Cancer and body weight

Energy balance and body fatness: report launched

Overweight and obesity are considered to be one of the most pressing public health concerns of this century. Living with overweight or obesity is linked to many diseases – including 12 different types of cancer – and at a population level is associated with significant negative economic impacts.

That is why, on 7 November 2018, we published in full our evidence and judgements on exposures that increase or decrease the risk of weight gain, overweight and obesity. The report, Energy balance and body fatness: the determinants of weight gain, overweight and obesity, is available to download for free. One of the key findings is the strong evidence that greater screen time increases the risk of excess weight gain, overweight and obesity in children. This is because screen time is a marker of sedentary behaviour and may also be associated with low levels of physical activity, eating and drinking high-calorie snacks and drinks, and exposure to marketing of unhealthy food and drinks.

New government policies added

Every few months, Bryony and Fiona from our Policy & Public Affairs team update our policy database, NOURISHING, with more food policies that have been implemented all around the world. One of the policies added in last month’s update is Israel's introduction of mandatory food guidelines in schools and after-school programmes. These guidelines specify what food can be offered in schools, promoting healthy food while banning unhealthy food.

New expertise group for cancer survivors research

Stronger evidence for the impact of diet, nutrition and physical activity on recurrence and mortality outcomes in cancer survivors is needed. That is why we are expanding our cancer survivors work in the Continuous Update Project. The newly formed Cancer Survivors Protocol Expertise Group will advise us on the methods used for the scientific literature search – this will enable us to compile global evidence on cancer survivors research.
