Ways to Share and Give this Holiday Season
Warming Tree
November 7th through 28th
Thatcher Hall

What a marvelous ministry! Our annual Grace Warming Tree has been moved up a month so we can better serve our neighbors in need. Please bring donations of gently used and new hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, thermal underwear/long johns, socks, and blankets/throws. Your donated items will be shared with families via the Pigeon Center, the young via Mountain Projects and Head Start, and the old via the Senior Center. These items can be placed near the Clothes Tree in Thatcher Hall. All sizes, shapes, and colors will be distributed with delight!

Questions, pick-up arrangements, and/or donation receipts can be facilitated by Diane Collins (704-607-5992).
Call for Knitters and Crocheters to Make Hats, Gloves, and Mittens

The Marthas Knitting Guild invites you to make hats for Mountain Projects and Pathways families. We can provide yarn and needles or hooks for any who don’t have a stash. We hope to make or acquire warm things for 75 adults and children by the end of November. Please contact Emily Chatfield-Lusto or Paula Welling if you’d like to help.

Angel Christmas Tree
November 18th through December 12th
Thatcher Hall

‘Tis the season to be an angel to an angel! The Grace Church Angel Tree will be displayed in Thatcher Hall, adorned with beautiful gift tags. These wishes come directly from the homeless children and youth of Tuscola High and Waynesville Middle Schools. They vary in cost, so please feel free to take one or more gift tags. The gifts do not need to be wrapped, but please attach the gift tag to the purchased items. All gifts must be placed under the Angel Tree by December 12th.

If you’d rather donate to help in the gift-giving effort, please make out a check to Grace Church and note “Angel Tree” in the memo area. Thank you for your thoughtfulness in helping to bring Christmas joy to a homeless child!

If you have any questions, please contact Laurel Destry (
email or 828-558-7818) or Maureen Hunt (678-491-7952).
Preparing for the ECW Cookie Sale
Monday & Tuesday, November 10th & 11th, from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm
Grace Church Kitchen

Please see the Grace Church Cookie Sale sign-up board in Thatcher Hall to indicate if you would like to make cookies in the Grace Church kitchen in preparation for the upcoming Cookie Sale. There also is a sign-up sheet for you to indicate how many and what kind(s) of cookies you will be making, regardless of whether you come and use the kitchen. Our goal is to make 150 dozen cookies to make enough money to gift Haywood Pathways with $1,000.00 for the Women and Children’s Center.

If you should have questions about making your cookies at the church, contact Carol Lans (828-926-8062). For other questions about the cookie sale, contact Laurel Destry (828-558-7818). Thanks for your help with this ECW project!

And mark your calendar for the sale—Saturday, December 15th from 9:00 am to noon.
Grace in the World
"God at Ingles"
-- a spiritual reflection by parishioner & author Mary Lockey --

I think I talked with God.

When I was walking towards Ingle's this old woman - probably 80's - with absence of teeth and sparkly eyes - said, "Honey I should have worn my big coat like you!"  I said, "It has turned cold, hasn't it?"  She said "Yes! It might snow tonight!'"  I told her I hoped it wouldn't.  She said, "I pray every night that it won't and it doesn't!  I have always loved you."  Then she hugged me and blessed me. I told her she was sweet.

Then she said "I love everybody" but I felt no less special.  She said that not everyone loves enough these days to which I replied, "It's the truth. The world needs more people like you."  I asked if she needed help getting her groceries to her car.  She said she had to park across the lot because she couldn't get close, but "thank you I can get them."  So we said goodbye, then she greeted another man with "hey honey" and began to push her cart across the lot.  I watched her walk away. I watched until I could no longer see the scarf that protected her head from the wind.

I want to believe that there was no car.  I want to believe that she only told me she couldn't find a close space near the store entrance because she knew I might try to help her load her groceries into her car.  And well, God doesn't drive.  It would blow her cover.  I think she walked away from me towards the corner of the lot, and when I averted my eyes for just a minute, she ascended into heaven, groceries and all.

"I have always loved you."

Canticle to the Holy Face
St. Therese of Lisieux
August 12th, 1895

Image from the Icons in Transformation exhbit by Ludmila Pawlowska, coming to Grace in April 2019

Dear Jesus! Thy dear and holy Face
Is the bright star that guides my way;
Thy gentle glance, so full of grace,
Is my true heaven on earth, today.
My love finds out the holy charm
Of Thy dear eyes with tear-drops wet;
Through mine own tears I smile at Thee,
And in Thy griefs my pains forget.

Oh! I would gladly live unknown,
Thus to console Thy aching heart.
Thy veiled beauty, it is shown
To those who live from earth apart.
Fain would I fly to Thee alone!

Thy Face it is my fatherland;
It is the sunshine of my days;
My realm of love, my sunlit land,
Where through the hours I sing Thy praise;
It is the lily of the vale,
Whose mystic perfume, freely given,
Brings comfort, when I faint and fail,
And makes me taste the peace of heaven.

Thy face, in its unearthly grace,
Is like the divinest myrrh to me,
That on my heart I gladly place;
It is my lyre of melody;
My rest—my comfort—is Thy Face.
My only wealth, Lord! is thy Face;
Naught ask I more than this from Thee;
Hidden in the secret of Thy Face,
The more I shall resemble Thee!
Leave on me the divine impress
Of Thy sweet, patient Face of love,
And soon I shall become a saint,
And draw men's hearts to Thee above.

So, in the secret of Thy Face,
Oh! hide me, hide me, Jesus blest!
There let me find its hidden grace,
Its holy fires, and, in heaven's rest,
Its rapturous kiss, in Thy embrace!
