Joze Piranian Inspires Brain Power's Public Speaking Students!
We were excited to welcome Joze Piranian (pictured left) to our Public Speaking class on November 12th!
Joze is a lifelong stutterer on the quest to confront his fears one stage a time. After spending most of his life avoiding speaking out of the fear of being judged for being "different," he is now a TEDx speaker, inspirational speaker of the year at Speaker Slam in 2017, and a stand-up comedian who has performed at the laugh Factory (Chicago), the Broadway Comedy Club (NY), Comedy Nest (Montreal), and Absolute Comedy (Toronto). His mission is to share his tale of overcoming adversity in order to motivate others to face their biggest fears, overcome their obstacles, and fulfill their potential.
In September 2018, Joze gave a talk at the Archangel Summit in front of 2500 people, sharing the stage with Arlene Dickinson, JP Sears, Brendon Bouchard and Dandapani.
Here are some of our successful Entrance Exam Preparation students from 2017-18! We trained them for various gifted school entrance exams – IB, SSAT, MACS, TOPS, UTS — and all were accepted!
UTS Preparation - Stage 2 - Registration is on!
Our class begins in early January for students in Grades 6 and 8 who are applying to UTS (or other schools that require interviews).
During our training sessions, we address ALL aspects of the Stage 2 interviews. We have mock interviews, practice drills and provide feedback, have UTS alumni and past exam proctors as guests, share helpful tips, and discuss intense improvement plans tailored specifically and individually for your child. Parents are invited to attend along with their child(ren).

Thoughts on Brain Power: It was an amazing program! I studied with multiple teachers there, and they were all eager to help. Nanci has over 15 years of experience as a Psychoeducational Consultant in the public school board. In this setting, she provides consultation and comprehensive assessment of children/adolescents with diverse needs (e.g. intellectual, academic, social, emotional, behavioural).
Nanci completed her Masters in Counselling Psychology at the Adler School of Professional Psychology. She is registered in the area of school psychology with the College of Psychologists of Ontario.

Listening to young people about issues that matter to them is an important commitment of the government. As Minister of Youth, the Prime Minister wants to hear directly from young people. The Prime Minister’s Youth Council is one mechanism to support this dialogue."
"Youth Council members meet both online and in person several times a year to discuss issues that matter to their peers, their community, and their country. They interact with each other outside of meetings to discuss ideas and upcoming activities, and to talk with their peers about issues that matter most to them. There may also be opportunities to engage with local and national organizations, meet with policy makers and decision-makers like Cabinet Ministers, and attend public events."

A Recipe for Academic Growth
We believe in encouraging children to develop a “growth mindset” that views challenges as “energizing rather than intimidating” because “they offer opportunities to learn” (Dweck 2015).
This requires that students are challenged, and that means getting stuck on certain questions, getting certain questions incorrect, and returning to rethink certain questions more than once.
This is why we deliberately split our homework questions between those that:
Give students an opportunity to reiterate and reinforce skills and techniques that they have learned (or seen demonstrated) in the classroom.
Challenge students to use their creative thinking to tackle problems that go a bit beyond what they have learned (or seen demonstrated) in the classroom.
If students get a homework question incorrect, they should reattempt (but not resubmit) it before the next class. (Parents should not feel obligated to “step in” to explain the problem to their child.)
In the next class, the instructor will review all of the homework questions, taking extra time to explain those that students found particularly challenging.
Not only does this approach encourage children’s academic growth, but it also bolsters their self-reliance, resilience, creativity, and flexibility in the face of intellectual challenges.
