November 2018

Hello fellow adventurers!

November is a season for giving thanks and I am thankful for all of the children who have gone outside with me and for our friends who have supported their park trips! Check out just a few of my adventures below and please join me and #OptOutside on Friday, November 23.

Speaking of Thanksgiving, I’m so thankful for students at the Bullis School (MD) who enter our  Kids to Parks Day School Contest each year to help an under-served class in a nearby community. Because of the Bullis students, 50 children went on a free park field trip to celebrate Kids to Parks Day last May! Read more from their inspirational teacher Carolyn Cohen.

What’s better than visiting one national park? Learning about four parks in a single day! Thanks to the National Park Foundation’s Open Outdoors for Kids funding we are hosting four park jamborees this school year. These events bring together many DC-area 4th graders with national parks across the capitol region so that they can learn about multiple parks at one time. If you live in the DC-area, find out about our first two jamborees and how you can participate in others planned for spring 2019!

But that's not all! Our Buddy Bison Schools have also participated in the first Science Fest at First State National Historical Park (DE) where they studied the diverse ecosystem of the Beaver Valley. Then at the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary (MN) Buddy Bison students learned about pollinators and the legacy of Congressman Bruce Vento, a park champion and former school teacher.

Buddy Bison Student Ambassador Sarah Hullihen (NJ) certainly had a spook-tacular Halloween! Sarah joined fellow Student Ambassador Audrey Elliott (NC) and NPT staff at the White House Halloween event as guests of the National Park Service. Sarah and Audrey greeted families while they trick-or-treated and talked about their favorite national parks.
