High School - Science, Alumni Spotlight:
2019 Santa Barbara County Teacher of the Year
Meet Mandi!
Mandi de Witte is the reigning Teacher of the Year for Santa Barbara County, and guess what? She attended our program!
We had the opportunity to interview Mandi about her experiences at UC Santa Barbara, as well as her perspective as a true teacher leader in the field. What stood out to us was her motivation to
connect with students in meaningful ways, passion to teach science for its ability to develop inquisitive students and its potential to solve complex world problems, authenticity in prioritizing self-care, and advocacy for manageable class sizes in order to effectively educate and relate with students.
"Growing up, the teachers who stood out to me made me feel important in their class. When students feel safe and connected, the learning can follow that much easier. Yes, we are teachers of our subjects, but above all, we are teachers of young people, and their needs come first."
And, see Mandi in conversation with County Supervisor of Schools, Dr. Susan Salcido, in a segment called Talking with Teachers here.

Elementary School, Alumni Spotlight:
First Principal to K-8 STEAM Academy, Rio Del Sol
Meet Ralph!
Not only did Dr. Ralph Córdova receive his teaching credential at UCSB, but he also went on to earn his Ph.D. from the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education in 2004. His strong career as a bilingual elementary teacher led to his founding of the Cultural Landscape Collaboratory
and ResponsiveDesign, both pioneering endeavors for approaching the landscape of education with inquiry and collaboration at its heart. His prior work was as a tenured professor at University of Missouri, St. Louis where he centered student learning experiences around their question, What problem do I want to solve?
We interviewed Ralph on his newest endeavor as the very first Principal to the transdisciplinary K-8 STEAM Academy, Rio Del Sol in Oxnard, CA, which leverages innovation, creativity, design, and collaborative, ongoing discovery processes.
"As educators, we educate all children, but we are also preparing them for future careers that don’t yet exist. We need to seriously ask ourselves: 'What do we believe is most important for our society? Whose voices aren’t heard?'"

Meet Kyle!
An educator by day and entrepreneur at heart, Kyle Rehder graduated from TEP in 2017 and works now with Junior High teens who have severe disabilities. Upon finishing his first official year as a teacher in the classroom, he reflected, "It has been hands-down the most professionally gratifying year of my life and I know I have finally found my true calling!"
Kyle is an action-oriented, problem solver as demonstrated in his creative solution to raise money for classroom materials and his student's travel to the Special Olympics: an innovative t-shirt enterprise. His passions for working with autistic children and serving the state of California, combined with the need to give his students an experience of belonging, accomplishment, and striving for something larger than themselves, led to the awesome design Kyle models above.

You can support the opportunities he gives his students by emailing Kyle to let him know you'd like to purchase one!
