GREEN SUPPORT

SOPEX VN and Saola Conservation

SOPEX VN, a coffee trading company, entered a partnership with WWF in 2017 focusing on wildlife protection. By donating a portion of the revenue from its internationally sold Saola River premium coffee sales, SOPEX VN’s donations contribute to the continuation of a long-term WWF Saola protection programme in Central Annamites.
The establishment and maintenance of the forest guard model, whose members are mostly from ethnic minority groups living around the buffer zone, has proved that biodiversity conservation is part of the local community.
WWF’s work with local government, partners and communities focuses on strengthening and establishing protected area. During the past six years, in over 58,000 patrols days, almost 1,450 illegal camps destroyed, and 116,000 snares and traps removed across Quang Nam and Thua Thien Hue Saola Reserves. Conserving and restoring forests protects unique species like the Saola while also supporting and enhancing the livelihoods of people whose existence relies on ecosystem services provided by the forest. Over the years, almost 3,600 households from 9 communes in Thua Thien Hue and 11 communes in Quang Nam have been engaged in conservation programs and in excess of 170,000 person days employment were created which helped communities generate income. This has measurably reduced the pressure on forest resources by providing sustainable alternatives to logging, poaching and other destructive activities while preserving the unique species diversity.

The WWF Living Planet Report 2018

Human activities such as food production and overexploitation are causing ecosystems and species to decline dramatically. The agricultural industry is responsible for almost three quarters of tropical deforestation. For instance, we have lost 129 million hectares of forest between 1990-2015 - an area the size of South Africa.

Agricultural production of sugarcane, soybean and palm oil, amongst other cash crops, has led to the clearing of 40 per cent of the world’s forested land.
What else is threatening our ever-giving planet? What state it is in? All that and more are now available in the WWF Living Planet Report 2018.
