RA Annual Meeting Recap and Thanks

Betty and BrionOur thanks to everyone who attended our annual meeting last month, what a great evening!  Special thanks to our awesome speakers for sharing their inspiring success stories:
  • Jules Bailey of OBRC described how Oregon's statewide Bottle Refill program is taking off, with more and more craft breweries interested in participating, choosing to distribute their beer in bottles designed to be washed and refilled instead of crushed and recycled. Read more about the program here.
  • Kirk Mustain from Bon Appetit at UP described the bold steps he has taken to remove disposable containers and utensils from the university's campus food service, he drew rounds of applause from listeners when he talked about Bon Appetit's sustainable purchasing practices and community partnerships aimed at ensuring that food does not go to waste.
At this meeting we said a fond farewell to Betty Patton who has been involved with RA almost since its inception. She leaves the RA board to focus on her work with the Humane Society of the United States. We will miss her terribly, but we wish her the very best and know that she will do great things for HSUS. Thanks a million for everything you've done for RA over the years, Betty!

Lastly, our thanks to meeting sponsors DrinkThink, New Seasons Market, Fred Meyer and OBRC for providing delicious eats and drinks.

BYOC Campaign Update

Our BYOC campaign continues to gain momentum in the metro area and further afield. All around the country - actually around the world - we're seeing more and more initiatives aimed at reducing coffee cup waste. One of the latest is an innovative "mug check-out" program just introduced in Boulder, Colorado, where customers can borrow stainless steel coffee mugs from participating coffee shops, much like they borrow library books. Read about it here: Vessel Mug Check-out, Boulder, CO.

Also be sure to watch the video of Nossa Familia Coffee's presentation from the Zero Waste Conference last month, they had some fantastic results to report from their new Seven Corners Collaborative location. See the video here: Nossa Familia at ZWC.

Thanks Karen and Camille for your great presentation, and congratulations on the success of the new cafe!

RA Founder Retires After Prolific Nonprofit Career
By Betty Patton, RA Past-President

Jeanne and Dick RoyIn 1987, Jeanne Roy led the beginning of Recycling Advocates with a small group of like-minded friends. Thirty-one years later she and her husband retired from their many nonprofit organizations. During this 3-decade span, the two of them created 11 other organizations and initiatives focused on teaching, leading and celebrating sustainability in Oregon.

Jeanne started Recycling Advocates to inform and educate our fellow Portlanders. This was at a time before we had curbside recycling. Five years later, we had a more structured recycling and waste collection system, thanks to her dedication.

She held monthly Recycling Advocates meetings with invited speakers covering a variety of current topics. She recruited a lot of volunteers, myself included, to work on projects of our choosing or to contribute to ongoing projects. She recruited board members and held the monthly board of directors’ meetings in her home. The creation, printing and mailing of a monthly newsletter was all Jeanne’s idea. These monthly printings covered the latest hot topics, reviewed the previous meeting’s presentations, and invited folks to the next meeting.

In 1992 Jeanne co-created the Master Recycler Program in the Portland Metro region. After initial establishment, she transferred the program to the City of Portland. This successful program continues to provide training to 90 people per year.

Metro Public Forum: Let's Talk Trash

Metro LogoOn December 5th you're invited to participate in a public forum to discuss Metro's draft 2030 Regional Waste Plan. You'll have the opportunity to review the plan, hear about the development and adoption process, ask questions and provide feedback. The forum will be held at Metro's offices on NE Grand Ave from 3pm to 6pm.

Metro says: "Every day, residents and businesses of greater Portland throw stuff away. Metro manages the system that handles and transports all that stuff – some 2.4 million tons every year of garbage, food scraps, yard trimmings, recycling, and hazardous waste – to their final destinations. Over the last 18 months, Metro has worked with communities around the region to shape the future of the garbage and recycling system with the development of the 2030 Regional Waste Plan."

The plan addresses issues including:
  • How our garbage and recycling system impacts the environment, both locally and globally, and throughout the life of the products we make, use and throw away
  • How it impacts human health, including chemicals in products that pose a danger
  • How its inequitable distribution of services, benefits and impacts harm communities of color and others in our region.
If you are interested but cannot attend the forum you can read the draft plan and submit comments via Metro's website, the deadline to provide comments is Dec 21st.
