Christmas Cantata

Sunday, December 16

As we prepare for Advent, please note that the Christmas Cantata will be presented on Sunday, December 16 during the 9:30 AM Worship Service.  Rehearsals are on Sundays from 10:45-11:45 AM, following Worship and Fellowship Time.

Music scores are available on request for anybody interested, along with many spoken scripture reading parts.  Please see Grayce for more information and to obtain hardcopy.

Children are invited to participate in the cantata by singing the first verse of UMH 217,  "Away in a Manger".  Please contact Grayce Armstrong and/or Pastor Denise to schedule children’s practice.

Wednesday Bible Study
11:30 AM

The Wednesday Bible Study meets from 11:30 AM until 1:00 PM.  There is an optional prayer time in the sanctuary at 11:15 AM, prior to the bible study.  Pastor Denise is currently leading the Alpha Bible Study, with two sessions remaining.  They will be held on December 5 and 12.  A new topic of study will be selected at the December 12 class.  The new study topic will begin after New Years; watch the church calendar for details. Everyone is welcome to attend.  If you are not already engaged in the Wednesday bible study, attending would make a wonderful New Year's resolution!

DeBows Pathfinders

The DeBows Pathfinders went hiking on Saturday, November 24, along the D&R Canal at Washington Crossing. The Pathfinders will be considering another hiking event sometime after New Year's.  Watch the church calendar for details.  You may contact Wayne Ervin for additional information.

Christmas Poinsettias
We are currently taking orders for poinsettias.  Order forms are available on the bulletin stand outside of the sanctuary.  You may place completed order forms in the collection plate or give them directly to Marilyn Allerton.  Each poinsettia is $4.00 and comes in a 6” pot. The poinsettias will be used to decorate the sanctuary starting on Sunday, December 16th. They may be taken home after the Christmas Eve Candlelight Service.  All orders must be submitted and paid for by Sunday, December 9th.
Charlie Zahm
Celtic Christmas Concert
On Saturday, December 8 at 1:30 PM, Charlie Zahm will once again perform in our area, presenting a Celtic Christmas Concert.  It will be held at the First Baptist Church of Allentown (72 Waker Avenue (Rte 526) Upper Freehold Twp).  Charlie is a accomplished baritone balladeer and will be joined by talented fiddle player, Tad Marks.  This is a FREE event and a wonderful way to celebrate the Christmas season.
Event Cancelation Alerts
As winter approaches and the possibility of snow and unsafe travel conditions increases, please remember that alerts will be posted on the church website and calendar for events impacted by bad weather.  A special email distribution will also be sent out to notify people of any event cancelations etc.
Lectionary News
Unless the Pastor selects scripture readings based on a specific theme or sermon series, we get our weekly scripture readings from the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL). The RCL works on a 3-year cycle and in each year the readings focus on one of the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, or Luke), with readings from the Gospel of John intermixed throughout the year. The Gospel of Matthew is the focus of Year A, Mark in Year B, and Luke in Year C.  The church liturgical year begins with Advent.  We will begin following Year C of the RCL on Sunday, December 2; the first Sunday of Advent.
2019 Estimated Giving Cards
If you have already completed a Estimated Giving Card for 2019, "Thank You". If you have not had an opportunity yet, you may do so anytime during Advent.  Envelopes containing the cards can be found on the communion rail at the front of the sanctuary.  You may place the completed card in the collection plate or give it directly to Sue Hayward.  Having a accurate estimate of giving helps the financial planning process of the church.  Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
Grocery Shopping Cards

Every week during Fellowship Time, you have the opportunity to purchase grocery store shopping cards for either Shoprite or Stop & Shop.  This is a convenient way to pay for the food you buy at the grocery store and at the same time support the ministries of DeBows UMC.  The church makes 5% of all shopping cards sold. You may see Sue Hayward or Marilyn Allerton to purchase the shopping cards on any Sunday.

Scrip Gift Cards
We raised $300 from the November bulk Scrip order.  Due to the improved delivery time of the ordered gift cards, it would be possible to place another bulk order on 12/9 or 12/16 if there is sufficient demand.  If you wish to order any last minutes gift cards for Christmas, please see Sue Hayward.

Gertrude Hawk Candy
We raised $330 from the November Gertrude Hawk Candy fundraiser. Thank You!

2nd & 4th Monday Each Month
The next Food Pantry distribution is Monday, December 10
The Food Pantry is open the 2nd & 4th Monday each month from 6:00-8:00pm.  If you would like to volunteer time to support this ministry, please see the sign-up sheet outside of Fellowship Hall.  You may contact Deb Cregle for more information.

Please note: due to the fact the fourth Monday of December is Christmas Eve, the Food Pantry will be open on Monday, December 10 & 17.  It will then be open again on Monday, January 14, on the normal schedule.
DeBows will once again participate in the Holiday Gift Drive in support of the Children’s Home Society of Trenton. A list of children, with ages and suggested gift items is available from Tom Hornak, who is coordinating this outreach activity. If you are participating, please place gifts in a shopping bag (unwrapped) and bring them to church by Sunday, December 9. They will be delivered to the Children’s Home Society during the following week. They may be the only gifts some of these children will receive this Christmas. This is one way we share the love of Christ during this very special time of year with those less fortunate than ourselves.

UMCOR Hygiene Kits
*** Thank You ***

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all who brought in items for the UMCOR Hygiene Kits.  We were able to put together, pack and get to a pick-up point, 30 kits.  That is absolutely GREAT !  We still have some odds and ends to make up partial kits which we will complete again in the Spring.  We are a small church, but we do many good things......   Thanks again !

Recyclable Greeting Cards for St. Jude’s
This mission supports St. Jude’s entrepreneurial teen-run job training program, which teaches teen’s critical employment skills so they are prepared to be productive, wage-earning citizens in the community when they leave St. Jude. Only the front of the card is used, so any donated cards must not have writing on the back of the front picture. Please note: they do not accept Hallmark, Disney or American Greeting Cards. Please keep this outreach activity in mind as you decide what to do with greeting cards you receive over the Christmas season. You may place any cards you have in the collection box outside of Fellowship Hall.
#GivingTuesday is nationally celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, and unlike the preceding consumer driven shopping events of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday focuses on giving back or supporting charitable causes. This spirit of generosity is often facilitated by online giving.

As we enter into the season of Advent, we invite you to help DeBows continue to be a beacon of God’s love in our community by supporting the ministries and programs of the church. An easy way to do this and participate in #GivingTuesday (or anytime during Advent) is by using our online giving option found on the church website at www.debowsumc.org.

Just click on the “Online Giving” button found in the church website footer. This will permit you to donate online using the church’s secure PayPal account and your credit card. You do not need to have a personal PayPal account to participate. As always, donations to the church are tax deductible and will be reflected in your year-end giving statement from DeBows UMC.

Please note, that while #GivingTuesday is an annual event, the online giving feature is available year-round on the church website.  If you are looking for an easy way to make your financial contributions or to otherwise stay connected while you are away on vacation, we invite you to take advantage of this functionality.  Thank you for your faithful support.
