Gift Card: Purchase a few gift cards for a warm meal to hand out when passing by a homeless person.
