We won't take up too much of your time, but we really wanted to share how Google is trying to help you spot sketchy looking, mobile sign-up forms. We also have a few pressing questions that you should ask yourself about your website. And lastly, we have some totally non-internet based, fun things to do in our beautiful city as the skies darken and the moist air tries to dampen our 'spirits'.

Don't get nailed by surprise website mobile charges.

Starting in December, with the release of Chrome version 71 (that's a bit silly to say out loud), the browser will start warning you if you are about to land on a sketchy mobile subscription form. These forms have been tricking people into 'agreeing' to nasty, surprise service fees and other cringe-worthy policy agreements with regards to how they will use your personal data. Google had enough of this and is doing something about it.

Did you know?

In 2018, 52% of all global web traffic was from people using their phones.
As you can see, that's over half of all traffic globally which includes desktop AND tablet traffic. So you can confidently tell yourself that a large percentage of your own website traffic is from phones. Did we set up Google Analytics for you? If so, jump in and click on Audience > Mobile > Overview. What's the percentage beside 'mobile'?

Do you know what your own site looks like?
When was the last time you looked at your website using your phone? It's probably been a while, hey?

Do it now!

Was your site communicating your main business message clearly with something obvious to do, like a 'learn more' link, or some other touch point (without scrolling!)?

It's safe to say that at a minimum, you should be seeing at least 25% of your website traffic from mobile phones. So, unless you've worked hard to present the website in a really meaningful way to small screens, you could be leaking valuable leads.

Use this handy tool from Google that will test your website for mobile friendliness: https://search.google.com/test/mobile-friendly. Did you pass? Fail? This tool is pretty cool with a bunch more numbers and charts: https://ready.mobi/. It takes a while to process, but it's worth it.

The Victoria Caledonian Distillery

Consider warming your palate with a visit to Victoria's own Caledonian Distillery. This place is a truly world class distillery steeped in tradition, brewing very high-quality single-malt whiskies. They are lead by a 3rd generation master distiller with an 18 year pedigree serving at Lagavulin, Speyside and Glenkinchie. It's worth a tour if that's your sort of thing.

The Ogden Point Breakwater

This might seem like an obvious spot for some, but this town favorite has had a major facelift recently, including a rather tastefully applied guardrail spanning the entire walkway. Grab your favorite winter jacket and gloves and take a stroll at sunset along this spectacular (and much safer) path that darts 800 metres (one way!) out into the Salish Sea. Admire the First Nations artwork and circle the working lighthouse. It's not uncommon to see sea lions, seals and possibly even a pod of orca whales during your visit. It's extremely picturesque, you just might need a hot drink to sip along the way.
