Un franc succès pour la Journée Internationale de la paix (JIP) 2018 !
International Day of Peace (IDP) 2018 - a resounding success!
Cette année, la programmation entourant la Journée Internationale de la paix (JIP) du 21 septembre s’est produit du 5 septembre au 12 octobre. Ce sont 60 activités de réflexion et d’action pour la paix qui ont eu lieu à Montréal et ce, grâce à la participation de 70 partenaires de réalisation et avec l’appui de 20 partenaires financiers, en plus des membres du Réseau pour la paix et l’harmonie sociale. Nous souhaitons accorder une mention spéciale à Fiera Capital et à la Dym Family Foundation pour leur soutien financier. Nous tenons également à remercier chaleureusement chaque acteur et actrice de paix qui a pu collaborer, soutenir et participer d’une façon ou d’une autre au succès de la JIP 2018. Année après année, nous désirons mettre en lumière cette journée qui permet de valoriser les artisan.e.s de paix de notre métropole et leurs initiatives. Même après les célébrations, nous vous invitons à poursuivre la réflexion sur cet enjeu qui nous concerne toutes et tous et de continuer à œuvrer pour la paix par l’entremise d’actions au quotidien. Ces actes de paix peuvent être simples tels que d’accueillir et de valoriser la différence autour de nous, de réaliser des gestes solidaires, d’être à l’écoute et attentif.ve aux gens qui nous entourent, etc. Continuons sans relâche de prendre part à « La paix en action » !
 
This year’s programming for Montreal’s celebrations of the International Day of Peace (IDP), as coordinated by the Peace Network for Social Harmony, took place over more than a month’s time, from September 5 to October 12.  Some 60 activities involving 70 partners on the ground took place under the IDP Montreal 2018 banner, with an additional 20 partners providing financial support. This is on top of the support provided for our operations by the Peace Network’s 21 fabulous members. We'd like to express our heartfelt appreciation to IDP Montreal 2018 Lead Partners, the Dym Family Foundation and Fiera Capital. We'd also like to give a warm and sincere “thank you” to each and every partner who collaborated to make IDP 2018 such a resounding success.  Each year, we strive to use this platform to shine an ever-greater spotlight on our city’s peace builders and their invaluable activities. Even though IDP celebrations are complete, we encourage you to continue to reflect on the importance of peace and social harmony in our communities, and to contribute to it within our daily lives.  This can include simple gestures of solidarity, of connection, and of listening to those with whom you live, work and play, as well as those you happen to encounter.  Let’s work together year-round for Peace-in-Action!

Événements commémoratifs 
Commemorations
La commémoration de la Journée internationale de la paix s’est déroulée à l’hôtel de ville de Montréal où quatre jeunes adultes ont témoigné, de façon très inspirante, de leur implication citoyenne et de la construction de la paix sociale au quotidien. Ces jeunes exemplaires, acteurs et actrices de changements, provenaient des organismes Love -Québec, Ensemble pour le respect de la diversité, Amnistie Internationale Canada Francophone et de l’école Vanguard. Durant ce rassemblement, la chanteuse populaire Mamselle Ruiz a offert une prestation musicale pour la paix et l’espoir d’un monde meilleur pour nos générations futures. Lors de cette même matinée, le Dawson Peace Center réalisait une cérémonie où deux arbres significatifs ont été plantés, dont un provenant des semences d'un arbre ayant survécu aux bombardements d'Hiroshima. Celui-ci a été planté afin de souligner la paix et l'autre, un pin blanc, pour symboliser leur engagement et leur détermination pour l’intégration de la culture et de l’histoire autochtone du Canada au sein de leur établissement. Un dernier événement commémoratif figurait à la programmation, soit le souper-gala des Médailles de la paix où plus de quatre cents convives se sont réunis pour rendre hommage à des citoyens et citoyennes qui contribuent à bâtir des communautés plus harmonieuses. Les bénéfices obtenus lors de cette soirée ont été  dirigés aux programmes Zones Jeunesse du YMCA qui permet aux jeunes de divers milieux d’avoir des conditions de vie paisibles et favorables à leur succès.

