Thursday 15 November - Friday 23 November

GENERAL INFORMATION

End of Year Projects
Our annual End of Year Projects will run from Wednesday 21 November until Friday 30 November. Each day all students in Years 7-10 will be taking part in the following three activities:

  • 125 Projects
Students will be given the opportunity to explore the history of Woodford House through their involvement in projects related to the 125th Anniversary. This year there is a choice of eight different projects which include: creating a decade by decade fashion show, researching and playing some of the sports which our Old Girls experienced, and creating the content for part of our 125th Anniversary Exhibition, which will be a key part of next year’s celebrations.

  • Service Projects
Working in Year groups, students will be making and buying gifts for the following groups: the children of patients at the Hawke’s Bay Hospital, the residents of Waiapu House, and families supported by the Women’s Refuge. Students will be informed over the course of the next week what they need to bring into school as part of these projects.

  • House Drama
Year 10 students will be leading all Junior students in their respective Houses in devising and presenting a 15-minute drama performance. The theme this year is Disney Princesses. Parents are warmly invited to watch the performances from 1pm on Friday 30 November.

Pretty Smart Presentation
Year 9 and 10 students, not sitting NCEA Level 1 Mathematics, will be walking to Iona College after lunch on Friday 16 November to hear the Pretty Smart presentation.

Our presenter will discuss the definition of beauty and how it is seen in media and advertising. The aim is to initiate critical thinking about what is seen and heard every day and promote positive body image for young women.

"Many girls start to lose their confidence at around 12. They start worrying more about how they look than how they’re doing in subjects like maths or science. And with 24/7 access to the internet, thousands are asking Google every month if they're pretty enough. Google is not kind with its answers," says Angela Barnett.

"Studies show that if teens are taught how the media and advertising works, they are less affected by it. Pretty Smart Talks teaches them beauty is far more powerful as a feeling than an adjective. And while it's fine to feel pretty and beautiful, it's important not to be hoodwinked by the industry."

Senior Christmas Gifts
To conclude our service focus for 2018, we are asking all senior students to bring in at least one non-perishable food item when they return to school in the final week. All of our Christmas gifts will be blessed in Chapel on Monday 3 December.

Olive Oil Fundraising for the 2019 Europe Trip
As part of our fundraising for next year’s Europe trip we have bottles of limited edition boutique olive oil for sale at $25 per bottle. This was pressed from the olives which our students and their families picked at the Dowley Family residence earlier in the year. It is delicious and would make an ideal Christmas gift. If you would like to purchase a bottle or two please complete the following link: https://permission.click/aGJaJ/nz

Health Update
The recent confirmed cases of mumps in Hastings is a timely reminder for parents and caregivers to check your daughter’s immunisation status and make sure it is up to date. If your child is presenting with a fever and swollen glands around the face and neck, please contact your family doctor in the first instance.
