OPPORTUNITIES

Dear TC Community,

Global Citizens Club (GCC), a student organization on campus, has an opening for an executive board position, the Public Relations Officer for Spring 2019.

The mission of GCC is to act as a community-building organization as it seeks to explore with the broader community what it means to embody the role of a Global Citizen. We anticipate organizing events to understand how we can place one’s identity with the global community, while strategizing on how to take collective action. GCC supports the goal of understanding, accepting and celebrating fundamental similarities and differences between individuals/communities as we build solidarity and a sense of belonging beyond borders.

If you would like to be considered for this position, please fill out this form before Saturday, December 1, 2018. Details of the position are mentioned in the form. You are welcome to circulate this amongst friends who may be interested.

Feel free to reach out to us with any questions. We look forward to hearing from you as we gear up for the upcoming semester.

Warm Regards,

Current GCC Executive Board

FACULTY FEATURE
Prof. Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz was featured in a nine-part film series, called ideo, part of a film series on Culturally Responsive Education (CRE) Stories. Her segment of the film series has received much acclaim and has gone viral in educational circles.

From the CRE Stories website, here is a description of the segment: "Using an archaeological approach, Sealey-Ruiz mentors educators of all backgrounds on how to do the "deep work" of excavating their personal histories and activating their racial consciousness as a precursor to theorizing about pedagogy."

Prof. Sealey-Ruiz returned recently from presenting at two different conferences, the International Urban Education Conference and the NCTE Conference. Stay tuned for more details on her conference experiences!

TC Mothers Club
Minhye Son

Eight mothers attended the meeting, including one faculty member, and we discussed the challenges facing students and faculty who are parents. We brainstormed about the benefits and logistics surrounding establishing a babysitting network similar to or joined with Columbia University's https://worklife.columbia.edu. Posting references for childcare and support for incoming and current students was also discussed. The name may be changed to TC Parent Group to include fathers and other guardians. My name is Yuanheng (Arthur) Wang and I am a second year M.A. student in Applied Linguistics in the Applied Linguistics & TESOL Program. I have enjoyed my program immensely since I came to TC at Fall 2017 due primarily to the superb faculty members, intellectually stimulating and practically relevant courses, supportive peers with diverse language teaching and learning backgrounds, and abundant scholarly resources the program offers. My research interests include discourse analysis, second language writing, and English for specific/academic purposes; I also love teaching adults or college-level students who are non-native speakers of English.

He has recently had the honor of presenting at a number of conferences:
1) Multiple literacies, multiple identities: A service learning project in a second language learning class. Paper presented at the Fall 2018 Applied Linguistics & TESOL Research & Pedagogy Forum at TC.
2) Rhetorical moves in teaching philosophy statements: A genre study. Paper presented at the New York State TESOL 48th Annual Conference in Albany, NY.
3) Resisting collaborative turn completion. Paper presented at the 8th Annual Meeting of Language and Social Interaction Working Group (LANSI) at TC.
4)The eloquent wives in Othello and the Winter’s Tale. Paper presented at the 11th Annual Penn State Behrend Gender Conference in Erie, PA.