The central commemoration of the International Day of Peace took place at Montreal’s City Hall, with 4 youth speaking inspiringly about their active social engagement and their commitment to a peaceful society.  These impressive young men and women came for LOVE Quebec, Ensemble for the Respect of Diversity, Amnesty International Canada, and the Vanguard School.  The City Hall activity also included Latina singer Mamselle Ruiz, who sang songs of peace and of hope for a better world for future generations. Other commemorative events included the planting of two trees by the Dawson Peace Centre.  The trees were significant in that one came from seeds that survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, and the other was a white pine, planted in recognition of indigenous history and culture and its ongoing presence at Dawson College.  The YMCA Peace Medal gala dinner also took place under the IDP banner, with more than 400 people gathering to honour organizations and individuals who contribute to peace and social harmony in their communities.  The event’s revenues went to the YMCA’s Youth Zones program, which helps young people from a diversity of backgrounds to live peaceful and successful lives.

Workshops and public lectures
Du 13 au 21 septembre, le Dawson Peace Center organisait sa propre semaine pour la paix en offrant, autant aux élèves qu’à la population, des ateliers de yoga et de méditation, des conférences pertinentes portant sur des thématiques d’actualité, en plus de donner la possibilité aux gens de venir contribuer à leurs jardins communautaires. Impact Hub Montréal en collaboration avec Pésence-Qi, ont également proposé un cours atelier de méditation pour l’impact social et la paix en utilisant un espace vert public pour accueillir les personnes intéressées à prendre part au mouvement. Des ateliers où l’usage de l’art comme outil de médiation ont eu lieu au cours du mois. Ceux-ci avaient comme thèmes principaux les valeurs individuelles et culturelles, pour un mieux vivre-ensemble et la guérison des mémoires. Enfin, des discussions portant sur des thématiques telles que le génocide des populations yézidies en Iraq, l’engagement de la jeunesse pour la paix, les rapports de force et les préjugés, ainsi que la signification et la pratique de la paix ont pris forme durant les mois de septembre et octobre.

From September 13 to 21, the Dawson Peace Centre organized a slate of Peace Week activities, offering the student body as well as the general public yoga and meditation sessions, public lectures on significant peace-related themes, as well as opportunities to contribute to the institution’s community gardens. Impact Hub, in partnership with Présence-Qi, also offered a meditation session for social impact and peace, with the goal of engaging people into the movement through a mindful activity offered at a serene public green space.  Several workshops using art as a tool for peace also took place over the course of the month; these centered on the connection from personal and cultural values to social harmony and healing.  And finally, public lectures took place on themes such as the genocide of Yazidi populations in Iraq, the mobilizing of youth for peace, power imbalances and discrimination, and the importance and nature of peace work.
 
Dialogues interreligieux et interculturels
Interfaith and inter-cultural dialogue 
Cette année, ce sont quatre activités où le dialogue interreligieux et interculturel fut au cœur des rencontres par l’entremise de parcours remarquables. Le 21 septembre a marqué le coup d’envoi d’un premier parcours interculturel et interreligieux qui s’est déroulé dans le quartier Villeray. Les gens se sont retrouvés au Centre de méditation Nalandabodhi pour ensuite se diriger vers l’Église orthodoxe antiochoise St. George. Après la visite de ces lieux de culte, un café-rencontre a permis de discuter plus intimement pour obtenir les impressions des participant.e.s et en savoir davantage sur leurs apprentissages, en plus de partager certaines réflexions à l’égard du vivre-ensemble. La deuxième activité proposée fut un parcours oecuménique à Ahuntsic où des églises orthodoxe, catholique, pentecôtiste et melkite ont ouvert leurs portes à une quinzaine de citoyens et citoyennes disposé.e.s à s’imprégner de chacun des lieux et à demeurer à l’écoute des témoignages des différents prêtres. Le partage d’un repas et les échanges entre toutes et tous ont permis d’aborder la paix sous différents angles. Par la suite, c’est le circuit d’exploration urbaine et le partage de récits de vie qui furent proposés par le Centre justice et foi et Montréal Explorations, afin de découvrir la diversité musulmane montréalaise : une activité incontournable qui, d’ailleurs, se répètera au printemps 2019. La découverte de lieux de cultes de l’arrondissement Côte-des-Neiges s’est avérée être le dernier parcours inscrit dans la programmation de la JIP 2018. Celui-ci a débuté à l’église Saint-Pascal-Baylon et s’est terminé à la Mosquée Taiba où une discussion a été entamée pour permettre d’élaborer autour du thème de la paix entre les différentes confessions.

