UMKC introduced former Cal State Northridge AD Martin as its next AD. During the presser, UMKC Chancellor Agrawal cited Martin's passion as an educator as a distinguishing quality, asserting that Martin will "lead true scholar-athletes at UMKC," adding: "He is coming here to build a tradition that our campus and community can rally around with enthusiasm and pride, and I am confident that he will succeed.” Martin, who also served as a faculty member at USC and Oklahoma and has presented over 40 papers at symposia and higher ed conferences, also embraced the importance of leading scholar-athletes. "I always had a passion for education. I always knew that I would become a teacher. I wanted to work in college athletics, but I wanted to be connected to the true fabric and true mission of a university. I knew that I needed a terminal degree.” As for his goals at UMKC, Martin's vision is clearly defined: become a top 100 DI program, win WAC titles and provide an exceptional experience for student-athletes who not only graduate, but go on to become leaders in other areas of life. "There's really no ceiling on how great we can become." (link); The Kansas City Star's Gregorian calls Martin an "inspiring fit" but acknowledges that it might be "audacious" to expect Martin to "transform a landscape that hinges greatly on the success of men’s basketball." Also, despite Martin's departure from CSUN in March following an altercation with former MBB HC Theus, Martin also received a "very positive letter of reference and support" from CSUN Prez Harrison. Updates on the Vanderbilt AD search: USA Today's Wolken indicates NBA G League Prez Turner has interviewed, while Commodores beat reporter Lee says Army West Point AD Corrigan is no longer involved. (link, link)
AAC Commish Aresco yesterday signaled a potential shift in his position concerning an expansion to the CFP, telling ESPN that UCF's strength of schedule puts them at a disadvantage. Aresco goes on to wonder aloud: "Because if certain teams, like Ohio State and others, maybe had the schedule UCF has and they ran the table, would they still be in the playoff? That's the question I would pose. I don't know. You can answer that." While he doesn't see much of a push for an expansion now, Aresco notes that as more Power 5 conferences are left out, the calls may start to grow louder. "This year, you could have a scenario where three could be left out. It's possible. If that's the case, you might even see some sentiment on that side to expand it, whether you go to six and have byes or whether you go to eight." Circling back to the strength of schedule argument, Aresco observes that, despite the arguments, there is at least some measuring stick when examining AAC performances against common opponents, citing UCF's big win over Pittsburgh, whom Aresco notes has "been winning in the ACC now," and Houston's defeat of Arizona, who is still in contention to make the Pac-12 title game. "UCF may have played some teams that didn't have stellar records, but look at the decisive wins. If it's a decisive win, that should matter too. That shows how strong your team is, and I'm not talking about running up the score. I'm talking about a decisive win, and you've seen some decisive wins on the P5 side that impressed the committee, and I think that should be a factor too." (link)
Yahoo's Wetzel also discusses a scenario in which the CFP could leave out three 'Power 5' conferences by including two SEC teams (Alabama and Georgia), Notre Dame and Clemson. The scenario, which Wetzel posits could also serve as an impetus to a playoff expansion, is not that far-fetched, either. For it to happen, Alabama, Notre Dame and Georgia would need to win their remaining games, and UGA would then have to upset Alabama in the SEC title game. As plausible as this scenario is, Wetzel goes on to paint a picture of what the other side of the playoff bubble would look like even if it doesn't: "Even if it doesn’t pan out, this scenario should terrify leagues into action. The Big Ten could see a 12-1 Michigan beat Ohio State and capture the league title, finishing the season on a 12-game win streak, and be left out. The Big 12 could have Oklahoma, whose only defeat was to Texas on a final-second, neutral-site field goal, stay home. The Pac-12 could have a 12-1 Washington State team not even get serious discussion, just another year of its conference season playing out in relative obscurity because of the playoff." Not to mention, UCF, he adds. To Wetzel, expanding to eight teams should be a no-brainer, but college football "nonsensically [outsourcing]" its most valuable property [the CFP] to bowl games will prove another formidable barrier, with first-round playoff games having to be played on campus, "and the old bowl cronies sure aren't in favor of that." Regardless, he argues, playing "first-round games on campus would be epic, the money would be huge and every league race would remain significant until the end. Or the powers that be can just sit back and watch two leagues and Notre Dame hog the playoff spotlight." (link)
