APPOINTMENTS

Jane Stirling and Nicolle Wahl
Jane Stirling has been appointed executive director, communications in UTM’s Office of Communications. Previously, Stirling was UTM’s director of marketing and communications. She also served as acting director of public affairs, associate director of news services and editor of The Bulletin on the downtown St. George campus.
 
Nicolle Wahl has been appointed director, content in UTM’s Office of Communications. Previously, Wahl served as assistant director, communications (digital) and manager, communications and marketing at UTM, and news services officer on the downtown St. George campus.

EXTRA CREDIT

Congratulations to the winners of ‘The Octagon Health Data Science Competition.’ The inaugural two-day event saw 19 post-secondary teams compete to analyze biotechnology data from an ongoing study. The winning team, from U of T’s Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, nabbed bragging rights and a $5,000 prize. Hosted by UTM, the competition highlights the new Digital Health Technologies concentration of the Masters of Biotechnology program which focuses on machine learning, business, health, regulation and data science.

IN MEMORIUM

Department of Visual Studies professor emerita Luba Eleen has died. She was a founding member of the department when she joined Erindale College in 1972, launching the Art and Art History program, the first collaborative program offered by U of T and Sheridan College. Eleen was an influential and highly respected scholar of medieval manuscripts and Italian painting, and was instrumental in changing the university’s salary structure to include equal pay for women in the academy. Eleen retired in 1994, but remained active in the UTM community.

HONOURS & AWARDS

Lucy Gaspini, director, academic success & integrity with the Office of the Vice-Principal Academic and Dean, is celebrating four decades of working at U of T. Gaspini was recently recognized for her service at a reception for long-term employees of the university hosted by U of T President Meric Gertler and Professor Kelly Hannah-Moffat, vice-president of human resources. Gaspini reflects on her career in a special interview with The Bulletin.
Associate Professor Marc Johnson
Associate professor of biology Marc Johnson is among 21 U of T researchers awarded Canada Research Chairs. Professor Patrick Gunning of the Department of Chemical & Physical Sciences was renewed as a research chair in medicinal chemistry, and Associate Professor Elizabeth Johnson of the Department of Psychology was renewed in spoken language acquisition.
Associate Professor Fiona Rawle and Assistant Professor Jayne Baker
Fiona Rawle, associate professor of biology, teaching stream and associate dean, undergraduate, has been recognized with a teaching award from the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations. Rawle was recognized at an October ceremony for her passion and dedication as a teacher as well as her commitment to active learning.

Jayne Baker has been recognized with U of T's Early Career Teaching Award which celebrates faculty members in the early stages of their careers who go above the call of duty to help their students learn. Baker is an assistant professor, teaching stream with the Department of Sociology. Her research focuses on how to maximize student learning and engagement, particularly in sociology.
