Former dean steps down after 10 years of co-chairing UCSB Chancellor's Sustainability Committee

Often spotted with handmade bow ties and matching handkerchiefs, Bruce Tiffney has been an influential presence on UC Santa Barbara’s campus for more than a decade. Along with being a distinguished professor in the Earth Science Department and interim Dean of the College of Creative Studies, Tiffney has played a huge role in shaping UCSB’s Sustainability Program. He was the founding co-chair of the Chancellor Sustainability Committee (CSC), which was formed in 2008 to advise the Chancellor and campus administrators on campus sustainability initiatives. As the co-chair for the past ten years, Tiffney has been influential in many projects. 
 

UC Health joins the U.S. Health Care Climate Council

UC Health joined the leadership body of health systems committed to protecting their patients and employees from the health impacts of climate change and becoming anchors for resilient communities. "UC Health believes bold action is needed on climate change, because healthy communities cannot be sustained in the midst of an increasingly unhealthy environment," said John Stobo, M.D., UC Health executive vice president. "This is why we are committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2025 and are excited to join the Health Care Climate Council."
 

Sustainability in Financial Affairs at UCSC: Travel Software, Green Team, & More

Financial Affairs at UCSC has taken on many sustainability-related initiatives in recent years to promote greener business operations. As the folks in charge of managing all the finances throughout campus, they deal with a lot of paperwork. Many of the initiatives and changes that have been implemented involve replacing physical paperwork with digital documents on the computer, saving massive amounts of paper, ink, and storage space. Along with these changes, Financial Affairs is taking other steps towards saving water, electricity, and reducing waste to landfill. 
 

UC Irvine, Berkeley, Merced, and San Francisco receive 2018 Marks of Distinction for progress towards climate goals

The Climate Leadership Network, made up of the over 500 signatories to the Presidents’ Climate Leadership Commitments, mobilizes the sector’s knowledge and practical expertise to accelerate global climate action and local community impact. The Marks of Distinction initiative recognizes signatories that have reached various key performance indicators and that demonstrate climate leadership. UC Irvine, Berkeley, Merced, and San Francisco all received Marks of Distinction for the following achievements: 100% Renewable Energy Goal, Aggregated Renewable Energy Procurement, and being We are Still In members.

UC San Diego Health is hiring its first Sustainability Officer

The Sustainability Officer for UC San Diego Health will provide leadership, analysis, and program recommendations to ensure compliance with the UCOP Policy on Sustainable Practices and establish UCSD Health as a leader in sustainability. As a principal resource to Health System leadership on sustainability programs, you will develop, manage, and implement current and future Health System Sustainability programs, as well as educate and affect behavior in order to develop a culture of sustainability. Job Opening: Sustainability Programs Manager at UCLA Health

UCLA Health is hiring a new Sustainability Programs Manager. Job duties include: develop and lead a comprehensive sustainability program; manage and oversee sustainability-related contracted management agreements and operations of the Health System; and manage and oversee all Waste Streams Management programs. This includes general environmental services, sustainable product procurement, waste elimination, toxicity reduction, and energy and water consumption reduction for UCLA Health. When you join UCLA Health, you’ll be working at an institution that provides leading-edge care to the people of L.A. and throughout the world. 
 

Global Social Venture Competition: 2019 applications now open

Students who have an early-stage startup with a technology component aiming to make a difference in the world are encouraged to apply to compete in the Global Social Venture Competition. GSVC empowers the next generation of social entrepreneurs by providing them with mentoring, exposure, and over $80,000 in prizes to transform their ideas into ventures that address the world's most pressing challenges using technology for good. Teams from across the globe learn how to design scalable models using the Lean Startup Methodology, a process that emphasizes stakeholder discovery, business innovation, and social impact assessment. Applications are due December 3rd.