Wetzel continues, argues Notre Dame made the right move by not fully joining a conference back during the last round of major shifts. Thesis: "For Notre Dame, independence begets scheduling flexibility and scheduling flexibility allows it to present itself to a national recruiting base that in turn allows it to be more than just a traditional power with a big, beautiful stadium stuck in the demographic-challenged Midwest. […] Could the Irish conceivably make more money in the short term in media deals? Absolutely. The Big Ten, led by its conference-owned cable network, hit a per-school payout of $51 million last year. Notre Dame has a $15 million exclusive deal with NBC and brought in just over $5 million for its ACC partnership. Yet no one has ever strolled through campus or toured the football facilities and lamented that Notre Dame must be broke. They’ll always have the money. They just raise it elsewhere." (link); Fighting Irish AD Swarbrick is on the wire again, this time in a convo with The Athletic's Fortuna. Much of the piece is dedicated to the job FB HC Kelly has done in South Bend, but there's also this, "My goal as the athletic director is to help everybody who works for us to get to where they want to be, and for most assistant coaches in most of our sports, they want to be head coaches, and I want to help them get there. The part of helping them get there is helping them make the smart choice as to when it’s time to move and when the opportunity is the right one." (link)
The NCAA DI Graduation Success Rate improved to 88% for 2018, a 1% increase over last year and 14% increase since 2002. The overall rate increase is attributable in part to an uptick among black student-athletes in all sports (up 2% to 79%), MBB student-athletes (up 3% to 85%) and FCS participants (up 3% to 79%), among others. Broken down further, black MBB student-athletes saw a GSR increase from 78% last year to 82%. Prez Emmert: "Student-athletes continue to achieve academic success at record levels. When the GSR was created more than 15 years ago, the NCAA set an aspirational goal of 80 percent of student-athletes graduating. College athletes have met and exceeded that goal -- as they often do with any challenge. Most significant is the number of black student-athletes who earn their degree. As college graduates, they are much more likely to have successful careers after they leave school.” Since 2002, the GSR for black MBB student-athletes has increased by 36% while the GSR for black WBB student-athletes has gone up 19 points to 89%. The data reflects six-year graduation rates, or those student-athletes who entered school in 2011. Full report. (link)
The GSR-triggered bonuses per USA Today's Berkowitz: Georgia Tech HC Johnson is due $140K for a team GSR of at least 70% (GT achieved 86%), Missouri HC Odom will receive a bonus of $25K for surpassing the GSR goal of 80% (Mizzou reached 89%) and Alabama HC Saban will receive a $100K bonus with the team achieving a GSR of 84%, surpassing the NCAA minimum and finishing in the top 4 of the SEC. In addition, Purdue HC Brohm will receive a $90K bonus as the team's GSR (77%) is equal to the national GSR for all FBS teams and Minnesota HC Fleck will receive a bonus of $75K by surpassing the 85% benchmark. The Gophers earned a GSR of 89%. Finally, with a GSR surpassing 67.5%, Iowa needs just one more win and a bowl berth for ACs to receive an 8% pay raise, pursuant to HC Ferentz's contract. (link)

UCF AD White met with local reporters this week to discuss the upcoming FB kick v. Cincinnati, which has earned the Knights a visit from ESPN College GameDay and a primetime slot on ABC. White admits to being "a little surprised" the show chose to come to Orlando considering the national conversation about whether UCF, should it win out, belongs in the CFP. He adds: "More importantly for us, whether the playoff constituted with four teams is acceptable to really declare the one true national champion...I feel that it needs to be expanded. I'd like to see the conversation turn to that." White goes on to note how quickly UCF has achieved such success for a school that's only been around for 50 years. Along those lines, when asked about whether Saturday represents the biggest publicity opportunity in school history, White says: "You know what, it probably is. We may have to engage another marketing study to see what the brand value is. I know it was just south of $200 million the last time through the Peach Bowl run and the Shaquem Griffin story. It's been a great week to be a Knight, that's for sure." (link); Meanwhile, the Orlando Sentinel's Bianchi offers the GameDay crew a tour of "the City Beautiful," explaining that "Orlando is a diverse cosmopolitan city, but we are a college football town at our core." In fact, he continues, Orlando is the biggest market in the US without an NFL team. "This means the growth potential of UCF as a college football powerhouse is enormous." Bianchi moves on to pick up the mantle for a Knights' playoff berth, noting that, no, UCF does not play an SEC schedule. But if they did, that would mean they would actually be in the SEC and receive the attendant benefits, i.e. TV money, exposure, etc. Combined with the ever-expanding young alumni base, market size, growth potential and enrollment, Bianchi goes on to ask who else in the country has "more potential than UCF as a Power 5 program?" (link)