This year, IDP Montreal included four remarkable activities centered on interfaith and inter-cultural dialogue.  On September 21st – Peace Day itself – the first of these took place in the form of an interfaith walk in Montreal’s Villeray neighbourhood.  Participants began their day at the Nalandabodhi Meditation Centre, from which they headed to St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church.  The activity finished with a debrief at a local café, at which participants shared impressions of what they saw and experienced at the religious institutions they had visited, as well as their thoughts on vivre-ensemble.  The second such activity was an ecumenical walk that took place in Ahuntsic, during which Orthodox, Catholic, Pentecostal and Melkite churches were visited by a group of 15 citizens interested in better understanding and learning from these religious institutions.  A shared meal allowed for discussions on what was experienced over the course of the walk.  Next was an urban exploration tour of the diversity of Montreal’s Muslim institutions, organized by Centre justice et foi and Montréal Explorations.  This very successful activity, which led to deep reflection and insights among participants, will be repeated in the Spring of 2019.  And finally, an interfaith walk took place in Côte-des-Neiges, which visited the Saint-Pascal-Baylon Church and the Taiba Mosque, with plenty of discussion on each religious institution’s traditions and their roles and approaches to generating peace.

Que ce soit lors d’un 5 à 7 pour célébrer 25 ans de prévention et d’intervention contre la violence, au cours d’un rallye pour promouvoir des comportements de paix ou lors d’une soirée dansante pour cultiver la paix en nous et autour de nous, en plus de tisser des liens, les activités festives et d’implication citoyenne ont réuni des centaines de personnes. À l’église Saint-Édouard, grâce à une initiative de la pastorale sociale Petite-Patrie, diverses activités ont été offertes aux citoyen.ne.s en lien avec le photoreportage : « QuébécoisEs, musulmanEs…et après ? ». D’autres événements ont également enrichi cette catégorie de la programmation de la JIP, soient un pique-nique pour permettre la rencontre entre nouveaux-arrivants, un concert-témoignage favorisant une meilleure compréhension entre les peuples, des actions citoyennes pour la paix, de jeunes artistes engagés se réunissant pour la création d’une œuvre sociale, ainsi que de jeunes leaders en action pour favoriser des rencontres interculturelles dans leur quartier.

From a 5-à-7 to celebrate LOVE’s 25 years of violence prevention, to a public rally encouraging peaceful behaviours, to an evening of dancing for inner and interpersonal peace, festive and public outreach activities touched hundreds of Montrealers.  At the Saint-Édouard Church, as organized by Pastorale sociale Petite-Patrie, a variety of public activities were offered in relation to the "Québécois and Muslim... What Does the Future Hold ?” photojournalism exhibition.  Other activities in this category of IDP programming included a Welcome Picnic for newly-arrived Montrealers, a piano recital/testimonial for greater understanding among people of different backgrounds, an event based in citizen actions for peace, young artists jointly creating a peace-related work of art, and an event mobilizing young leaders to work on intercultural encounters in their neighbourhoods.

Par l’entremise des réseaux sociaux, au sein des écoles secondaires montréalaises ou au cours d’une rencontre officielle, les campagnes de sensibilisation ont marqué la JIP 2018 avec des sujets d’actualité qui nous concernent tous et toutes. La prévention des agressions sexuelles et de la haine, la promotion d’outils de paix, la remise du Prix du public pour la paix et le lancement du coffret Manifeste pour la paix reflètent les actions qui ont été entamées pour sensibiliser un public de tout âge.

Using social media as their central tool and focused on key peace-related themes, various awareness-raising campaigns took place under the IDP Montreal 2018 banner.  These efforts, geared to wide-ranging audiences from high school students to the general public to established community leaders, touched on subjects such as the prevention of sexual violence and of hate, the promotion of effective tools for generating peace, the awarding of a Public Peace Prize to encourage such work, and the launch of a Peace Manifesto to call for a society-wide movement towards a culture of peace.  Together, these activities made a strong statement on the important role each of us can play in creating communities of peace and social harmony.
 
