December, January and February 2018/19 Newsletter

Bring on summer!  Now we have defrosted and the days are longer it has been lovely seeing more people out and about enjoying this glorious weather.

We would like to thank the people in our village that take time out of their lives to organise activities for our residents.  Without these few hardworking, motivated people our village would not be as social and active.  We really appreciate what they do for us all.

-  A well organised Library Group that has get-togethers, book reviews, and many fundraisers
-  A fun weekly game of Hoi in the barn, with prizes
-  Keeping our mind sharp and active, Trivia Tuesdays
-  An amazing Lawn Bowls Club, put on many day and night comps
-  A thriving Social Club that put on fantastic events and BBQ's
Aqua Aerobics that keeps some of our residents active and fit,

Work Being Undertaken
You must all be seeing the changes we have been making in our village, please be extra careful where you walk as there will be many witches hats and taped no go areas around work sites.  The tennis court looks fantastic and with the new court fencing to be installed in a couple of weeks, it will be ready to use.  Who is going to start a tennis club?

Some other work that is being undertaken in the near future;
Removal of the old garden beds and stumps from around the entrance
A concrete pathway out the front of the reception building
Road upgrades
Beautiful travertine tiles and new fencing around the pool
A new pergola sitting area next to the tennis court

Staff Changes
It is sad to see Nicole leave us as she is taking on full time employment and wish Jacob luck in his new endeavour and big move up north. They will both be missed by staff and residents.

We would like to welcome Ann, Doug and Cheyne who have joined our workforce here at Lakeside.

With the new custom made stairs installed and our pool warming up, its been awesome to see it being used more and more. Whilst the pavers are being laid and the fencing upgraded, the pool will be closed temporarily.  We will endeavour to get this work completed as quickly as possible and not inconvenience you too much.  When it is finished, I am sure you will all agree on how beautiful it looks.  It will definitely become one of the draw cards to our village.

Library News

Hello to all our regular readers, and hopefully to some new enthusiasts as well.  The cold winter weather is over and we no longer need to huddle around the gas fire with a DVD or a good book, so perhaps it is time to think about some summer reading on the front porch or while lazing beside the lake somewhere.

I have compiled a list of the most popular crime/thriller authors that are to be found on our shelves.  Each of these have many titles available and each has several of those amongst our collection.

T
ry a new author that you have not read before and you may have a pleasant surprise by your discovery of another favourite.  Remember they all have an ORANGE dot.

American Crime Authors

James Patterson – PAT

Harlen Coben – COB

John Grisham – GRI

Jeffrey Deaver – DEA

Michael Connelly – CON

Karin Slaughter – SLA

Kathy Reichs – REI

Sue Grafton – GRA

British Crime Authors

P.D. James – JAM

Agatha Cristie – CHR

Ruth Rendell – REN

Linda La Plante – LAP

Martina Cole – COL

Lee Child – CHI

Elizabeth George – GEO

Peter Robinson - ROB

There are many others, just look for the ORANGE dot on the spine of the book and that will tell you that you have found yet another spine chilling treasure on our shelves.
If your fancy is ROMANCE, then look for a PINK dot: For General DRAMA, FAMILY  SAGAS, ADVENTURE and HISTORICAL NOVELS try the books with the BLUE dot: For TRUE STORIES and BIOGRAPHIES the yellow dot is the one to look for when selecting your book.

There is only a small selection of HORROR, SCI-FI and FANTASY, but HORROR uses a BLACK dot and Fantasy has a WHITE one.

You are assured of finding what you want, and please remember to browse along the Large Print shelves, housed near the DVD collection.

Tuesday Trivia News

2.00pm on the first Tuesday of each month a dedicated group meet to challenge each other and dazzle the gathering with their brilliance at TRIVIA.

The simple fact that no-one can ever answer all the questions does not deter this group from having a good time , or from enjoying a yummy afternoon tea, while having a laugh and a good gossip about life and its mysteries.

We have recently tried a new format, where 10 questions are written on a paper and the teams have 10 – 15 minutes to answer them. This has proved very successful as it means known answers are quickly disposed of, and there is time to ponder and discuss the difficult questions. It has led to a smoother, more enjoyable game that allows all thinkers to have their input considered as the topics are thrashed out around the tables.

Scores are really becoming competitive, with the last session having the three teams on the day finishing with 44, 45 and 46 points respectively. It was a very closely played game all round.

You do not need a team. You just need to be keen to match your wits with others of like mind and to have the wish to join in with a group that has a lot of laughs as they pull each question to pieces and try to find the answers.

Come and join us for a relaxing afternoon, no pressure, just some good fun. We will make you welcome. Costs $2.00 for the afternoon. This is $1.00 for afternoon tea supplies and $1.00 for the Prize Kitty, which goes to the winning team

When you join us, try to get on the same team as Wazza or Sally.... you will be sure of sharing the Pot if you do!.

Contact: Bill Walker  4358 4542 or Warren Loxley   4358 4743 for more information

The wooden horse race was a laugh a minute and again thank you to Rhondda Dorahy for her skills in running the race.

Huge thanks to the whole committee who made all the salads – pasta, potato, curried pasta, garden and the other salads.  Better than most clubs you go to.  Also a big thank you to Denis who picked up the chicken and ice.

Fashion in the Field was of a very high standard – Best Female, Best Male and Best Couple received prizes.

Our Surprise Guest (William) did the draw for the $100 note raffle and this was won by Sue Macpherson.

At this point I would like to thank a few people for their continual support and brute strength  -  Margaret and David Hope, Sue Macpherson, Margaret Davis, Lorraine and Doug Munt, Bill Turner, Alan and Sue Dyer, Deb and Rick Farr and of course, our wonderful committee members.  Without the help and support of you all this Social Club would not be able to function.  So from me a big thank you to each and every one of you.