His leadership over the last 15 years has brought stability and growth, allowing our conference to be compete on the national stage." (link)
As Louisville AD Tyra goes looking for a new FB HC, some of his comments from Sunday on financial guarantees in contracts will raise some eye brows in the agent community, "We’re not going to be in a position where I’m willing to guarantee the full contract of any future head coach here. The magnitude of the dollars is different today than they were five years ago (or) 10 years go, where people guaranteed full contracts. […] If they don’t want to be here and the buyout is the sticking point, then they don’t want to be here — it's as simple as that…If it’s all about what their buyout is to leave on their terms or our terms, then we’ve got the wrong people." It'll be interesting to see how Tyra's stance plays out over his next handful of HC hires. (link)
More Personnel: North Carolina AD Cunningham on static around FB HC Fedora, "I don’t engage in any speculation. The Athletic's Feldman profiles former Kansas MBB student-athlete & current student-athlete loss of value insurance leader Chenowith, who works with 50+ colleges & had deals with eight first rounders in last year's NFL Draft. Chenowith points to underwriting mistakes when claims don't pay, also notes, "I never sell anybody more loss of value (insurance) than they can possibly collect on based on their rookie contract stipulations. […] I was one of the first guys to go back to school and have it backfire. You heard a lot of, 'Look what happened to Eric.'" (link)
"You may be holding up your iPhone and you may be getting additional information live. You hold it up and you see the players and be getting their stats and may see, OK, Steph Curry at that spot on the floor shoots 42 percent as opposed to 37 percent so he’s better off shooting there. Or LeBron [James] is deciding who on his team he should pass to, and you can instantly see how they do from the corner 3 as opposed to the post or whatever else." That's NBA Commish Silver during a discussion on Tuesday on how augmented reality could be a win for fans in arena. (link)

WaPo's Anderson reports that while Maryland Prez Loh has generated some support after his handling of the FB situation in College Park, "No one on the governing board will say that on the record. But people familiar with the board’s closed-door deliberations, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, say there is widespread support among University System of Maryland regents for a leadership transition at U-Md." Former regent Kelly Jr., "I know he’s ticked off a lot of people. Overall, I think Wallace has done a terrific job at that university. Look at where we are academically, compared to where we were. But that doesn’t mean he should be there forever." (link)
Kansas State AD Taylor with his latest 'Ask the AD' segment, recognizes the "frustration" around FB's performance this year, but says no one is more frustrated than the coaches & student-athletes. On the hoops scheduling front, Taylor says the Big 12 has not had serious discussion on moving some conference games to dates when students are on campus to make sure the energy for league tips is strong. Construction starting to ramp up for the baseball & soccer projects as the Wildcats' track just got striped. (link - video, link - transcript)
NCAA National Coordinator of MBB Officials Collins responds to criticisms levied by Michigan State HC Izzo a few days back. Collins on some flagrant calls for "hook and hold" engagements in the post, "Yes, it’s an additional rule change, but my belief is that if we call the F1 fouls for hook and hold in November, we won’t be calling them in December, January and February because they won’t exist. That is the message I’ve given our officials: Call it in November and we won’t have to worry about it because the penalty is too high." Collins also says some flagrant situation reviews take longer as key review angles aren't available yet to the referees, "So they may stand there for 30 or 40 seconds waiting on those feeds to come. That’s not the officials’ fault." (link)

(link); New Mexico Deputy AD for External Operations Hutchins on Friday night FB kicks, like this week's as the Lobos host Boise State, "It creates national exposure for our university and the conference, but that doesn’t translate into increased ticket sales and attendance. We survey our stakeholders every year and have measurable data on preferred game times, and that is not on a Friday or at 8 p.m." (link); Alabama FB HC Saban yesterday, "I don’t think anybody out there realizes the difficulties we have in scheduling, finding someone to play. It’s really, really tough." (link)