Expositions, théâtre et projections
The arts: Photography, theatrical productions, and film screenings

Une dizaine d’activités ont été répertoriées dans cette catégorie où l’art s’est avéré un excellent outil de médiation pour promouvoir la paix et l’interculturalité. Plusieurs de celles-ci se sont réalisées au Musée des Beaux-arts de Montréal sous la forme d’expositions, de parcours et de rencontre pour la paix. Une exposition de photos portant sur des objets gardés précieusement par des immigrant.e.s québécois.e.s d’origines diverses a également vu le jour dans le cadre du 10e anniversaire de LatinArte, un organisme faisant la promotion d’artistes de l’Amérique latine demeurant au Québec. Deux pièces de théâtre ont également été proposées. Une d’entre elles se rapportait à l’histoire d’une famille musulmane pakistanaise et l’autre traitait du sujet de la radicalisation chez les jeunes adultes. En primeur cette année, le Réseau pour la paix et l’harmonie sociale s’est associé au Festival du Nouveau Cinéma pour promouvoir la section Panorama international. Ces films de qualité, qui abordent les enjeux de notre monde actuel, ont été présentés dans différentes salles de cinéma à Montréal. En dernier lieu, l’événement de clôture s’est produit au cinéma du Musée des Beaux-arts de Montréal et a donné lieu à la remise du prix du film pour la paix, ainsi qu’à la projection du film Tel Aviv on Fire, une œuvre cinématographique co-écrite par deux scénaristes venant d’Israël et de Palestine. Après le visionnement, une discussion s’est entamée avec ces deux invités spéciaux pour ensuite faire place à un cocktail, qui a permis aux invité.e.s de poursuivre la discussion.

A dozen activities took place in this category, reflecting the important role that the arts can play in generating a non-violent and inclusive society.  Several of these were undertaken by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in the form of exhibitions, walks, and encounters.  In addition, a photo exhibit on the precious objects brought over by Quebec’s immigrant populations was part of LatinArte’s 10th anniversary celebrations. The organization supports Latin American-born artists who now call Quebec home.  Two theatre pieces were also part of IDP Montreal 2018, one of which was presented by the Silk Road Institute and examined the potential for radicalization among young people within a family of Pakistani-Muslim origin.  New this year was a partnership between the Peace Network for Social Harmony and the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, involving the promotion of the festival’s Panorama section, which presents impressive films that open the audience’s eyes to the greater world around them.  These screenings took place in venues across the city.  And finally, IDP Montreal 2018 closed with an event that took place at the cinema of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and was organized by the Peace Network in collaboration with the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma.  The event included the awarding of the film festival’s Peace Prize, and the presentation of the film “Tel Aviv on Fire,” a unique comedy co-written by an Israeli-Palestinian screenwriting team.  After the screening, a discussion took place with the screenwriters, who were specially invited to the event, followed by a cocktail allowing the audience of over 160 people to continue reflecting on this thought-provoking experience.

Grâce à chacune des catégories de la JIP 2018 énumérées ci-dessus, nous pouvons percevoir à quel point la programmation de cette année fut si riche, diversifiée et invitante ! Avec des partenaires de réalisation hors pair et des partenaires financiers solidaires et engagés, nous avons eu l’occasion de vivre la paix sous plusieurs formes, accompagné.e.s d’acteurs et d’actrices inspirant.e.s et pour qui la paix en action est à maintenir chaque jour de l’année. Nous espérons retrouver tous ces acteurs et actrices de paix pour la JIP 2019, afin de poursuivre ces collaborations si précieuses et bénéfiques pour les citoyen.ne.s montréalais.es. Nous tenons également à vous annoncer que le 10e anniversaire du Réseau pour la paix se célèbrera en 2019. Looking at each category of activities for the International Day of Peace Montreal 2018, we can see the richness and the diversity of its very compelling programming – without doubt, the best such programming to date!  With the invaluable assistance of collaborators on the ground for each activity and of dedicated financial partners who make the undertaking financially viable, we were able to feature many forms of peacebuilding as undertaken by committed and inspiring individuals and organizations who work tirelessly for peace in our society.  We look forward to collaborating again with these dozens of partners next year on IDP Montreal 2019, as we shine an ever-increasing spotlight on the peace initiatives that are so beneficial to our quality of life.  At the same time, we’d like you to know that 2019 will be the Peace Network’s 10th anniversary!  We look forward to celebrating this milestone with you, with special activities to underscore the Network’s ongoing efforts to support and empower those who work to make our society a model of peace and social harmony. *To see the full list of activities that made up IDP Montreal 2018, please visit our web page.
